- According to data from Durex in recent years, Thailand was ranked as the #1 country in which cheating on your partner occurs, with greater than 50% of people admitting to having an affair. In this video, I went to ask Thai people if they are surprised by these numbers, and whether they think this is a problem or not.

I have lived here for 4 years and one of the things that shocked me the most is just how often people get cheated on. I see and hear of it all the time. They even have words like mia noi or gig to describe the people they have affairs with. I have a girlfriend and have been told, "It's OK, you can have 2" by Thais asking whether I am interested in someone even after I explain that I already have a girlfriend. I can 100% believe it, it seems pretty normalized.
I guess every language has words such as 'lover' or something like that, don't you think?

The first mistake is thinking she's your "girlfriend".
I have a friend who pre COVID came to Thailand twice a year. I asked him why? Because all he does here is have sex. He tells me he goes on a wellknown dating site, chats up a number of Thai women, then comes her for 10 days and gets laid nightly, sometimes by more than one woman. I live here, but I was still blown away by how -- the women he meets are all married, husbands working out of town, bored, and want a little fun. He takes them to dinner, they show him around Bangkok, Phukhet, Pattaya, wherever, sometimes go to a club, then they go to his hotel, have some fun between the sheets, and she goes home. In most cases, they never talk to him again, which is fine by him. Crazy.

Chai, I caught my Thai ex-girlfriend with another guy just 3 months ago. She thought nothing of it. Even though she cried she got caught. There was no remorse, no apology or regret afterwards.

As a Thai, I confirm that it's true. It's part of our culture that we try to deny.
Yes, my wife is Thai and takes great offense at even the slightest suggestion that Thai's may be promiscuous. Yet all around us in our village both men and women are continually having extramarital affairs. I simply have learned that if you don't talk about them, they're not happeing.

There is another study that showed similar results except I think an African nation took the top spot with Thailand coming in 2nd. I believe the results as well. The idea of men having a "mia noi" is extremely common in Thailand. "Karaoke bars", "massage" parlors, and girls that offer sexual services are EVERYWHERE and cater to Thai men. These are separate to the bars etc that cater towards tourists. Pretty much ALL of their songs are about being cheated on and it is one of the most common themes in Thai tv shows as well.
Anecdotally, while working in Thailand I have had colleagues and customers (in multiple workplaces) openly make continuous advances toward me, despite already being in relationships and some of them even letting me know that they "won't tell anybody". While cheating with someone in the workplace would go on everywhere in the world, there's no way the antics I experienced would be that overt in western countries, and unless I stumbled upon the three loosest workplaces in Bangkok I'm willing to bet that a decent amount of people operate in similar ways in a lot of other places too.
Thai's are also non-confrontational and in my opinion, having a partner both holds more importance in the eyes of the general public and, anecdotally, people appear to have a stronger desire to have a partner and not be single. While you could find similarities in the West, there is a more prevalent emphasis placed on being single and independent as perfectly fine.
The non-confrontational culture and stronger desire for having a partner seems to lead people to cheat rather than have difficult conversations when they feel their needs aren't being met, which could lead to them breaking up and being alone until they find someone new.
I know Thai people like to think that foreigners have "free sex" and to some extent, there's truth in that assessment but I think Thai's end up doing the same thing despite the fact that it is frowned upon culturally. I think the Thai people that weren't surprised by this study have seen the same things that I have.
Having said all that, I love Thailand and there are aspects of life there that I prefer over the western country I was born in. My comment isn't meant as a criticism either, just a personal observation as I find things like this interesting, as they go against traditional norms and seem to get swept under the rug a lot.
I agree. Also, the environment makes it easier to cheat (public display of affection is frowned upon, therefore it is easier to conceal your relationship and side-relationship). And yes, media has watered down the hurt from being cheated on so people might more commonly anticipate it happening to them (and vice versa). The word "kik" is used in a joking way quite often, that could also be a factor?
Is mia noi not more normal for people in the middle class and up, think a mia noi can be expensive for low class people.

@@miketzai9209 I would only be guessing but I would assume that having a mia noi would probably be less likely for people with a low income. Having said that, I do know of a lot of poor young Thai men and women that see other people other than their partner on the side.

I've only ever lived in Tak and Kamphaeng Phet and cheating happens all the time in those places, and they are small towns, so I doubt it.

