my friend you are not ready for the journey you have taken upon yourself. Get ready for three, yes three, of the most arguably talented musicians and virtuosos in their respective craft. Once you start your Rush journey there is no stopping. This train has no brakes.

RUSH is a virtuoso BAND all three masters of their craft who happen to fit perfectly together. They could literally do anything they wanted musically and for 41 years they did and there is no one happier about it than me. They are the soundtrack of my life!

Glad to know you can appreciate what is quite literally my all-time favorite album by my all-time favorite band.
Something that is missing when 2112 is viewed on youtube is the Prologue to certain sections of the song that help explain the story. The prologue is written on the album sleeve along with the lyrics so many of us old fans already know it. But many new fans, thanks to the digital age, may have never read them. I will share them here. They are also available on the Rush website.
    They are as follows;
    Prologue to the entire album:
“I lie awake, staring out at the bleakness of Megadon. City and sky become one, merging into a single plane, a vast sea of unbroken grey. The Twin Moons, just two pale orbs as they trace their way across the steely sky. I used to think I had a pretty good life here, just plugging into my machine for the day, then watching Templevision or reading a Temple Paper in the evening.
My friend Jon always said it was nicer here than under the atmospheric domes of the Outer Planets. We have had peace since 2062, when the surviving planets were banded together under the Red Star of the Solar Federation. The less fortunate gave us a few new moons.
I believed what I was told, I thought it was a good life, I thought I was happy. Then I found something that changed it all…”
    II. TEMPLES OF SYRINX
“…The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the Heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests…”
    III. DISCOVERY
“…Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful…”
“…I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, I produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can’t wait to tell the priests about it! …”
    IV. PRESENTATION
“…In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed throughout the silent Temple Hall…”
“…Instead of the grateful joy that I expected, they were words of quiet rejection! Instead of praise, sullen dismissal. I watched in shock and horror as Father Brown ground my precious instrument to splinters beneath his feet…”
    V. ORACLE: THE DREAM
“…I guess it was a dream, but even now it all seems so vivid to me. Clearly yet I see the beckoning hand of the oracle as he stood at the summit of the staircase…”
“…I see still the incredible beauty of the sculptured cities, and the pure spirit of man revealed in the lives and works of this world. I was overwhelmed by both wonder and understanding as I saw a completely different way to life, a way that had been crushed by the Federation long ago. I saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss of all these things…”
    VI. SOLILOQUY
“…I have not left this cave for days now, it has become my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no other place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last…”
Also interesting is the story of the inspiration for the album. After extremely low sales of their third album "Caress of Steel", the record label was about to drop them. They were told they would give them one more album, one more shot to produce some sales or they were out. They wanted them to do more "Radio friendly" songs instead of lengthy concept pieces. Neil, Geddy, and Alex decided if they were going to go out, they were going to go out doing what they loved, so they put radio-friendly songs on one side of the album and a 20 minute middle finger to the record industry on the other. It ended up having massive sales not because of the radio-friendly songs, but because of the 20 minutes of them doing what they love the most. After that, Rush was given the freedom to do what they want without the label's interference.

Dave Carey the incredible drummer of Tool has said on more than one occasion that Rush and Neil Peart specifically inspired him immensely. This is almost cliché to say as we Rush fans have heard it countless times but there is a saying that "Rush is your favourite bands favourite band". So true...

Oh man, what a song for your first Rush song! You opened the door to a 40 year-long catalog of musical and lyrical masterpieces. Three dudes put out all of this music and they pull it off live. To get a good look at their craftsmanship, I would say watch Xanadu live from the 1981 Exit Stage Left tour. The singer plays bass, synthesizers, synth pedals with his feel, and rhythm guitar at the end. The drummer is an entire percussion section with drums, chimes, bells, wood blocks, and a glockenspiel. The guitarist plays both 6 and 12 string guitars. Many more instruments than band members, lol. Enjoy the journey. Cheers!

Just 3 guy’s making all that music. Yes they were the grandfather’s of prog metal. Tool was influenced by them and had developed their own sound but this was the original way back in 1976. Others suggested reactions include, Spirit of Radio, La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, Limelight, Jacob’s Ladder, And Xanadu.

That was their real breakout piece. They had some success, but with 2112, they established themselves as masters of the craft. 2112 is an expertly-crafted piece of compositional storytelling that flows from beginning to end, following techniques used in classical music for centuries. From there on, if you choose to listen to more from throughout their career, you'll find 40 years of incredible music encompassing many different styles and moods.

