Fixed my aging 8HP 26" MTD today after watching your video. My wife ran over the snow blower with our pick up and bent the axle where the wheel hub meets the frame. Got a part from eBay, watched your video and its back running again. Many thanks. Very easy job.
I just tried starting my Troy Bilt Storm 2410 snowblower and drive system wouldn't engage. I removed the bottom skid plate and I noticed a little metal piece just sitting in there. Turns out it was the drive shaft key. Your video told me what it was and showed me how to fix it. Thank you so much!

Alot of mechanics regardless of the field never openly share knowledge to this extent. Even during apprenticeships you still get ass**les you need to pry info out of. I've gotten a better refresher on small engines on this channel than anywhere else in the last 20 years!

Well done video! My driveshaft JUST broke after 14 years on my Troy-bilt Storm snowblower and this video looks like it will help me feel confident that I can change the driveshaft. My only problem is the snowblower is about 300' from my barn and I have to figure out how to get it to the barn with a broken driveshaft! I had both factory wheel bolts seize in the axels and the heads broke off when removing. Was able to extract one but bought a replacement axle for the other side where I couldn't. Anti-seize on the replacement bolts this time. Thanks for the video.

Don, I agree with Dale. I get a lot from these videos and with 8 gas powered items in my home inventory I have been able to do almost any repair myself. When I retire in a year I may do more fixing for friends and family not just myself.

This video would of came in handy a few years ago when I had to do change my drive shaft. I had one hell of a time removing the old shaft. It was rusted so bad that it welded the gear wheel to the shaft. Thanks for the video.

You are a great help. I am mechanical, but it is nice to see what is in the blowers before I start opening the machine.... Since the gears are metal to metal, could you use black moly grease??? Thanks again?? You make it look easy..

I appreciate your videos although I didn't find what I'm looking for. I went to replace 3 missing shear pins on one side of the auger and discovered a lot of play under one auger blade meaning the auger shaft is broken inside. I was looking for instructions on how to remove one side of the auger assembly. The front one not the inner fly. I'm within 1/2 inch of getting it done but don't quite have the clearance. Was considering drilling a clearance hole offset from the mount but that's not how it was put in there. There must be an easy way
Don, I have a Toro 824 (1984) snowblower, whose right wheel seems hard to turn (push). I just noticed it. ¿Is it an easy fix for this, or will it need a tear down of the drive gears/shaft to check the condition of the bearings, re-lube, etc? The left side seems fine. That's a rare repair, guess the notch created a week point on the axle. Thx for the info
Good vid Don.Has anyone ever tried putting a bellows type boots like is used on rack and pinion tie rod ends on each side of the shaft that the small drive disc slides on? It would prevent corrosion, keep the grease on the shaft and off of the larger friction disc. Just sayin'.
Hello great video! I have a Murray snowblower model 631128x31D and the grade 5 bolt on the drive shaft r/h wheel through shaft bolt keeps breaking. Any ideas why? Thank you sir
Can you tell me if an Ariens Pro 11.5hp 26” cut would have a similar driveshaft? I found one in great shape for sale but the owner claims the “differential” is broken from the driveshaft and her father welded it multiple times but it keeps breaking. Seems to me they are missing the key and/or bolt?! I have not seen it in person yet. Thanks in advance. Great videos!

Hey Dony I have a Troy-Bilt just about the same set up on the drive shaft after it was put together there's a little side to side movement on the shaft is this normal

What purpose do the e clips serve? I have 96 yard machines 10/28, and even though the bushings are in good shape, the whole shaft pops out on one side. I noticed there is a gap between the housing the the metal sleeve thats attached to the wheel....
Danny , I have a Simplicity 1732 pro series model 1695667 something is going bad in my gear box allowing the shaft to move 3/4 of an inch in and out witch it can make my blower belt come off. So my question is it’s very tight in the bottom of the blower I need to get the auger pulley off ,it has to come off first i do believe so I can i can pull the impeller and auger out the front. It doesn’t look like i can separate the blower and the engine with that pulley on the shaft. Everything still works fine but with that much play I will definitely break something in the gear box i think. Have you had any experience with a Simplicity Pro series. Thank you Charlie
Could the shaft be welded? It turns at low speed so would not have to be balanced afterwards.

i have a discontinued model31AH65LG704 it looks like the same driveshaftas the one in this video can u match me up a part number for new shaft
How would that axle break? If those axle bushings are slightly Ovaled, put the Worn area towards the bottom. This will help maintain gear/chain dimension. The weight of the machine wears the topside of the bushing. I always roughen up the surface a bit with Medium Sand paper on Radial lines. OOPS, I didn't realize this was a 5 + year old video.

