Every version of Gladiators has their own Wolf, but they usually seem to miss what made Wolf work - it wasn't JUST about being the bad guy. Wolf could still back up his claims and there were a couple of times when even he could admit he'd been outplayed.
I dunno... the heel trope Gladiator seems to be a UK exclusive thing from my experience other than Australia's Vulcan. The US reboot did have their own Wolf, opting for more of a "wild Wolf" than a "big bad Wolf".

Three episodes in and I’m enjoying it. A few changes are needed though. Games need to be bigger. Viper needs to go. No cringy locker room chat. Wider range of games.

I fully agree. John Anderson would be like "if you don't want to play by the rules, there's the door". He was firm but fair. He's reprimanded contenders before ramming the balls in powerball in Gladiators faces. John Anderson was the law in that arena, this guy is an absolute clown

If Viper was any good at the games his antics would be funny, but because he's the easiest to beat it comes off as a bit pathetic really. Trying to be Wolf, but Wolf could back up his actions while he can't. Went off there with a tap on the shoulder and a missed second hit, free ten points for the contender, while the other contender has to face Giant, really stood no chance. Not got a lot of fitness, but I'd take Viper on if that is how he goes down.
We need more range from viper and for him to actually do well in some events. He's terrible at gauntlet but the current version is harder for the gladiators. Don't mind the theatrics. It's pantomime stuff just like legends segments but it adds character

The original American Gladiators version of Viper was also a mean Gladiator like the UK Gladiators version of Viper but the original AG Viper didn't shove or try to hit the contenders, he acted like a big crybaby every time he loses and the audience holds signs about him needs a diaper.

Legend is proud and boastful, but not mean or angry. Viper is the closest to Wolf in terms of angry spirit, but he needs to speak a little more to add dimension to the character.

If this was in North America, that jump start before the whistle is an instant DQ regardless of fault. Contender jumps first = automatic -10 points (or point total is reduced in half if less than 11 points) Gladiator jumps first =-automatic 10 points

As I remember it, Gladiators used to be a serious competition with some pantomime thrown in, but now it seems to be pantomime with some serious competition thrown in.
If you mean scripted, then yes, at least for now. I think the gladiators are too new in their roles/characters to improvise anything that detracts too drastically from the filming schedule.

Viper is rubbish. I was watching the Gauntlet from the 90's, it was far far tougher than the new one, it was near impossible. Practically everyone has defeated the new gauntlet.
It’s obvious the producers wanted at least one of the modern gladiators to be this generation’s Wolf. If they picked Viper to be this, it’s no wonder. It may be an act, but he is a damn good antagonist!