That was fun ! Good opinion and wise thinking from the guy who wasn't certain about his standpoint. It's important to love oneself fiirst and if another person decides something else that doesn't mean one needs to feel inferior. However it is a tough one. It is what normally happens but reflecting it correctly one will be able to move on further towards a new and hopefully happier relationshipt. 😊👍

I'm Thai. I've been living in a big American city for more than 15 years. I am willing to bet that most downtown American women in this big city will be put into shame if they compete against Thai women in a hoe competition. Cheating is very common in Thailand. Its the truth of one of Thai cultures, that most people try to deny :)

Competition for good Thai men is astronomical, a decent looking guy with a decent job will be targeted. Paddy has lived in Thailand, he has seen that and he should ask those Thai ladies about competition for Thai men.
The reason is/was an income imbalance, as women now get better jobs and their own wealth, many are turning their backs on the vicious competition for men. A few years ago it was far worse, women's income prospects were poor. For many, the only way out was to marry up, that's becoming less the case now.

It's pretty normal for people to cheat here in Thailand, I have lived here 6 years and have not met many Thai people that have been faithful and I live in Rural Thailand 😬

Yes Vietnamese are very conservative culture, dude don't ever think you come to Vietnam to find a girl and fuck girl straightaway, Vietnam is East asian culture, the typical girls are very loyal and most of them are still virgin even though they are in their 30 something, it's very normal thing in Vietnam, most of them are not sluts, they don't sell their body for money and they are not really interest to date the older men, they have the mentality they only have sex with their husbands so they save their first time, because in Vietnam culture if the girl lose virgin before marry, they will get critisize and shame about that,why they tend to save their first time, now young people could be more open about sex but it still very conservative culture but i like that because i know most of them are wife material, they are sluts type of girls like Thais, they have high educated and more smart more beautiful.

This probably also has to do with the fact that many Thai men work abroad for many years and then when you grow apart from your partner at home cheating becomes much more easy

"recent years" do you mean the graph from Durex (2012) which they supposedly surveyed 29000 in 36 countries but there is no raw data to cross-examine with other studies? There are other studies that have vastly different values. These surveys cannot be taken as factual until a more comprehensive study is done where you can actually read about the methods that were employed.

Hey, I have been dating a Thai girl that came to America for a visa. She's been doing shady things and I'm not normally the guy to be worried but we hit it off so fast it felt unreal. I went to her work to find her giving some random guy her number to go to the lighthouse together. She said she could explain and gave me her Instagram passwords and I can't decipher it to well but she has so many guy friends and they send so many emojis it's unreal so used Google translate to find out but it seems like they are speaking in pieces. Can anyone help me decipher the messages to see if she is just a flirt(she says it's custom in her culture) she also wants a visa to get married in USA. That's the only reason I'm looking so hard. USA doesn't need another cheater. I don't think Thailand does either.

I have to admit as much as i love visiting Thailand, i have been cheated on a few times when i had relationships with thai women some had no good morals and are not honest at all it was a huge redflag. Like my other ex i dated in Bangkok a few years ago cheated on me she had a bf all this time before we even met and didn’t even tell me plus she was already pregnant by him and he had the nerve to say she's his wife and told me to stay away from her knowing that he got cheated on too. It was just outrageous but oh well she picked her poison now she a single mom im not taking her ass back. Not all women in Thailand are like that though i met a few decent ones in my life time.

Durex is not the only instituition to ask this question. About three to four years ago I saw another global survey by a research institution. Thailand didn't come first, but it was in the top five. In its poll over 40% of Thai women and over 60% of Thai men questioned said that they had cheated on their partner/spouse. The sadder thing was the study's conclusion, based on golbal data, that these numbers were low due to the fact that respondants, even when guaranteed privacy, were still likely to say no to something that is not good.
Personally, I have a now 6-year relationship with Thailand. Of all the places I know, it blows my mind how many Thais in my village/community have affairs, men and women. Even more disturbing was having a Thai family member, raised in the US from age 14, married to a Polish-American woman, tell me that he married her because: 1. being raised and educated in the US, Thai women look at him like they do Farang, but even more so because he is from the US (has money) and he is Thai (the favoured choice of male partner), and 2., growing up in the US, he gained another set of morals, and after spending all his summers here in Thailand, he didn't want to be married to someone who likely would cheat on him, nor did he want the pressures of cheating on his wife placed on men out to have a little fun.

It depends on what kind of source you get. If Durex got questionares from bar beer girls or people who practice cheating it is a bias. Like....this clip.
For the study, they only polled bar beer girls in Thailand. When they did the questionnaire in Europe, they went to the local convent to ask nuns.
