    Ecuador is checking most of my boxes. I've been living in the Philippines for over 4 years, foreigners cannot own property here and the crowding and pollution are terrible in the cities. Ecuador is a beautiful country with beautiful people. It's true to say that it's not expensive either. However, as someone who has lived in Ecuador in the past there are other things that are not so positive. Security and services for example. In my three years there I was mugged twice and an armed intruder entered my house. The mountains around Cuenca are beautiful but I personally would fear for my safety living there - especially as a "gringo". Services also can be slow and cumbersome. Apologies, just my experience!

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Byrne, Thanks for taking the time to share your personal experience. I agree that safety can be a big issue. This video is just a short piece of information about what is possible. I encourage anyone interested in moving to another country to do a lot of homework first to get a full picture from different perspectives. Thanks for sharing.

      We haven't had any such experiences, thankfully, and we've been here 9 years. I think one has to be cautious and aware anywhere they choose to live. We're also used to Latin America and it's differences in services. It's certainly not North America in that regard, but it hasn't been all that difficult at all. We love the peace and tranquility of our lives.

    • @lephilosopheinconnu3952
      @lephilosopheinconnu3952 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry for what happened Tom. But I will say that those things can happen just about anywhere in the world. I was robbed and scammed in Tx . Does that change my point of view on America or americans. If course not. If you feel unsafe just hire security personnel and you'll be fine. Just saying

      Hello there. Actually, the cost of property has increased quite a bit since we purchased - it's now approximately $20,000 for a hectare (2.5 acres). Still not bad. Building costs have also risen, but also terrific in comparison to the U.S.

  • @billburgess4720
    @billburgess4720 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Building a small home in the coastal areas has to be costly....Figuring a per sqft cost for a 1.5 bath home with a high ceiling or even a loft would be a difficult task from out of the country. I have an idea for a compound system featuring 400sqft casitas but each site would require 800 sqft. and not knowing the sanitation and water supply problems as well as power would probably require an in-town property location.

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question. You can always sell a property if you decide to leave. I think many places in Ecuador have great potential for making a profit in real estate, especially if you are trying to diversify your investments.

    • @vegaszoom6139
      @vegaszoom6139 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The idea of buying a property can be a great idea but I don’t really think selling that quick can be that easy. This is for most part the drawback in the real world: there really is NO BUYER willing enough to buy that property.
      But the idea of living in Ecuador as you promoted is indeed a perfect idea especially for those who want to enjoy life at it’s best at a very affordable cost.

    • @LivingOverseasTV
      @LivingOverseasTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are some buyers since many foreigners are moving to the area. I agree that a mountain property like this one would likely not move quickly. I have friends that have done well flipping property near the beach but I wouldn't recommend anyone to invest in a foreign country without spending time there first. Personally, I rent out my place in the states and rent as I travel. This allows me to live in many different places which is great for me. If I were a young man, I would jump at the opportunity to invest in a beach area in Ecuador.

      Maria Guardiola, I'm no longer in Mexico but I expect prices to be about ten percent higher. An AirBnb will likely be a lot higher through winter but if you are there and look around you will likely find a place advertised only with a sign and a phone number. That is the best way to get a good deal on a rental.

    How much did it cost to get the power company to run electric cables so far off the beaten path?

    • @jeffandtrishlaplaca5975
      @jeffandtrishlaplaca5975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's really not that far off the beaten path at all, thankfully. But we did have to purchase our own transformer so electrical cost about $7,000.

    That's way too expensive for a local Ecuadorian living expenses, I bought a 10-acre land for $2,000 and I built a 3 bedroom home for $8,000 .. you need to buy and act like the locals not like arrogant nauseous rich foreigners

    There's NO WAY anyone over 55 should even begin to consider such a move given health care access alone. A periodic vacation home? Fine. But then that means you should also be doing so well financially, that you could afford to build in the Mediterranean, and good luck with that! :p

      Phoenix Chastaine Agree. Well, we should understand this type of presentation is profit oriented because they are in the business of this kind. My concern is what if my kids are not moving out there in Ecuador then who will take care of this house. I don’t think it is that easy to sell them and return back to the US.
      Healthcare can be an issue too but I think Ecuadorian doctors can easily manage the more usual types of illness like diabetes, heart , etc. Probably the issue can be how much do we need to pay for a decent private health insurance and how affordable it can be given the time we need it? Unlike in the US healthcare co-pays are killing us and also the cost of medical insurance.

      Phoenix, Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I feel like the healthcare in Ecuador is very good in both Cuenca and Quito. As you get further away from the big cities the quality drops fast. Here is a link to some interviews I did with friends sharing their actual experiences. th-cam.com/video/fRsYRxoo8_Y/w-d-xo.html

      @@vegaszoom6139, Hopefully, I will make some money from this at some point, but my main goal is to share the best information I can about living overseas. These places are not for everyone but for someone seeking a change in life or looking for more adventure, I think living overseas can be a great option.
      Most of my friends in Ecuador are paying about $100 USD per month for their private insurance. My young friends are paying less. Most medications are a fraction of the costs of what they are in the USA although some medications aren't available. Often the complete costs of a medical procedure is less than a co-pay would be in the states. Here is a link to a video about medical costs. I would love to know your thoughts after watching it. th-cam.com/video/fRsYRxoo8_Y/w-d-xo.html
      You can rent the complete video on Amazon and get me $2 closer to making a profit ;) Thanks for being a part of the dialogue.

      Amelia and JP were not in Cuenca anymore when the virus hit. They were living in a rural beach town called Olon, now they moved again to a beach city called Manta.
