My god! Sam I literally thought that I had missed an announcement or something from a major company! You are way to hard on yourself, my jaw dropped just from the thumbnail! Keep up the incredible work! Edit: while it doesn’t look as good up close, it’s still much better than I (and most others) could do. To be fair, in a lot of ways this is much better than some of the cheaper models on the market (ie: Hornby Railroad, or cheap in terms of quality, Heljan).

@@SamsTrains At this point, you should just incorporate as a model manufacturer.
Also, how about making a LBSCR 4-6-2T locomotive next? It would be large enough for a flywheel.

You could try using high build primer. This is really good at smoothing out imperfections. I’ve used it on fibreglass and it works really well.

This is a project you should feel really proud of, Sam! Your honest and thorough appraisal is a tribute to your character, and not many people could show such an ethical approach to self-criticism. Some of the latest 3D printers seem to be producing less 'textured' results and might be worth trying in future, or you could try constructing a metal foundry in your attic...

This is just awesome and needs to go into production for people to buy! I live just down the road from the North Norfolk railway and have seen the G.E.R Y14 loads of times and I cant believe how good the livery is! The G.E.R is definitely my favourite of the pre-grouping and love learning about it all the time. My great grandfather was also station master at Overstrand station before it closed, wish I lived in the days when these trains still ran regular services. More G.E.R models need to be released in my opinion, especially if they are up to your standard! Cracking work Sam!

A very enjoyable watch, Sam. You're a very skilled chap! That GER livery is stunning.
Since relocating to the Waveney Valley I east Anglia I've become interested in all things Great Eastern / LNER / Eastern Region.
I've pre-ordered the Accurascale J67 (in GER livery, of course) and am the proud owner of a J15 (bought after watching your video on the model) brand new for £65 from DC Kits.
Also now own various LNER types that frequented this part of the world during the steam age.
The one obvious hole in my collection is an Ivatt Standard class 4 mogul, which were - perhaps surprisingly - a regular site in the region post nationalisation.
Anyway, congratulations on your new model.

  • @sullivanrachael

I must congratulate you on this loco. You are really getting beyond simply printing your own simple toy loco; it’s now a scale model and the art of building it with the jigs, paint masks and fixtures show some real thinking towards production. I love the fidelity of the guard irons and cab detail. Those look really good. The Hornby 8F wheel metal tyres look a bit thick and overscale, Romfords for next time? The paint probably needed a higher spray pressure to get a finer finish. I’ll eat my words on the metal handrails - you have made scale appearing handrails - so very well done. When you made such a good job of the body it did upset me that wire handrails were not used because they do look excellent with correct size rail and knobs and withstand handling. Metal handrails are often used commercially after all. I notice the Rapido 16XX uses plastic handrail knobs with painted wire. Buffers - *please* try some lathe turned commercial ones!! For the amount of effort put in it deserves it. Fantastic work though.

    • @SamsTrains

Thank you so much for the kind words and advice! I will keep looking into the wire handrails to see if I can get them right, thanks again!

great locomotive. I love the livery. the Great Eastern Railway (GER) Prussian blue is such a beautiful livery in my opinion. I wish more model locomotives were available in that color. I know the Class J15 0-6-0 locomotive isn't exactly prototypical in that livery, but the sole survivor was painted in this color at one time or another. so yes, I think that Hornby could definitely re-release a version of their oo gauge model and it would look amazing. also, as I've said before, I will certainly be on the lookout for the accurascale GER "Buckjumper" when it's released, as this is the livery that I intend to buy it in. so again, great locomotive, thank you for showing us and good luck with your future videos.

    @aveedub7403 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Sam that's a really brilliant effort from scratch! I was wondering when seeing wheel slip that you could use your favourite rubber tyres for now to assist with pulling power? One other thing there must be a hoard of other modellers out there that could make a metal chassis for you using your template, cast it or from a billet? Sure you've thought about these already! Keep up the amazing work! Have a great bank holiday weekend!

