Thank you for this video. For years I've been hearing that the iPad isn't up to the tasks done by a Mac but always gives video editing as the example. I'm not a video editor and don't plan to be so other than that I've wondered what the real differences were. You've done that excellently. I have both and both do what I want them to do but in my zone of tasks, the iPad is, for me, a laptop replacement and even more as the multiple form factors of tablet, laptop, touch screen, and pencil capabilities makes it the winner.
I recommend using iPad Pro without the keyboard as much as possible. That touchscreen experience is like you said “No joke”. It’s so fast and amazing and something a pc laptop can never replicate. I love using my iPad Pro for everything. And I mean everything except doing work on work programs for a company. Something I don’t want anyways ha. I agree with you. I’m a lawyer, and I use both devices together. I use my MacBook Air to write motions and briefs and to manage files. But but I use my iPad Air for reading opinions and reports, for legal research, watching videos and photos, consulting databases, managing my calendar, making court appearances by zoom, and limited writing like texts and emails. This is it, finally a comment that I related to the most. But one question though; could you accomplish everything you do on your Macbook and do all of it with the iPad?
Nail on the head. The biggest problem with the current iPad lineup in regards to the Pro series is….why? The air can do exactly what the current pro can do or you can even get an older Pro for nearly the same cost as the current air and get a better display and speakers. The current pro is a huge miss solely due to iPadOS.
I didn’t really understand the file transfer issue you were having. You have several options for selecting Files. Hitting the select key at the top and picking the files, clicking a free space and dragging a square (which i never use ) or what I use most often as it’s a touch interface along with a keyboard interface, long press a file then tap the other files you want to copy and drag across. If you hit the drop down in the folder title you will see what the size of the folder is, though i agree this could be in the status bar as an option along with the remaining device storage but that has never been a huge concern for me tbh. I grew up on windows and made the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard my main personal device about 3 years ago while still using windows for work. Got a M3 16” Macbook pro recently and honestly I find the window management so clunky compared to Windows and IPad OS. There’s so much customization and 3rd party apps needed to make the OS tolerable. Ipad OS may have its limitations but navigating it is intuitive, plesaurable and efficient.

When you put it into perspective i guess you really need to say i really really need the Ipad Pro.Even the Ipad Air with keyboard is more expensive than the Macbook AIR. Nice video. Well thought out and executed. I think you said your MacBook had 8gb of ram. For regular usage plus some video and photo editing, is the 8gb enough? Could you produce your video with it, or would you need more ram?
To turn any app fullscreen all it takes is to click on the 3 dots on the top edge of the app and select Full Screen, no need to manually adjust it to make it fullscreen… You even have a keyboard shortcut for that (Globe + F). Come on, this is already an unfair comparison, so if you leave these little things out and make it look ridiculous, it makes it very misleading to someone that honestly has this doubt and is on the market for either an iPad or MacBook. The iPad has flaws and limitations when you try to make it behave like a MacBook, but it can also do tasks that a MacBook cannot dream of (unless you pair it with (expensive) accessories), so each of them have a market and this type of comparison videos should focus on the pros and cons of each of them, instead of showing what one cannot do. 10:28
Many of the iPad problems you mention are not really because of limitation of the OS, but of the way of use. Just saying, in Mac OS yo can also have so many apps open it’s really hard to find a window. Just close yor apps when you aren’t using them.

Should I upgrade to 11 or 13 M4 iPad Pro? Also, is the cellular edition worth it? Currently have the 2018 11 iPad Pro without cellular. (iPad Air and Mini are 60hz)
the 15 is better from a window size stand point. while browsing. some pages look wierd on the 13 inch cos of the screen size. you could end up having to reduce the screen zoom size from 100 to about 75 just to render a full size desktop webpage. if you can afford the 15 go for it
Why not both? - The M1 iPad 12.9" which is already complete overkill can be had for 1/3 of the price of the M4. You can literally buy a MacBook Pro M1 and a 12.9" iPad M1 and have money left over for a weekend away somewhere... vs just an M4 iPad. For me the iPad is more or an accessory for my MacBook Pro, sometimes it's nice to have an extra display on the road, or to just lounge around consuming content. Despite trying many times to make it a productivity device, it's just too crippled. Like you showed: awful file management, very limited multitasking, pro apps are crippled and very limiting, forget software development or devops work, desktop publishing is very clunky too, just very little it's actually optimal for.
