They usually break out First Class into the Standard Premium area when there are a lot of First Class tickets booked. They change the head cloth too I believe.

Enjoyable video, I am glad that you finally managed to be served a hot meal.
I was stationed in Edinburgh in the seventies, and used to travel up from London fairly frequently. While modern electric trains may offer a speedier journey, I miss the dining car where you could enjoy a full breakfast, lunch or dinner, cooked on board, no microwave meals in those days.
Unfortunately staffing such a service today would not be economical.

It's a shame really, while there was nothing wrong with the service I received on this trip, it just didn't feel special, and when you could be spending upwards of £140 for a single it doesn't really seem worth it. The menu isn't very good, there's literally not a single meat option, and also theyrr supposed to offer a second meal, as on my outbound at 9:30 from euston - Glasgow they did, rather disappointing. Wish trains still had seperste dining cars but as you said it wouldnt be profitable. While Avanti and lner do have pretty good first class intercity products, I find gwr to be pretty awful. Thanks for the comment

@@danielstripreports - Great Western Railway offers Pullman Dining on two trains a day, each way, between London and Plymouth and one train a day, each way, between London and Swansea. The First Class restaurant car is open to holders of Standard travel tickets if space is available. Which, in my personal experience of the Paddington to Plymouth route, it invariably is.

@@danielstripreports I disagree with you about vegan snd vegetarian options but even the vegetarian and vegan optuons train companies have are fucking shit. Why do companies always think veggies want revolting slaw sandwiches or revolting slaw, coleslaw, and mayyonaise, salad dressings or salad cream yuuuuuuuhk. I prefer hot food. I do NOT like salads in public unles I make the salad myself. I think even the hot food is shit and the portion sizes are shit tje railways are never good value for money. East Coast Trains although the catering was appalling the tickets were good value for money.I blame all right wingers for the cost of everything. I blame all the Jeremy Corbyn haters especially the CUNTS in labour uniforms like I.E TONY BLAIR and KEIR STARMER I wish Jeremy Corbyn were more aggressive and cunning If he wasnt so weak he would be able too be a Prume Minister and fight thess tory bellends making everything in England so expensive. The only thing too do before boarding these overpriced trains is go too the Marks and Spencer and get the NO duck hoisin wrap.

@@danielstripreports I think GWR ESPECIALLY FROM 1996 TOO 2012 WERE THE BEST TRAIN OPERATING COMPANY IN ENGLAND AND IN THE UK. I THINK VIRGIN TRAINS WEST COAST AND VIRGIN TRAINS WEST COAST XC WERE VILE.

@@danielstripreports There is nothing wrong with tje class 800 trains. GWR in December 2012 went down hill but I wish LNER would get rid of those stupid leather headrests on tje chairs. I love the fabric ones though. Leather is made out of dead animal skin. Meat is murder. I love the class 800 trains but the food on GWR is crap although much prefer using GWR too Avanti and Lumo and VIRGIN.

I have been on Avanti West Coast from London Euston to Birmingham New Street. But I haven’t been to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Glasgow Central and Blackpool North on Avanti West Coast.

    Good interesting vid. Well done
In 1983 I took a train from Aberdeen down to London with a girlfriend. It was freezing with no train heating and no hot food onboard either. It was BR days so got nothing in return

Save yourself a few quid by paying the on-train upgrade from Standard to Standard Premium (£30 between London and Glasgow) and buying food and drink at the retail outlets on the station concourse.

Got to say, I went with Avanti last year for my first time in their first class and they just came up to us and was like "we forgot to load up any food so we only have drinks to offer on this service". Their lounge was also meh. Will say I much prefer LNER's first class after this, seems to be more consistant and their food is way better (not that I had any with avanti)

Had that problem a few times with Avanti. One all the way back in June of last year they declassified first class do there was no food. Then again in November where they had a "flood" but as compensation they gave me 3 free returns in first class anywhere in the country, so I could book this trip! So sliver linings I guess?

Not so long ago passengers travelling from Glasgow to London had a genuine choice of operator - either Great North Eastern Railway to King's Cross (via Edinburgh) or Virgin West Coast to Euston (via Carlisle). I went for GNER every time - comfortable seats and ridiculously cheap advance purchase Standard Class tickets which could be upgraded to First Class by the simple expedient of enjoying a silver service lunch or dinner (with wine) in the Restaurant Car. Happy days they were ...

    Nice video
I have travelled on first-class in all TOCs that offer first-class seats
    and in my opinion
Best catering service: TFW (Cardiff Central - Holyhead premium service)
Best seats: Grand Central or LNER's IC225
    Best quality-price ratio: LNER

    • @danielstripreports

Agreed, I would have to say the best overall experience would be with Avanti, however their menu rn looks very poor. Back when they had gnocchi etc it was far better, the lounges and seats are far better than lner. LNER offer the best value fare by far, but Avanti trump's them slightly as they offer hot food on all of their services. Haven't tried tfw yet so cant comment on that. With GWR Crosscountry and EMR I'd say GWR is best because of lounge access and their Pullman services, other than those 5 opersters I wouldn't say first class is worth it in the UK unless you get a very cheap uprgde. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@danielstripreports Avanti right now though 😬😬. EMR and CrossCountry (EMR in particular) used to offer hot food services, but they still use the Covid-19 excuse for lacklustre catering. Shame really. And yes, the Avanti rest of the day menu is very substandard, especially when compared to Virgins

Interesting to see finally what Avanti have been promising us for so long, a first class service again. And I will not be bothering with it. Menu options more limited than the Virgin days before they started cost cutting towards end of the franchise. Yet they’re charging a new higher price tier for it!! Looks like Standard Premium will remain my haunt. Still raging I can pay as much for that as my best old first class railcard fares. Sad truth is I do find myself flying much more now. The value has been ripped out of the train, along with its heart.