Hey Sam. You’re driving me closer to getting a 3d printer and build models myself. For only 30£ and a bit of work you’ve created a beautiful and unique locomotive. I thought Copperknob was impressive, but this one takes the cake for me. That GER blue looks stunning. A truly unique locomotive only you own. I like how you went with a better motor instead of better weight. The performance makes some manufacturers models look like nothing at the slow speeds. Keep up the good work 👍 I would say you were a bit harsh with the quality I would say 3 stars is good the tender lining is quite striking and the blue Color is like nothing comparable 👌

This came out great! You might actually be able to create "die cast" parts by 3D printing a mold and heating metal to pour into it, it's something we did in one of my classes and it does work- but you might need to find the right metal alloy to do it, and removing the part is a little involved.

With transfers, try putting a gloss coat on first, followed by the transfer using a combination of MicroSet and MicroSol. They are my go to for transfers, then a gloss coat on top to seal them in

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah that's right - that is what I did! My problem this time was that I applied too much gloss to the transfers once printed to strengthen them... it made them super strong, but also too thick... this was with 3 layers of gloss... might have gotten away with 1

  • @kwallace6uk

Love this. A thought with the handrails would be to print the handrails knobs, and then feed Gibson .33mm wire through the knobs. I draw the hole in the knob at 0.8mm, and the printing process reduces this but it is still big enough to take the wire. It is surprising quick to fit the handrails, and it just gives extra strength as well as being straight.

She's stunning Sam. What a fabulous job! Taking your time has certainly paid off. We are wondering. Today, the new Anycubic Photon Mono 2 has been demonstrated on the YT channel Märklin of Sweden. The printer has brought up the level so much so that no streaks or anything can be seen close on camera at 4K. None whatsoever. He printed wagons himself by downloading files for just a few euros, painted and weathered them, and the nett result was that they absolutely look factory standard..., leaving us speechless. Now, we know that you can't do resin printing due to lack of ventilation, but we do raise the question if manufacturers should really be getting worried by now...

To improve the speed thing, maybe you could try doing two gear sets om your next loco to gear it down more? also, for adding weight, if you invested in a diamond tipped nozzle and some metal composite filament, that could up the weight by a lot. Some filaments are over 30% metal. a normal bronze nozzle would erode away, so you'd need a harder tip, but they aren't too expensive, and it's easy enough to swap the nozzle out on a normal 3d printer. The filament costs about twice as much, but it has 3 times the weight, so it would give your models a lot more heft.

Very impressive indeed! That loco passes the two foot rule with flying colours, shows us what we can do without having to shell out on manufacturers' rip off priced locos. Plus you chose a very attactive prototype in a lovely pre-grouping livery :) Runs better than half the other locos you review...
Your scores are pretty accurate to me, exexpt I'd give it another star for quality.

I did a double take when I saw the thumbnail, it's breathtaking! Upon closer inspection it's clear she's not factory, but for a second there I thought this was gonna be a review of some loco from the major ranges, until I remembered you're the only one who's taken a crack at it! It really does look that good, ESPECIALLY in that deep, stunning blue! The transfers turned out quite well, the red lining is so striking, especially on the tender and loco underframes, and I do agree about the handrails, the slimmer size really sells the effect. This is definitely your finest work yet, Sam, it really is in league with many professionally produced locos. It's so cool watching you grow your talents and your collection all at once! You've made something to be very proud of!

Thank you so much! Oh yeah - up close, it pales in comparison to the professional models... those are still the gold standard! Sam :)

Sam, the last time I commented I was rather critical, however I think you have done an excellent job with this model and that your own analysis of your model is insightful. I think that you have found a niche that you should exploit. My suggestions for a future project would be: a 2-4-0 passenger loco, either a GER E4 or MSWJ, both of which survived to BR days or a GWR outside framed loco such as the Aberdare. Now, moving up a whole level what about a basically standard design from a builder such as Kitsons or Sharp Stewart who built small volumes of locos for the pre grouping constituents - all of which were taken over by the Big Four. Look at MSWJ, Furness, Cambrian, South Wales lines etc. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much Edward - a 2-4-0 would be fantastic, I've done an 0-4-2, so basically the same thing. Thanks for the great suggestion. Something pre-grouping like that would be great - if I can find good drawings, it'd definitely be possible!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Well done!. Looks fine at a distance, and it is all your own. The long rod on each side above the footplate is likely operating the front sand box. Re the reverser, best to look at what the same designer did in their other locos. You could have got more weight by going for a metal chassis, and another help is to let the tender rest on the loco drawbar, so that the rear tender wheels are fixed, but the others lightly sprung to keep them down on the track; the pickup wires could have pressed onto the wheel treads to do the two jobs at once. But a great effort, and as others have said, very honest of you to review and criticise your own work.