What's the difference between anti-seize and grease?
Don is that heat stove burning wood or is that a gas stove? You have a nice fire going in your garage and I was wondering if that fire is dangerous with all the combustable fumes you have in the garage?
hey Dony question what would cause oil to turn white .. i just did a tune up on my customers snowblower and the oil was like a white milk color never seen that before maybe you know
The culprit is most likely water . It has gotten in through the carb or gas cap, the oil itself may have had oil in it when filled, it is possible that the machine was it a flood like a buddies of mine's machine was. The oil stunk and was foamy white, change it at least twice. Hopefully the machine wasn't run on this mixture because it's probably gonna need a new rod if the bearing is built in one piece, change it, heat the oil so it flows easily. Run it easy and dump it again. Hopefully, this will be the cheap cure, if not, it's a teardown rebuild .

Great video Don! I have a question that I hope does not sound too stupid. When you have the blower tipped on end so that you have easy access to the repair, does the motor oil flow or pool into places that it should not be, causing problems later?

I've never used that specific one but it should be ok
Does that model not have the free wheel option, as both wheels are locked to axle. How many wheels like that have you cut off the MTD riders?
Never seen a snowblower with a broken driveshaft. Is that common for MTD units?
my snow blower at times won't disingage drive have to pull the spark plug to stop .... what's the problem
I have a mtd snow king snowblower and it isn't driving. what I have noticed is the hex bar that the friction wheel is attached is flexing ( up)which is not holding the friction wheel tight against the drive disc. what would cause this? do you have any videos about this problem? the hex shaft isnt bolted at both ends just only on one side.
what is model number? I have a 92 mtd 312-660 and hex shaft is bolted at both ends and both ends have a bushing. Bolt on one side of mine backed out once , allowing shaft to shift. Or maybe you have worn bushings.
I have a question sir. Won't the anti seize eventually eat up the plastic bushings on the shaft ? Why not use grease ? Thanks for such a great vid. Henry
Do you mean the abrasive nature of neversieze? cuz any petroleum product attacks plastic. You would need to use silicone lube to avoid that, AFAIK.

One question: when you tip the blower like in the video, what about spilling oil?
make sure oil cap is tight, i never have an issue

on my toro 526 the connector rod if that what you call it that connected to the friction wheel help move it side to side when switching gears snapped on me what am asking the correct name for that rod if u need any photos just send me a message so u get a better idea what am saying
That setup looks A LOT simpler than Ariens ST824 which my friend has, that I'm working on changing the wheel bearing. Ariens may have changed their design. It is an older model 924050.
Even with that weak spot, I would not have thought somebody could break that shaft.
If you had to speculate, what would you say caused this axle to fail?

Everything is in place belts are fine, friction disk is fine, cables are fine, both on the drive-shaft is there, wheels are secured.
My wheels have no power but everything is spinning.
Could it be the KEY can be my problem 2:08
What is the proper name of this KEY
I will look and see if this is missing, we spent 4 hours working on the snowblower fixing other issues but this part has me stumped.
I will look tomorrow and see if this is the problem.. What am I missing???

The generic name is "woodruff key". If you scroll down the comments you'll see somebody looked up the MTD name for that specific part for this blower.
It really shouldn't have you "stumped", tho, unless you aren't sharing everything. If you have the pan off, and you can see the gear spinning on the shaft, then the key is likely sheared or missing. But, if you haven't taken the pan off, then there could be another thing going on. Some blowers use a bolt instead of a key there, and they are known to shear off also. Some blowers have fancy differentials in there that can fail.
Until I saw this video, I would never even thought that shaft could break, so there could be something that I wouldn't think of going on there.

some are pretty good now, however I do replace a lot of carbs on them and recoils