This suite of songs is based off a book titled 'Anthem' by Ayn Rand, It's a quick read and is free (public domain) at this point (I think). A very interesting book that is a strange read because in the future you are not allowed to say 'I' or 'Me' as no one has any individual rights.

Great reaction vid. Glad you appreciate it. This was a turning point for rush where the record label was about to dump them and was pushing them to make something more commercial.. and instead they did a 20+ minute work that they wanted to make. And it worked out and after that it was .. ok you can record whatever you want.
Obviously this is a story.. kind of apocalyptic in the beginning.. generations later the priests rule. the guy finds the guitar.. you get the next part he brings it to them tehy tell him to go away. He has a dream about the elder race before the apocalytic era... he decides he doesnt want to live anymore without the musci he found... and then the elder race comes back to reclaim the civilization from the priests.

if you think about the story theres a kind of Christ like death and resurrection in there, its left really vague
      but everybody gets it somehow
there is something universal about the theme of death and resurrection
his "life blood spills over" but then BAM!!! THE FIGHTS ON!
its one of those things thats so deep in the human psyche i dont think ANYONE fully understands it
its just pops out of creative artists over and over again

Imagine a world, actually a galactic empire, of authoritarian rule so afraid of individual creativity that they are completely without art. That is 2112...or can it be? Groupthink has to go! If we didn't get the warning from Orwell, maybe this can make us realize what it could lead to. Peart's writings were genius.

No need to discover anything "new" or different from what we are being given by the "select few". the purpose of music is to unite people
    THATS ITS PURPOSE
    ALWAYS WAS
back in the old days the village had to move together in dance to fool the lion or the wolf into thinking it was one big animal
that became army's and war drums
    and music followed from there
THE PURPOSE OF MUSIC IS TO UNITE PEOPLE
    ALWAYS WAS
so when someone takes a knee during our anthem
they are stabbing us deep in the back, ALOT DEEPER THAN YOU THINK
see music is how we bond
what did you bond with YOUR friends over?
    it was your music
    it always is
what did you and your loved one fall in love together with?
with this channel you share music
this is THE BEST WAY FOR PEOPLE TO UNITE
TOO DIS THE MUSIC OF OTHERS IS THE BEST, THE VERY VERY BEST WAY TO DESTROY UNITY BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS
its ALOT MORE SERIOUS A THING THAN YOU THINK
    ITS LIFE AND DEATH SERIOUS
MUSIC IS NOT A GAME, ITS NOT FRIVOLOUS, ITS NOT JUST A PAST TIME
ITS HOW THE HUMAN RACE UNITES AND MOVES TOGETHER
    you have to understand that
    if you dont
you dont understand music AT ALL
MUSIC IS VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT
for the love of god take your role in this channel seriously
    it IS serious business

Definitely one of the best albums I saw this live Rochester New York 1977 but I can’t remember a thing I went with my friend someone shot a frisbee at us out of nowhere and we went to shoot the frisbee back and we looked under it and had some acid on it so he dropped it it was phenomenal you do the best reactions of anyone that’s doing it out there!!

My first introduction to Rush is when a friend of mine at the time introduced me to their album when *A Farewell to Kings* where the song Cygnus X-1 just blew my mind.
Rush was given the Order of Canada for their charity work, and inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
Neil Peart (RIP) the last and best drummer for Rush was and still is after his death earlier this year, Paulina's (the drummer for The Warning) idol.

Great reaction!! We Rush fans usually have you make your way up to some “2112” but you took it pretty good!! It’s phenomenal! These are my 3 favorite musicians to come up the ladder in the last 40 yrs!! They earned it alll!! Excellent musicians! You should check out “The Spirit of Radio”, “ The Trees”, and you should definitely check out some live stuff like “YYZed-Live in Rio” is a good one to watch them work it on-stage!! One of the best live bands of all time!! RIP Neil!!

New subscriber here. Welcome to the world of Rush. They have a huge catalog of music. You should read up on them a little bit. There's an excellent documentary about them on Netflix currently "Rush: Beyond the lighted stage."

Only criticism I have is with the RUSH video itself as with all other versions of this album side, is that with the original album, inside there were not only the lyrics but there is notation preceding each song setting up the scene. Without reading the notation the gist of the story gets lost if only following the lyrics. There is one version posted where someone created animation that is so far from the story it is awful. Below is a link which includes all the liner notes as well as lyrics.

Sorry not really understanding your train of though here?An outstanding album from a band who were always and will be top of their game.No need to follow linear notes to understand the album, stunning album, stunning songs, stunning band!!!
