  • Most top bass anglers rank the drop shot as the best all-around smallmouth bass presentation. We caught up with Mark Zona to learn more about power drop shot rigging - his preferred way to cover water and trigger reaction strikes for smallmouth bass.

Zona discusses behavioral differences between largemouth and smallmouth, namely the latter's propensity for roaming in search of forage. Common sense explains why power drop shot rigging usually outproduces traditional 'slow and subtle' rigging; heavier weights let you fish fast while fluke-style plastics resemble a wide-range of forage.
"Z" shares his favorite drop shot bait and sizes, preferred hook and hooking method, and how heavier weights in the 1/2- to 3/4-ounce range let you impart more dramatic bait actions. These tips add up to more bass in your boat.

Oh man that opening dialogue. Every smallmouth fisherman knows the feeling of going to your favorite hole and they’re just flat not there.

I wish we had smallmouth bass in Louisiana!!! I’ve fished them in the northeast and they are fun!! They fight more than a largemouth I find!!

I'm always finesse fishing a drop shot. I'm going to try his more aggressive approach.

Nice video and good tip on the 'power' drop shot. Pound for pound smallie fight like no other fish. Up here in Canada you can't pick them up out of the water, just too much fight. You either lift them in the boat or if they're bigger you gotta net them.

Great amount of information. I thought drop shot was closer to finesse type fishing, I prefer just learning this year. The heavier weight I will try. Thanks for a different perspective

Interestingly, in Nova Scotia, the smallmouth seem to act more like you describe largemouth behaviour. They're generally hanging out under a dock or around logs and will just snap at anything that hits the water near them.

Interesting, thank you for this information. Especially about locating bait to locate fish. How does this behavior apply to rivers with fast current ie 5-10mph+ and deep water 10-20'? Locating and enticing fish in those conditions seems a real challenge some days, even though I know they are there (see follow ups)

Smallies will exhibit Largemouth behavior and patterns, Largemouth will also be in packs too. River bass have different patterns than lake bass of both species and there are no absolutes. Many times, just changing color, size, or lure design, is the key. Also, stealth of you and your gear is a big factor when seeking the HOGS that lurk in odd places.