I'm so back and forth. I'd LOVE the iPad for work, but a lot of my use cases are using Google's Suite (Sheets, Docs, Slides) I'm a paraprofessional at a public school, I have a DOE provided windows laptop, but it can't work the extra duties I take on at my school. I'm responsible for creating flyers, setting up events, creating presentations / lesson plans and of course, helping students. I'd LOVE to use the pencil for a lot of the work, but the iPad versions of the apps are nowhere near the desktop client's version. On the other hand, a MacBook could do what my DOE laptop would do, just more efficiently.
I feel the same way! I need to buy a new device for an elderly family member, and the struggle is between the MacBook Air M3 and an iPad Air M2 with a keyboard. They are used to the iPad and could probably do almost anything they want on it. However, the MacBook can do more, and the price is the same(when including the keyboard). The iPad, on the other hand, has a more user-friendly aesthetic; you can pick it up and start consuming content more easily, although on a smaller screen. The dilemma is real.
Yeah, this is the reason why I have both lol although I am debating if I should keep the magic keyboard on my iPad or just return it. I use my MacBook when I need a keyboard anyways and I’ve noticed I use my iPad mostly for Contant consumption and tablet things.
I use MAC on the Mini. Don’t prefer it on small laptops. Feels antiquated . iPad M4 is a game changer for me. Screenshots are simple. (Shift + Option 4) . Really special Pro Pen drawing & writing experience for my work. Spit screen works great. File copy is fine with keyboard shortcuts on new M Keyboard.
I do primarily animation in After Effects and Blender on my MacBook Air M3, and none of these apps are supported on the iPad Pro M4, so I think MacBooks in general are better if you are primarily into animation. Btw, that MacBook Air I have has 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM on it.
Great review here. I am in a similar situation with the M2 iPad Pro 11-inch 8/256 and M2 MacBook Air 13.6-inch 8/256. Technically, my iPad has the unbinned M2 with 10 GPU cores while my MacBook has 8. I do all my serious work on my MacBook as it is just so much more reliable. You have stated some great points there so I often use the iPad on cramped spaces and the MacBook on a desk or on my lap. The iPad proves itself useful for graphics design, Procreate, notetaking, and even meetings but basically sucks at everything else. Some time ago, I decided to sell my Magic Keyboard as I feel it adds unnecessary bulk to my iPad. I feel like the iPad is never becoming a laptop replacement at least for me. I got a slim folio case for my iPad and I was so happy. Using the iPad as a tablet is such a liberating choice and I am never looking back. The iPad is better as a second screen and drawing tool as the keyboard is literally useless in that regard. It almost feels like I have to force myself to use it as opposed to my MacBook. Even my 11-inch iPad Pro M2 isn't that much lighter than my 13-inch MacBook Air. There is simply no reason for me to pick the iPad Pro over the MacBook for most of my work. In fact, 80% of my iPad usage is as a second screen for my Mac and the remaining 20% is a mix of drawing and notetaking, which is nothing intensive. I did try video editing with it, with or without the keyboard. It feels clunky and finicky. I don't make use of the touch screen as well. Apple showed how useful the Apple Pencil is for precise cuts but it is more or less useless. They should instead give users a more precise pointer.
If I was on abandoned island I would definitly pick Samsung Galaxy Book 4 pro. You have machine you can game on, make videos, also do some sketching with SPen. They are really powerful nowadays.
Great job explaining and curating the differences of why I must use both. Would love to both combined but that doesn’t appear to be happening. Great work.
the OS is what makes me always go for the macbook. I just replaced my old 2017 macbook pro with a new macbook air and was also thinking about buying an ipad pro but using macOS is just nicer to me. I feel limited on ipad OS. Also I like my trackpad and keyboard and the fact that I dont need to spend money on extras since the macbook comes with everything included.

