Saturn or 6-button Mega Drive pad layout and d-pad are my absolute favourites and then an 8bitdo M30 is my go-to for everything SEGA, PC-Engine and arcade (including NEO-GEO). It's also decent for Amiga and Commodore 64 games, once you remap some keyboard keys to the controllers not to mention the dreaded up-to-jump. For Nintendo games and arcade games requiring analog controls, I like to use the 8bitdo SF30 Pro, which has a SNES layout but also a couple of analogue sticks that come in handy. I like to remap NES controls to fit a SNES layout (in practice B-A becomes Y-B). Sacrilegious, I know, but I'm not really bothered because I didn't grow up with the NES and I'm not very familiar with it. Playing NES games as if they were SNES ones is fine to me. That's my Raspberry Pi 4 setup actually, but I hope I can use much of it with the MiSTer once I get one.
I have every controller you showed but for the MiSTer I just got a single dedicated PS5 pad for it, and use it wired. Works great especially with all the available buttons. :) Although I DO also sometimes use a USB 2600 joystik also for the VCS games.
MiSTer and controller? Instant like. My recommended controllers for MiSTer : Sn30 pro for Nintendo cores. Has enough buttons. Neo geo mini controller for the NG core. Sega Saturn wireless controller for the Sega cores. Also using the tg16 wireless controller. And the hori fighting commander.

I can play everything with a PS4 controller but I do want to buy one of those PC Engine 8Bitdos to have the feeling of that console I never had; and btw the N64 controller can also provide you with that 6 button Sega layout you love so much.
I ended up getting the blister. It has 2 connectors for llpa. So next to no latency at all when in llpa. It works fine without the llpa settings for the other cores. The snack adapter will work the same way. I think your stuck with one controller, idk. I grabbed the blissbox 4 play for the pc. damm was hard to get but came with all the adapters id need for both uses. i may order some odd one's like neogeo. But the essentials are there. Sometimes it's hard to find a nice controller because it's ageing. I guess a nice fresh controller is always nice if your using usb.
I have the black retrobit Saturn controller and for some reason it doesn't work with either a usb cable or via the usb 2.4 receiver dongle. You didn't have to do anything special to get it to work? I wonder if retrobit has changed the internals on newer versions making it incompatible with mister?? It's a bummer since I have two of them. :(
@@VideoGameEsoterica I finally solved it - it was a simple fix. I didnt know the blue LED (3-button) was required for it to work on misterFGA - it was in red led mode (6 button). All 6 buttons work in 3-button mode - go figure!

So are you saying you use original NeoGeo controllers for your MAME and Now Geo stuff through a Daemonbite adaptor? Lastly, what about Nintendo 64 control pads? What type do you use for them? Original N64 pads? And what about GameCube? Do you use Daemonbite for those too and use original controls?

something i see almost no one talk about is the insane catch-all controller that is the "Hori Fighting Commander OCTA". Its unique layout is pretty much perfect for emulation in most use cases and even has a good solution for things as awkward as the N64 and Neo Geo with its analog stick (which still has an octa gate like a gamecube or N64 controller!)
Hi!! Do you have any of the Nintendo Switch Online controllers to test out and show off? For example, the 2xNES Controllers, and the SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive controllers. There's also a Japan exclusive Mega Drive controller with 6 buttons. The functionality (as far as I can tell) is identical to the Switch Pro Controller and really solid! It's been a tremendous amount of fun to play with the MiSTer, jumping between cores and switching between controllers really seamlessly. They're not exactly cheap, but the experience with them has been pretty great and may have slipped under a few peoples radars.
Heres hoping to see a Neo Geo controller from 8bitdo, it probably has to do with licensing as to why they haven't, seeing as SNK were the ones that released them for their mini arcades/arcade stick. I have almost every controller released from 8bitdo, so that would make my collection complete :) Love my MiSter setup, been tinkering with it every day since I received it.

SNK really made all the mistakes lol I need to finish my Daemonbite for my AES controller. I did it for my six button stick but the DB15 connectors I have don’t fit into the larger recesses of the AES stick so I need to rethink my setup
For the 8bitdo PC engine controller does the lack of the turbo switches make a difference for some games? If i get an original turbo grafx controller and run it via SNAC do you think I would have any problems? Thanks.
I have a similar setup but with mostly wired saturn and 8bit do pro. Also using the classic nes and famicom controllers that they don't make anymore, sadly. Also have a amiga like joystick but urgh, I use that to remember the bad old days then swap to something that isn't objectively awful like the M30.
I bought both Retro-Bit Saturn and Genesis Pads (2.4Ghz Wireless) but cant map the HOME button for MENU in Mister,is this possible at all? or I have to use SELECT or some button combo?

