  • It's time to take a much closer look at Hyliion Inc - amidst the Hyliion merger buzz there is a lot to be excited about but before investing we have to break this down. Hyliion stock has massive potential when the IPO debuts later this year, but is this a company worth investing in or is this another Nikola story - all flash and no substance?

You know the drill - WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF HYLIION INC?

    • @oophus1
      @oophus1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Its a transition technology, as CNG will be more and more expensive as times goes on due to CO2 taxes. Hydrogen is the end-goal, so its better to jump on that right away instead. IVECO which is the biggest CNG truck manufacturer atm is transitioning into H2 in a JV with Nikola already, so that should kinda show the trend.
You see the same trend within the maritime industry. Since ships often have a lifetime above 30 years, we will see a ton of ships being retrofit to utilize transitional technology to be allowed into harbours with strict rules until a new ship is ordered. Then as new shipts are ordered after that point, then they go fully H2 with CHG, or LHG ir NH3 before the ultimate endgoal is different hybride storage mediums like Sodium Borohybride, or Lithium Hybride powder.
The potential of Lithium Hybride H2 storage medium is tested to be above 4,000% more energy dense than current batteries. Which - is - a - lot.
That said, Hylion will have a good run of around 15 years on the transitional technology, so they have time to adap - which they are planning to do. So its a good bet imo.

I feel Tesla will be the clear leader in the space, they've had some extensive testing, and especially when autopilot & fleets (even with front truck driver) happen. I think Hyliion can do well in its segment with momentum for the transition past diesel / gas. It may come down to covering all scaling costs, and who better manages production efficiencies better this year as to which grows faster. Over the past two years I continually looked at a bunch at emerging and EV companies and always ended up buying only TSLA (haven't sold a single share) Then last week I did pickup some SHLL, just had a good feeling about the company, oddly kind of like what I had the first time I came across Tesla. The only other one I would have invested in, if it was possible, is Rivian.

I have to admit I was extremely skeptical when I first heard about Hyliion, but now I'm pretty excited. This makes a lot more sense than the way Nikola is going about it! I really like the possibility to be net negative on emissions.

a mortal defiant , I’m sure all sorts of new electric trucks will start popping up. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nikola start using Hyliion. If I were driving a rig this expensive, I would want something fully integrated with ota software updates, not a truck made with some parts from here and there, more or less a Frankenstein.

I mean, if you bought the stock for $133 in 1999 you LOST money on it for 10 years straight and you would have done better to put money somewhere else over those 10 years. you would not break even until 2010. I went over this already with a guy on reddit. Amazon didnt gain any value till they be game a global online retailer that made many brick and morter stores obsolete, esp when you didnt need to pay taxes on amazon. it was huge. Before that amazon as a book store was more than useless. No one gave a shit about buying harry potter online. Buying into amazon in 2008-2009 was the correct choice, buying before that was stupid.

Hi Dylan, First of all; this tech - me likey likey, but one little thing I did notice during the video. You spoke of "fleet replacement". Fleet replacement is considered an inherent part of the business model for trucking fleets. In South Africa, where I am, fleet owners like to use a 60:40 mix (new trucks to old trucks) The 60 % hurts in high capital repayment interest, but softens the pain with lower running costs whereas the 40 % is the portion of the fleet that is owned outright (without financing from a third party) and is bringing the income, but is also getting older, and starting to cost more to maintain. Fleet buyers look at running costs and TCO through a variety of lenses, the selection of which may be influenced by the company's history, current fleet mix, operational needs (practical considerations like local vs long distance, on highway vs off highway, and quite a few others). Now, while what I've said here may seem to imply that I am dismissive of your remark regarding "without needing to replace an existing fleet", no, I am not, because fleet buyers do have some discretion, and will enjoy seeing the easy-to-verify numbers of moving towards this kind of retro fit. I think that you have hit the target with this video. Good stuff.

I am SOLD! I've done a lot of research on this company. They are the poster child for the coming energy disruption. They have made it EASY for companies to retrofit their current assets with a product that will save them money NOW! They are like the 'Wal-Mart' of the trucking industry, unlike Tesla and Nikola. The stock price is on the rise due to the pending merger. This is a no brainer investment. I sold my Tesla to invest in this company which provided me with a bigger stake in the company. Thank you for sharing as the world is changing quickly and we must have detailed, non-biased information to help us make educated decisions.

WOW, talk about exciting stuff! This is AWESOME! The fact that carriers can upgrade their existing fleet probably looks pretty good for those without the capitol or faith to make the jump straight to EV trucks. And oh yeah... the trucking industry is HUGE, so there is room for plenty of companies in the market without stepping on each other's toes. I had not heard of Hyliion before - thank you for exposing us to them. Your excitement is infectious and now I want to know more about them. Their technology is so perfect for the current transportation climate as the world transitions to reduced emissions within the industry. This Thomas Healy is a genius! Sorry... As a Retired Engineer with GE I can say from a professional perspective that adding in a bank of Supercapacitors / Ultracapacitors in parallel with the battery pack will significantly increase both the power and the range of this company's Hybrid and Hyper Truck solutions. Though adding in a bank of Supercapacitors / Ultracapacitors to electric cars is a challenge due to the space limitations, the much larger size of truck tractor chassis makes them much more suitable for adding in these power-boosting and range-extending components.