I am a high school student, I can sue whatever iPad or Mac as my studying device, I need to take at least 6 subjects' notes, I already have a Windows gaming laptop at home and I use it as a desktop. In that case which one is more suitable for me? iPad pro 2024, 11inch 256g with Apple Pencil Pro OR M3 Macbook Air 13 inch 16+256(or 512)? I do not need to run very hard task like video editing or 3D art. Can anyone give me some valued suggestion, thanks very much,
Like you said as a student the iPad can’t really be beaten. So I will choose that one, I will even sell my MacBook because there is nothing I can’t do with my iPad that I can do on my MacBook.
my personal opinion, I will choose Mac over iPad. I used iPad Pro 11inch cellular before with Logitech pro keyboard. Still, there are functions does not working on iPad. So, I change to Mac Pro later.
You can actually make things appear full screen in Stage Manager on external display, click the 3 dotted menu in app of choice and choose Fullscreen. Using my IPad Air M2 as a daily work device, along with Cloud PC via MS Windows app (beta). Full fledged Win11 within my IPad, fullscreen on external monitor is awesome.. aside from the costs of course.
One thing needs to be stated and acknowledged here. The M4 iPad Pro‘s limitations as pointed out in this video are entirely imposed by Apple. They are there because Apple for reasons unknown has decided to impose them. It’s on Apple software engineers to lift this embargo on the iPad Pro and it’s operating system. Count the number of times you’ve been forced to go back to the MacBook all because of artificial restrictions imposed on what a very powerful and capable M4 iPad Pro can do, and all this to protect MacBook sales and reputation as a work horse computer. You can play and consume content on both the iPad Pro and either the MacBook Pro or Air. The evolution of the iPad Pro has been slow and painful. Hopefully Apple continues to listen to its loyal customers and fixes all the issues you pointed out. It’s the right thing to do.
Subscribed! You’ve nailed the issues with IPad OS. It’s frustrating as it should be so much more. If we have Pro models I expect Pro features. I know we won’t ever get MacOS on iPad. Apple have been fairly clear on this, yet some issues should be prioritised in a release as opposed to ‘Calculator’. Better file management. The blank canvas second screen. Clamshell mode. The ‘bug’ with external display volume / icons appearing on the iPad not the second screen. Better multi tasking! Maybe one day a convergence of operating systems will happen. Until then, Apple please at least fix some basic flaws.
Agreed Using Surface Pro 11 ed for now until Apple gets their shit together. I still prefer Mac OS, Apple UI experience overall, and the ease of family being in apple ecosystem.
I wouldn’t suggest making the iPad like a mac OS / Laptop replacement. Just make the Damn Quality of life improvement mentioned in the Video already APPLE! Been a while now!
I’m studying Business Admin Cert 3.. I’m frustrated that the MS Word app doesn’t have complete features on iPad.. I hate Windows computer.. so I’m thinking of getting a Macbook Air M3😭
As a software developer I need the real operating system no contest. I’ve seen some hacks for compiling c++ on an iPad but I’d just never bother. I love my iPad but to me it’s going to stay a peripheral unless they make some major OS changes. I still have an older one but I love the pencil and I’d upgrade if they came out with something that compelled me to upgrade. One user? That’s what slays me about visionOS too. I really want to log into my work Apple account in addition to my personal one 😵
The tablet samsuns s9 ultra can turn from a laptop to a desktop with the press of a bottom, so it s way better that the ipad if you have work to do. If you want just to draw and consume content, then pick the ipad
I really wanted to like the new iPad Pro M4, unfortunately there are just too many sacrifices over my MacBook Air M1. I found myself only reaching for the iPad when I want to watch TH-cam or shop online. Anytime work needed to be done I grabbed my MacBook. I even tried forcing myself to use it exclusively for a week, but became increasingly frustrated at how long it took to do simple tasks. Things that would normally take me a second on my MacBook now took multiple steps and I had to find weird work arounds. They need to just give people the option to use macOS on it and call it a day. It’s just silly at this point.
