Mine has been planted out for about 8 years in my garden in Peterborough. It’s in a free draining raised bed with the canopy of a Trachy above it giving it over head protection and some shade. I’ve had about -8 since it was planted but I did put a large builders bag over it during the coldest nights then removed once temps warmed. Never had any damage at all. Great palms. I tried to buy 2 more but they sold out quick.
Hi there, thank you SO much for sharing your experience 🤗 That gives me hope for this one!. I wouldn't mind a few more myself but I can see why they sell out fast. I'm a fan of your channel and love your garden. Thanks again for sharing!
It really is, I’m ready to add another. I’ve checked out the microspadix, hardy down to -8 so will probably need winter protection. I like the look of it though, thank you for pointing it out!
They are so good aren’t they?! I’ve been keeping an eye on this one, and all of a sudden - back in stock! So I treated myself 😊 Thanks for stopping by, have a lovely weekend.
Nice looking palm. I hope you have winter success. If you get it through I will be very tempted to try next spring. Your garden has come on really well, looking great.
I hope so too! I will document its progress on here. The last couple days have really dipped in temperature, I know that we haven’t seen ANYTHING yet with how it can be in the UK. I’ll keep an eye on it and fleece when necessary. Unless we don’t try, we don’t know. Thanks so much for the feedback it’s a work in progress!
I hope so too! A tad nervous but willing to push the boundaries or else I’ll never know what it can withstand. Nice to venture beyond the usual trachys!
Im braving a Alexandra Palm in an extremely sheltered spot over winter, just because I don't have any more space! Good luck! Also, are Red Robins fast growing? My local GC has them at the mo.
Hi there! Lovely to meet a fellow brave gardener! Hopefully the sheltered spot will be perfect for the Alexandra. Hoping the same for this new Chamaedorea. As for the red robins they’ve surprised me with their rate of growth. I have 3 in the garden that are going into their third winter. They started as pot bought shrubs and are now towering over my fence. Evergreen with those pops of red that add consistent and reliable colour. Worth it in any garden!
I had two in pots (Netherlands; zone 9B) and they got killed by a combination of days of rain and light frosts. I'm now trying a smaller one planted out in the garden. I think you are right to give it a sheltered spot. I'm thinking that will probably make just the difference it needs and as it grows it will also become more resilient. By the way; they say these palms don't take full sun but mine withstood blazing sun effortlessly and my garden is on the southwest. I have a couple of seedlings in pots which also seem unfazed
Thank you for sharing this really helpful post. Experience is the best teacher! Mine has taken a heavy frost and good few days of rain so far in this spot. The temperature is due to drop again next week so I will cover it back up with fleece and see how it gets on. If it gets through this winter and becomes established, I think it will have a good chance of survival. Good to know about the sun exposure! I hope your seedlings come through just fine too. It’s a truly beautiful palm and I already know I fancy another! Lovely to meet you, hope the rest of the winter is gentle on your plants.
@@benediktk.8228 Yes, it's because of the coast. Even though it's a small country we go from zone 8b to 9b. But zones are misleading. Florida for instance is zone 8b in some areas but the climate of course is a lot more tropical than here. Zones just indicate the lowest and highest temperatures an area can hit. In a Florida winter the temperature might just briefly dip below zero during a night or so and go up again during the day.
@@MrBaconwhopper Yeah that's a good point. Winter season is still going to be demanding for many plants because of the prolonged relatively cold temperatures. Still, i didn't expect it to be that mild haha.
Hi there, I’m in Birmingham, so 9A according to plantmaps.com. I tend to be experimental anyway, hardiness advice works sometimes, not all. Especially with the climate changes we’ve seen. So I just see what happens😊
Hi there, it has pulled through! Doesn't look as pretty as it did when it went in with all the rain and wind we have had and some of the leaves have browned off. I am hoping that we'll get some new growth through as soon as it warms up!
Hi there, it took winter pretty hard despite being protected. It is currently being nursed back to health in a pot but signs are good for it to bounce back.

@@spaceprophecy3458 That's good to know! I wouldn't mind adding another.
That is a nice palm. I wonder if C. microspadix would be hardy for you outdoors.

It really is and it’s pulled through our mild winter ok👍
@@tropiclaud Good to know. I've just bought one online. I was wondering if it could make it through the winter outside. They seem to be hardy enough.
Hi Claud, it’s me Aniyah
Hey baby!❤️
Those do grow well in New Orleans (also zone 9 but a hot humid 9) they should tolerate the cold winter
Lovely to meet you, thank you for the info! I hope this one will fare well.