I've read a few comments here where some say they have bought shares of Hyliion. The problem I see is that this is not a publicly traded company(yet!). So I'm assuming they brought Tortoise (SHLL). Once the merger is complete the symbol will change from SHLL to HYLN. If I'm wrong please let me know. I agree with you this is the future of trucking and one that I believe will lead the way in the transportation sector. (Not including Tesla here) I appreciate all you are doing for this channel. Great video, really well put together and explained, thanks. I suppose my question is, over the next 10 to 15 years when ICE production will be significantly reduced and these retro-fitted hyliion trucks are decommissioned, what does hyliion do at that point. I think what they're doing is great, so this is a genuine question about what happens 10 years down the line. EV's will no doubt have made significant efficiency Improvements during that time and possibly put lore pressure on Hyliion at that point. Hope this is making sense as I'm not sure if it's been explained clearly. Thanks.

The very reason they don't make entire trucks is a massive plus to me. If a company can refit their existing fleet with a new powertrain that is actually better performing than a Tesla semi (in terms of range) instead of replacing it's a straight up no brainer.

  • @felix2b5
    @felix2b5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Did everybody catch that , Thomas Healy has a dual degree in mechanical engineering , maybe not a rocket scientist but a very practical approach to
taking existing technology and adding some more innovation and development to come up with a practical solution to give trucks longer range more
power and faster acceleration and the ability to increase the payload which is very important in the trucking industry and with cheaper fuel cost and less
maintainence cost , another feature I like is being able to use the battery pack for downtime like sleeping , no more having to keep the engine running and
another big plus , having no debt going forward for the company , I can imagine Hyliion is going to need to hire a lot of people in the months and years to
follow , I don't think Ark Invest has bought into Hyliion and thats probably because they don't think Hyliion is what they consider disruptive technology , way
to practical. I currently own 226 shares with plans of buying more.

I noticed in the video that they replaced the whole axle assembly. The diesel engines are governed at somewhere below 3000 RPM max, which is much lower than an electric motor likes to run. So the differentials of the new axles are geared to let the electric motor rev much higher. Some enterprising company should figure out how to rebuild the original axles to make them motor friendly. Just an idea...

I don't think Nikola can succeed because H2 is expensive. But Hyliion's business model seems really solid.
    1) cheap $40K retrofit
    2) Huge market to disrupt
    3) Best TCO
    4) low risk of execution
    5) already works in practice - actual units in real-world routes
I think Hyliion and Tesla will disrupt diesel trucks.

I think the only real negative to investing today in SHLL is if the merger doesnt happen shares will go down to 10 bucks. That's the risk with investing in ( SHLL) which if the merger happens then each share of SHLL will turn into a share of hyliion in your brokerage account after the merger. I'm definitely bullish when it comes to hyliion and their management. This company will thrive especially if the merger happens.

Concerned that it still has an engine with all it's moving parts that will still need maintenance. It's an interim solution before cheaper, lighter, faster charging batteries become available. Remember the Tesla will also come with bullet proofish glass and the Nikola truck, invisible as it is, will be able to go through toll stations without being seen.

Yes, Hyllion is just like a Prius. These are bridge technologies until battery tech catches up. So it helps companies that have bought Peterbuilts and can just put out 50,000 and make the truck a hybrid. When the Peterbuilt gets old they will replace it with a Tesla Semi, so unless they make a complete EV truck they wont be around in under 10 years.

A HUGE advantage is that it could carry a full load, which is a deal breaker in many scenarios. (I know Nokila can as well but Hyllion is not a SNL skit)

The Tesla approach to class 8 trucks will prove to be the most cost-effective approach; this means build battery powered only from bottom up. Hybrid is too complex, too much of a hodgepodge, and, too much maintenance. Hydrogen is too expensive. Natural gas can be used to generate electricity at the power plants more efficient and less pollution. Also, be sure you know in detail of the Elizabeth Homes case before you buy into any new startups.

Interesting video. I appreciate that you clearly understand multiple tech solutions for the market and reasons for this.
Also of note: gas (natural gas) is not renewable. It's primarily methane which has known significant leakage and a significant impact on warming, close to that of CO2 produced when burned. It is far cheaper to mine / pump than create from CO2.
If they pursue hydrogen they will need to get the pumping stations cheap and repressurizing faster than an hour per vehicle.

Renewable natural gas might be cheap now, but will it remain that way when an increasing number of trucks start using it? The supply is limited by the number of landfills and such producing it. How do we know truck operators with the Hyliion technology will continue to use the renewable gas regardless of how expensive it becomes? They can easily switch to fossil natural gas at any time and nobody would know.

OK. I still don't much like Hydrogen as a _'clean'_ fuel source. I also don' t like using Natural Gas _(Methane)_ gleaned from petroleum fossil fuels as a source for the Hydrogen. But the honesty of not building trucks, but retrofitting existing ICE powered vehicles to make them _CLEANer_ works for me. The mantra I learned the Summer before I began third grade, forty-five years ago, was Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Finding a cleaner greener smarter use for existing Class 8 trucks fulfills the _'Reuse'_ edict appropriately. So I like it.
It is very helpful also, that Hyliion doesn't go overboard with the rhetoric, decrying the functionality of Battery Electric trucks, as NIKOLA did. And without maintaining an ICE as chose to do as part of the drivetrain. I like that Hyliion admits their HFCEV conversions use batteries, unlike NIKOLA. Batteries are necessary for the operation of HFCEVs. It is very disingenuous to act as if they aren't needed, and all motivation comes from the Hydrogen Fuel Cell stack alone.