I want a Mac mini and iPad Pro combo. Just for the basic stuff iPad is great and to get “work” done Mac’s does the job. But i wish my iPad can remote onto my Mac easily so I don’t have to always go to my office for quick “work” things
A the comparison is not fair but even if it is being compared, sooner or later you will realize if your work is mostly app based iPad is the way to go. But if you need desktop basics then MacBook makes sense, iPad is a better extension for those who like touchscreen option and do not want to hold a phone as that is too small, MacBook is too big, the 11 inch iPad is light, travel friendly and with next AI coming a lot will be changing.
Great video thanks! Dont have a home laptop (only my work laptop. And I have and iPad Air 5 gen for home/kids. Im looking for something than can become my home and personal device. Not sure if I should get an IPad Pro 11/13 or just go for a laptop. Main use kids homework, photo editing, watch videos/movies, browsing etc. Appreciate the help 😂
Your videos are consistently amazing and well produced. However, I don’t understand the choice of that weird background music that seems right out of a Tom and Jerry episode, quite distracting from what you were saying like around 10:20
Hahah truth be told, that particular segment had a different song but weirdly TH-cam flagged it despite being something that I am paying for so I had no choice but to replace it at the last second.
Ultimately, the iPad should win overall in the UI category because of its multitouch screen. First the apps have to support it, then we have to learn many new UI paradigms, then finally we'll never go back to a mouse & trackpad for such manipulations
Having shot part of the video in a sunny area I was wondering if you noticed and slow-downs with the M4 Air, back when I had my 13" M2 Air it was impossible to use it under direct sunlight for long periods of time because it would overheat, lose performance and then shut down completely.
The problem with everyone is that they’re trying to use the iPad as a laptop and wanting all the laptop class functionality. But the fact is, it isn’t. And it never will be. Period. Let’s put aside the fact that Apple will never allow macOS on iPads cause that’ll hurt their MacBook lineup, the iPads are just not supposed to be used like a laptop. They’re 2 completely different product categories! That’s why it’s called a tablet and a laptop, not a laptop lite and a laptop. People just need to understand that tablets are just not meant to be used like that and stop asking for unreasonable stuff to happen 🙄🤦🏻♂️
That is not the problem with people. People are right. That is THE problem of the iPad. That others have solved many years ago. How can you claim that a tablet HAS to limit to 4 windows that can run at the same time ? Or that a tablet HAS to kill a batch editing or video conversion if you just switch to another tab ? Or that a tablet HAS to be limited in ways it support external monitors ? Or that a tablet HAS to have a terrible Finder ? Or that.. .why ? Stockholm syndrome?
Tech TH-camrs try not to compare an iPad Pro to a MacBook Air challenge: Impossible I started watching iPad Pro reviews from artists that use their iPads for work. They're a lot more interesting because they use their iPad Pros for what they're best for instead of just trying to use it exactly like a MacBook. Also because they're the ones that actually end up getting use out of the iPad's performance and ram since both affect the canvas size and how many layers you can have while drawing. If you can't decide between a MacBook Air and an iPad Pro, get the MacBook Air. If the work you're doing is basic enough that you think either device could work, the iPad Pro's never going to be a cheaper or easier alternative.
@@messicomps344 What I am saying is the OS is what makes the iPad limited compared to Mac OS. They can change the screen add a new keyboard and Apple Pencil but until the OS is made to be more like Mac OS it can not fully replace a laptop when compared
I am doing all of my daily PC work on an ipad pro since A9X. Right now, I am using M4 from day one and are really amazed by this unrivaled performance power. The M4 is standalone and unique, standing on top number one place for months now. Those overpriced childish Macbooks with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD are just ridiculous! But, both macOS and iPadOS are really oldfashioned, weird in using, intransparent and too often restricted and unlogically.
The 13"' iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil costs two times as much as an M3 13" MB Air in most of European countries. I'm Italian and that's the case here. There you go, I rest my case and nothing more needs to be added. Same as what the iPad adds to the user experience compared to that of a MacBook: nothing. Great video anyways

We can do coding in ipad?
I'm so back and forth. I'd LOVE the iPad for work, but a lot of my use cases are using Google's Suite (Sheets, Docs, Slides)
I'm a paraprofessional at a public school, I have a DOE provided windows laptop, but it can't work the extra duties I take on at my school.