I wonder if you might consider printing a few components with a metallic-infill filament. You would get a lot more weight out of certain components, and some of them report being able to be polished to a lovely metallic finish. Depends on what your printer can do, but worth looking into!

This is quite impressive for a scratchbuilt locomotive! Especially the paint job, which made the think this was a mass-produced model when I saw the thumbnail.

Well done Sam, the loco looks excellent and you have all the satisfaction of doing it yourself. For a bit of fun I thought I would convert this into what the cost would be if you were selling this as RTR using the usual rule of thirds. We have to ignore all development costs, but we have to include the time to build and paint it - two hours? at a rate of £15 per hour gives a cost to you of £56.68 (ignoring packaging and other fixed costs for the company which need to be split across product). The price you would sell that to retailers would then be £113.36, which would give an RRP of £170.04.

18:15 you can see the loco "bounce" forward and back which I presume is because of ighter the Rods being 90 degrees out od phase which can't be helped much, unless you add scale counterbalances to the wheel, or the motor/gearing has some slack that can be fixed with proper lubrication. Granted, this is probably only going to be a problem when running light engine, as with any wagons behind it the said wagons will probably work as a "flywheel" of sorts

Overall very impressive. An incentive to other modellers to get thinking. On handrails the 3D printed ones look good on a showcase model, but my locos are exhibition workhorses which lead quite a rough life. I have had to replace too many handrails where plastic handrail knobs haven't stood up to the loco being picked up repeatedly often in an inadequately lit location. For a working loco brass handrail knobs may be coarser (though you could always use N-gauge ones) but are less likely to get broken. But you choose for purpose.

This really turned out great! For the weight issue, try using a low-temperature bismuth-based metal. You can find alloys that melt at around 100°C, meaning that they can be cast within a cavity in the plastic boiler without damaging the plastic.
    Keep up the good work!

Hi Sam. You have every right to be proud of what you have been able to produce, using only 3D printing technology. When viewed up close, yes, the finish does look a little rough, but when viewed running on the track, the finish is nowhere as noticeable. A great effort on your part, and I think maybe Hornby need you on their design team, or quality control team.

    Looks very nice.
Maybe you should look at some of the locos of the Philadelphia colliery, originally the Lambton Hetton and Joicey Railways, later the NCB. There was a right mix, including an ex-Taff Vale O2 (now preserved at the KWVR), a Kerr Stuart Victory, austerity tanks, and several designed specifically for the railway system. All with a rounded cab roof to fit the tunnel to the Lambton staithes on the Wear.

A striking and beautiful, locomotive Sam! I had thought about a place to put more weights on this. When you designed the chassis, was there room in the lower firebox to leave a void? A void that could hold a couple of weights? They would be over the driving wheels which would be a bonus. Anyways, I was waiting anxiously to see the results of this project and you definitely did not disappoint. Thank you for sharing this with us.

great work sam! this is certainly a step forward in your 3d printing venture, and is definitely inspring me to continue my efforts too. a little tip i found, you can sand or file down the print to give it a smoother surface and removes the plastic-y finish, as well as remove any ugly print lines. hopefully with more experience, you'll be able to achieve professional levels of quality.

Absolutely amazing design, painting and assembly work! Have you considered moving too a resin printer? It's a tad more to do after the initial print (theres various videos online of how to properly work with resin printers that at beyond helpful) but the finish is more or less perfect off the build plate! I'd argue theres alot less to do in terms of cleaning a printed piece up with resin printers if anything at all sometimes. One would be Absolutely amazing for those smaller details too

This is extremely good. Even close up most parts are showing virtually no layer lines. Dome shows them a bit, but you could probably have used a resin printer to avoid it there (and for other small parts if they show). Only place it really shows is the under frame which is unlikely to be seen in use without bright lights aimed at.
The paintwork helps a lot. You have done a good job of that, way better than most manage on a standard kit.
So, are you going to have models if the entire fleet?
