Sometimes a surprise just falls out of the sky and into your lap...and recently we've been talking about the work in progress Neo Geo CD core for MiSTer FPGA. And NOW the Neo Geo CD core functionality has been folded into the Neo Geo AES / Neo Geo MVS core on MiSTer FPGA to give you ever piece of Neo Geo arcade and home console hardware...all in one FPGA core! With Neo Geo CDZ support, Neo Geo Unibios support...and fast loading CD Support!
Be aware there is a NEO GEO CD folder to put your games into now. It's not necessary...you CAN navigate to your Neo Geo CD nested folder in the Neo Geo AES/MVS games folder...but you dont have to!
Update_all will bring down the new core along with the correct bios files if you have BIOS GETTER enabled too!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent build of the Neo Geo core! It's working on MiSTer Main builds now and comes down with update_all...and so far its highly impressive and maybe the best new way to play Neo Geo games! But Neo Geo CD has so many retrogaming hits and some solid exclusives like Puzzle Bobble, Ironclad and Crossed Swords II...along with plenty of Neo Geo AES and MVS hits like Fatal Fury, the King of Fighters, Pulstar, etc etc.
Add to that the entire library of Neo Geo AES best games and Neo Geo hidden gems and you have one of the most impressive cores on MiSTer FPGA! Neo Geo basically feels done!
Can't wait to see if this core get further developments!

I loved anything SNK touches when it came to games even gameplay aside I always enjoyed the quality and detail they put into pixel drawing and animation.

Back in the 90s, we had a local video rental store called Movie Man that rented out consoles none of us kids could afford, including the AES. It was my only hands-on experience with Neo Geo back then besides the MVS at the arcade. I knew I had to have one, maybe, hopefully, one day, but they were unobtainium back then. It wasn't until some decades later I imported a AES from Japan, bought a green MVS to AES adapter, a yellow 161 in 1 cart and when all stacked together still looks ridiculous, but I felt my dream was complete. These days the Mister is just so much more accessible, nearly portable and cycle accurate, it's hard not to go down this fantastic route, especially to those new to the retro game hobby. I salute all those that have contributed to these cores.
I don’t remember our local video joints ever renting anything Neo Geo. They had every other console though

The head games I had to play to be satisfied with my Megadrive after seeing the Neo Geo screenshots.

I knew a Japanese kid back in high school who had a Neo Geo and he had it connected to a Commodore 1084 monitor and even with composite video (he didn't know about RGB) and I thought it was the most awesome thing ever. Back then I would only see a Neo Geo at an arcade or bowling alley.

Wanted always to go back, but feared the loading times, but now finally is the right time to get a Mister.

I’d order direct from Terasic for the DE10. I’ll ask around who’s the best for the rest of the parts in Europe
All I need are the arcade versions of Neogeo games (no animation cuts) WITH the arranged soundtracks. That is the stuff of my dreams. I know there are some ps2 collections that fulfill this dream, but with some trade-offs like emulation bugs, wrong resolution (so no scanlines on crt), load times, etc. Can Mister do this? I hate that modern ports of SNK never have the Arranged music.

Serious questions: If I wanted to play Sam Show 3, why would i do this on FPGA Neo Geo CD instead of FPGA Neo Geo MSV/AES?
Just add the CD files to MiSTer and select the load cd vs cart option in the menu
should we enable the mild cropping option for the cd games? iirc it has a slightly lower rez than the original carts

Hello, for some reason my MiSTer does not see Darksoft NeoGeo files, in a ZIP archive or in a packed form, it is defined as, for example, "mlslug.zip" an empty folder. Is this a kernel update or should it be like this? Files with the .neo extension open without problems.
You need the xml file. Do you have that?
@@VideoGameEsoterica previously I just ran a file like "mlslug.zip" everything worked. and now I open the file and it is empty.

I'd like to know the meaning of "Max 330 Mega"
That was the maximum rom size the system could address at the start. A 330Mbit cart. After bank switching was added to the carts this maximum became “not a thing”

I think the most economic way to play NeoGeo accurately is still the MVS. Dual Slot boards with stereo sound are around 160$ and many games still below the 200$ mark. Connected with a CRT they give the best experience. U can also get the crappy made 160in1 card, if you insist ;-). While the Neo Geo core is very good, it is not 100% accurate / has some light glitches from which (I read around a year ago or so) can only be completely addressed by a future rewrite of that core (which will hopefully happen).
Yes MVS is still the most economical. Not saying it’s cheap…but cheaper

Does the Neo Geo core support 2P? On MAME, I can get the option to play a 2P game after adding two coins, but it never seems to be an option on Mister. Do you know why that is?
Should work fine. You can also just set the Unibios to Console not MVS
@@VideoGameEsoterica Is this a chute setting in the hardware dip settings? As in, it will only allow a 2P game if it detects a coin drop from a specific player chute?
I just put the MVS game into FREE PLAY and was able to start a 2P game.

Yeah, I know where in the UniBIOS to set the Region and Mode, but if you want to run the core in MVS and not AES, then you’ve got my problem.
Just to add, I am running the Neo Geo core on the Mistercade in a generic multi-Cade that I put together. The multi-Cade only has one button wired to 1P coin. That means that when I go to configure the controls within the Neo Geo core, it has no 2P coin button to mirror to. Unlike MAME, you can’t just set the 2P coin to whatever button you want. The 2P controls are mirrored from whatever you define as 1P.
I tried going into the Neo Geo Hard dip settings, but it appears that they can only be configured within the Core setting menu dip switches. I thought that if I could somehow change the ‘coin type’ setting from ‘2 chutes’ to ‘1 chute’ that multiple coin drops in the 1P coin chute would be enough to also start a 2P game, but I’m not seeing how that’s possible.
So I just got a tip from a user on the MisterFGPA support forum for Neo Geo, ‘Apparently you need a Euro or Japanese BIOS to allow 2p to get credited from the 1p coin slot.’

Or you can use your stock Dreamcast (12x speed drive) with the NEO4ALL boot disc and play any NeoGeo CD game burned onto a CD-R !