For google photos organization, which is the better tool to do this task? On macbook air or ipad air?
Yeah, this is the reason why I have both lol although I am debating if I should keep the magic keyboard on my iPad or just return it. I use my MacBook when I need a keyboard anyways and I’ve noticed I use my iPad mostly for Contant consumption and tablet things.
I hear you
@@ThisIsE thanks for responding, big fan of your work.
Great Review ! I love Both :)
What is the Widget you use to show Memory and Storage ?
What do you think about MacBook Air 15”?
Mid-range is an excellent, future-proof option.
If I was on abandoned island I would definitly pick Samsung Galaxy Book 4 pro. You have machine you can game on, make videos, also do some sketching with SPen. They are really powerful nowadays.
😂
what about battery life differences?
Great job explaining and curating the differences of why I must use both. Would love to both combined but that doesn’t appear to be happening. Great work.
Glad it was helpful!
What Apple Watch Ultra watch band are you using?
The production quality on this is insane!🙌🏽
Glad you think so!
the OS is what makes me always go for the macbook. I just replaced my old 2017 macbook pro with a new macbook air and was also thinking about buying an ipad pro but using macOS is just nicer to me. I feel limited on ipad OS. Also I like my trackpad and keyboard and the fact that I dont need to spend money on extras since the macbook comes with everything included.
i need them both on different occassions. i have the the macbook air m3 and ipad pro 3rd gen. i like them both
Nothing wrong about that
didn’t really understand the file transfer issue you were having. You have several options for selecting Files. Hitting the select key at the top and picking the files, clicking a free space and dragging a square (which i never use ) or what I use most often as it’s a touch interface along with a keyboard interface
Can anyone give me some valued suggestion, thanks very much,
On June 10, perhaps Apple will announce that the iPad Pro will do everything at the Mac does and that you don’t need a Mac if you buy the iPad Pro
They'd have to do a complete redesign of the iPad pro which just won't happen
@@messicomps344 they just did a redesign just came out
@@messicomps344WWDC will unleash M4 power on the iPad. iPad OS redesign will be awesome!!!!
Not happening, sorry.
@@bryanbuff But if they don’t do it. I will not upgrade. I hope that helps. I hope that helps you to convince them.
They should just charge for a macOS Software premium for IPad literally could be done it runs on ARM now
Like you said as a student the iPad can’t really be beaten. So I will choose that one, I will even sell my MacBook because there is nothing I can’t do with my iPad that I can do on my MacBook.
MacBook Air 15” and iPad Pro M4 11” is a great combo
my personal opinion, I will choose Mac over iPad. I used iPad Pro 11inch cellular before with Logitech pro keyboard. Still, there are functions does not working on iPad. So, I change to Mac Pro later.
I understand Apple's vision as well - protect the revenue they get from the app store!
still wondering why apple don’t make the pencils in black
just noticed your channel. instant sub. FINALLY great and practical reviews and not just specs bla bla !
You can actually make things appear full screen in Stage Manager on external display, click the 3 dotted menu in app of choice and choose Fullscreen.
Using my IPad Air M2 as a daily work device, along with Cloud PC via MS Windows app (beta). Full fledged Win11 within my IPad, fullscreen on external monitor is awesome.. aside from the costs of course.
hey thisise would it be worth getting a macbook air or macbook pro for digital graphics
It depends on your workflow but the latest M3s are very well equipped
Best scene: continuesly tennis match in my head
Great to the point ! 15:22
The best comparison lve ever seen. Thank you
My absolute pleasure
to be fair, especially STEM students cannot just utilize the iPad because of statistical analysis programs only being available on Macos or windows.
Can I use this for trading I use 10 chrome tabs and an external display all at same time ?
so all you do is browsing with tabs right?
you can turn off app review pop up in store settings
I know. I had forgotten for this device
This was great I actually think about this topic quite frequently lol
Thanks
Having this debate currently as my MacBook Pro from 2019 unexpectedly but the dust last week.
I really want to log into my work Apple account in addition to my personal one 😵
i liked the mood of the video. also thank you for the actual examples you showed.
