I want to thank you for helping me learn the correct way to play as I have always played and written by feeling. Now as the pressure of possible touring approaches and I will be spending more time on the guitar then my main instrument the drums you are so amazingly helpful! Thank You! Sincerely, Holland Finch

Hey Jason: I started playing day now ying guitar at 4 years old i'm 67 now. but noticed that i was getting
pinch harmonics totally by accident way before i knew what it was.
or even heard of a pinch harmonic. and could never get it again then i saw you teaching
it. i now know exactly how to do it but the nerves in my hands won't allow me to do it
because i have irepairable nueropothy in my hands, total nerve damage. dropping my pick
most of the time it really sucks! I love the sound of pinch harmonics. So i keep practicing
every single day my thumb meat just won't let me hit the strings Maybe God one day
will heal me and can master it some day and be as good as you, Zack Wild, dime bag
and everybody else! pray for me. thanks. Rock On you thousands of guitarist.

Yeah, that makes sense. The pinch harmonic is like salt and pepper on your steak, it's not the whole meal, it's just there to add flavor. I used to play bass in a garage band way back in highschool, I'm 53 now and haven't touched a instrument since, but lately I've been thinking about taking up guitar as a hobby. I'm looking at buying a Jackson JS32 and a small practice amp as a Christmas present for myself. I was originally looking at the Traveler Vibrant 88 Deluxe, but now I'm thinking I should go with the Jackson because it's a full sized guitar, and would be better to learn on. I can always pick up the small Traveler guitar a few years down the road from now. Anyway, nice lesson, I'm kind of anxious to try it out. I'll subscribe for more, thanks. 🎸🎶🎵

Im going to have to come back to this after work and change up how I have been approaching these pinch harmonics. I am one of those people who only gets the 2 out of 10, and saying I get 2 is a bit generous. I can never get them to ring out even when I do "hit" one. Ill give this video a second run through and see if I cant improve over the next week or so. Thanks Jason!

Hi Jason, great video again. I personally never had any problems with pinch harmonics but I just thought I would mention exactly what is going on when we play pinch harmonics (any harmonic), as that we are making the sting vibrate from 2 places, 1 from the fretted note to the pick and from the pick to the bridge. This is why this can change on different guitars (possibly with different scale lengths) and we can use this to our advantage by finding the best frequency along the string. To me the best band to use harmonics to the max are Machine Head.

    • @jasonstallworth
      @jasonstallworth  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for that! There are also a couple of songs by Disturbed and Killswitch that will subtly use those.

Jason, man, I wish I had your channel around when I was 16. I remember hearing pinch harmonics (and realizing it wasn't just some obscure rack effect) for the first time when I became obsessed with BLS. I figured if I wanted to learn how to use a technique that I heard BLS integrate, who better to learn it from than the man himself, Zakk Wylde. Problem was, he was not, nor has ever had any interest in teaching guitar (evidenced by his old "How to Play" TH-cam video, which is still very funny to me), so "Well, you just touch the string lightly with your finger within a millisecond of picking. Just fuckin'... don't be dumb." I gave up after about 6 years of trying. Here you are with the most detailed explanation for playing, what is essentially, a modified 12th fret harmonic, but Metal. Your teaching style is incomparable. Thank you!

I love pinch but it's just the beginning of harmonics. Of course I can't do em but if you can learn it's a very beautiful effect

I wanna add, If you pinch one note, bend it, pinch again before relaxing the bend, you get that Via twin pinch that can be extended to 3, 4 and more on that one note. So relax, you don't need a Grizzly bear chest with Polar bear arms to get it done. I do it all the time and I'm only built like a mountain lion Not a bear like Jason.

@@jasonstallworth awesome I'll def check that!
Biggest thing for me rn is finding cool stuff to listen to haha
Love the classics Metallica, Maiden, Sabbath etc but don't know a lot else bc I stopped listening to a lot of that stuff when I was a kid in the 90s.
Dethklok got me back into listening and BabyMetal got me hooked on some tone searching in terms of higher gain. But there's so much that didn’t really do it for me between like 1990 and Dethklok (Pantera maybe the exception bc I did kinda like some of that). But trying to find maybe some more obscure stuff from that time would be key.....
Def open to suggestions if you've got some favorites I should check out for influence! Or hey maybe that's for another video.
      Anyways much thanks again!
      😉🤘

Jason I get what you talking about playing from one guitar or another, I just go a new schecter reaper and the satin finish feels much different from my Ibanez, Jackson or even my Gibson SG. Also harder to play any guitars with torn rotator cuff and arthritis on my left thumb. The crap we have to put up with age and abuse in the gym.

I’ve been playing for awhile and I pretty much have the “pinchies” down but sometimes I think I’m gonna have a nasty squeal and it just fails lol. Good advice. Nice amp I have the same exact one. It just slays! 🤘 One thing about placement of the picking hand, Gojira has a song called Magma where they are moving the picking hand up and down to play pinch harmonics; gives it a really cool effect.