Does Mister remember the controller ID & button assignments made (per core) when you unplug the controller/dongle and plug something else in? I ask because if you are swapping controllers all the time depending on the core being used, I would have thought there would be the potential for the controller ID's to get mixed up? This happens in MAME on PC for example when hot swapping USB controllers. Would be great if Mister remembers though, as I plan on using all the original controllers using adapters. Cheers
It remembers. At least it has for me. I swap wireless controllers around and it always picks up on the button assignments I’ve provided via the mapping option when I first started using the controller

For those looking for 6 button controllers, beware retrobit is still shamelessly selling their first faulty batch of USB Saturn controllers, and build quality isn't great with the newer ones, both genesis-inspired Retroflag and (if you're not in a budget) 8bitdo 2.4ghz controllers feel way better at hand and come with extra buttons (note 8bitdo one requires a button combo to switch from Genesis Mini mode, heart+down, to PC/Switch mode, heart+left, to get separate Select and Home buttons)
why do you need to "Tilt right" when starting the console? Also do you think adding a USB extension is a good idea or does it increase input lag? Lastly is having a USB Hub for stuff like Wifi, Bluetooth adapters a good idea to reduce cluster on the Mister?
On the analog stick? I’m not sure why that’s in the controller mapping. I think just so it can recognize what device is inputting currently. I USB extension cable? That should not really be introducing much of any lag unless your talking about a massive length of cable. Signal degradation shouldn’t be much of an issue on any standard extension
My controller isn't working, I just bought this on eBay and plugged it in at my local arcade with the help from the guy that works there but when I came home I couldn't get the controller to do anything. I tried every usb port and not sure what I'm doing wrong.
8bitdo 2.4 ghz M30 (Genesis mini w/ usb dongle) is my go to for MISTer. The only problem is that you have to replug it in everytime you turn MISTer on. Other than that, its awesome and only $25.

The 8bitdi Saturn 2.4 ghz controller CANNOT be used as a wired controller. It only can be used as wireless. Just a FYI so nobody gets confused or misguided. 👍

Since the MiSTer's USB hub has so many ports, can I plug in all the wireless receivers simultaneously? Would love to have 4-button and 6-button layouts hooked up without having to switch receivers all the time
Has anyone used two 8bitdo (2.4 mode) at the same time? I can only get Mister to recognise one, but not the second... I'm wondering if this is ever possible, as perhaps the 2.4 signal can only interpret one of these controllers at a time
am having issues with the 8bit do sn30 pro SNES look like controller, i have to keep paring it everytime i turn off the mister or reset, but the 8bit di arcade works fine. strange

What about lag with USB? I’ve changed the config to increase the sampling to 1000 but I still think that using Xbox one controller or usb competition 5000 joystick gets into situations where it misses an input. I saw that someone had a spreadsheet listing input latencies for different controllers, and that Xbox was one of the laggiest. I’m thinking of 8bitdo m30 2,4ghz for 1ms latency, but they are out of stock everywhere oct 21.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I’ve got my mister hooked up to a plasma via hdmi atm and honestly, I don’t notice lag between pressing a button and seeing movement on screen, but I absolutely do notice when input from the controller is missed: that has a dramatic effect on how the core feels. I do have a B&O 25” CRT but don’t have the IO board and VGA to SCART cable yet, but even if I notice some slight improvement on the CRT, I think the controller lag has a much greater bearing on the experience.
Hmm. Well I’d try a different controller. Dropping inputs is wholly different from input lag. Most of the time dropped inputs are a core issue in the game
the xbox 1X /PS4, PS5 controllers are not that bad for Neo-Geo. TheNeoGeo CD had those control Pads so that layout is similar to Snes. But, Arcade Sticks are best for Neo Geo :)
So far basically every system pre PS1 / Saturn...and PS1 and Saturn are being worked on. That’s probably the top end though before the FPGA is tapped on logic

Nothing special on my end. Must have been a pcb or firmware change. Maybe check your firmware and see if there is an update for the controller?

An awesome third party Neo Geo stick would be great. The CD pad they released with the Mini was such a bummer since there was no click in the stick

Yes if you Google mister input latency you will probably find the spreadsheet again and see about lag. It all depends IMO how much the tv adds too.

The buttons aren’t the issue for me. It’s the D pads. I need that click of an arcade stick

Yeah, to hell with using modern controllers for emulation. Doesn't feel right unless you are using the original formats per game system.

@@VideoGameEsoterica lol I tried using the the buttons on top of the mister but none of them work. Not sure how to map them or of mapping is needed. The mapping option only says menu, not user osd or reset
You don’t map the OSD and User buttons to a controller. You use the buttons on the MiSTer itself. If they aren’t working that’s odd