The tablet samsuns s9 ultra can turn from a laptop to a desktop with the press of a bottom, so it s way better that the ipad if you have work to do. If you want just to draw and consume content, then pick the ipad
I have a dedicated video on it ☺️
Of course the iPad for me
I really wanted to like the new iPad Pro M4, unfortunately there are just too many sacrifices over my MacBook Air M1.
Love your videos. Amazing visuals and explanation.
Although The Ipad is very tempting, I decided to go with Mb Air.
Thanks for great comparison!
You have chosen wisely ☺️
I say if you already have a desktop set up like a mac mini m2 then go with the iPad.
I want a Mac mini and iPad Pro combo.
Just for the basic stuff iPad is great and to get “work” done Mac’s does the job. But i wish my iPad can remote onto my Mac easily so I don’t have to always go to my office for quick “work” things
Let's also appreciate the 4:3 aspect ratio of iPad Pro display. It gives a much better user experience.
Good comprehensive comparison while putting productivity at the forefront, I completely agree with you assessment.
10:32 This happens to me ALL the time!! So glad you captured it. This cements in my mind that Apple is not making iPadOS a priority.
Apple products have reached a stage where Pro doesn’t just mean doing more better, but doing more nicer. Nicer screen, nicer colours, nicer materials.
I see your point
The problem is not about the hardwars on ipad, but it is about ipad os.
Amazing work, great review
Glad you liked it
I have the Air 5 and a MacBook Pro 14. For me that covers all the bases, but if I had to choose just one it would be the MacBook.
Exactly my point
I haven’t had any issues tbh
It appears you didn’t watch the video in its entirety
That is not the problem with people. People are right. That is THE problem of the iPad. That others have solved many years ago.
How can you claim that a tablet HAS to limit to 4 windows that can run at the same time ? Or that a tablet HAS to kill a batch editing or video conversion if you just switch to another tab ? Or that a tablet HAS to be limited in ways it support external monitors ? Or that a tablet HAS to have a terrible Finder ? Or that.. .why ?
Stockholm syndrome?
Stranded on a deserted island with blazing fast internet, I think that either device would be sufficient for me to message someone to come rescue me.
Love this M4 iPad 🔥
Hope to get one
Tech TH-camrs try not to compare an iPad Pro to a MacBook Air challenge: Impossible
I started watching iPad Pro reviews from artists that use their iPads for work.
My other question remains unanswered, tho - what about the iPad Air?
compare this with the tab s9 ultra next
I already have a dedicated review on the Ultra
Best comparison ever in my opinion.
Comprehensive comparison, E. Thank you! informative, and as always, entertaining. (Because....why not?! 😉
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have both and the iPad Pro m4 13” is much better than the MacBook.
I really like the quality of content that you post 😮
Except file system rest is all app related issues …
You could make this same video with the M1 & M2 iPad Pro. The M4 does nothing diff it is iPad OS that makes the devices.
That applies to everything though, doesn't it? Hardly anything needs or uses the power of the a17 pro but it's still there
@@messicomps344 What I am saying is the OS is what makes the iPad limited compared to Mac OS. They can change the screen add a new keyboard and Apple Pencil but until the OS is made to be more like Mac OS it can not fully replace a laptop when compared
iPad EZ. Use the built in GPS to get your location, send it to authorities and be rescued from the island.
But, both macOS and iPadOS are really oldfashioned, weird in using, intransparent and too often restricted and unlogically.
just get both. 1 macbook air m2 13 inch and 1 ipad air m2 13 inch
What an incredible review!
Thank you
The 13"' iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil costs two times as much as an M3 13" MB Air in most of European countries. I'm Italian and that's the case here. There you go, I rest my case and nothing more needs to be added. Same as what the iPad adds to the user experience compared to that of a MacBook: nothing.
Great video anyways
I understand your pain
@@ThisIsE I have both an M3 Pro MB Pro and an M1 iPad Pro 12.9 with the Magic Keyboard and I can’t use it for anything because Mac apps are just too important. Like not having Raycast or Dropover or a window management app would make even MacOS feel clunky, so yh I have little use for the iPad nowadays
software needs catching up, they dont need to update the hardware every where.
Agree
You've got great quality videos.
