- I board Celebrity Edge in Sydney, Australia for 11 luxurious days in the Retreat! It is embarkation day as I set sail on Celebrity Edge in Sydney. This is the first season Celebrity Edge is sailing in Australia and I got upgraded to The Retreat. I was fortunate to be upgraded to an Aqua Sky Suite on Celebrity Edge, which gave me access to the Retreat and to the Thermal Suites in the Spa. In this video I board the ship, show you my Aqua Sky Suite, give you a tour of the Retreat Sundeck, walk around Celebrity Edge, and have lunch at Luminae.
Celebrity Edge was sailing an 11-day itinerary to the Great Barrier Reef. On this Celebrity Cruises journey I visit multiple locations in Australia, including Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Willis Island, Brisbane, and Sydney. Celebrity Edge is the fourth oldest cruise ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Celebrity Edge will cruise a summer season in Australia before heading to Alaska to sail later in 2023, before ultimately returning for more Australia cruises.

I disembarked from the 10 night New Zealand the day you got on. 😊 my husband and I were in the Retreat as well, but in a Magic Carpet suite.
The plants were covered for biosecurity. Both NZ and AUS have pretty strict regulations on that. I had to clean my hiking boots with a toothbrush to make sure I could bring them in NZ. Only thing that I thought was weird was there were other spots of the ship where the plants weren't covered. Only guess why those were was that is the largest section of live plants.
Possibly, but if you're worried about some sort of pest infestation, it stands to reason that it's all or nothing....treat ALL plants with the same level of caution. I reckon it's because The Retreat caters to the expensive suites and thus ambiance is more important there than on the rest of the ship. Money always talks louder than anything else.

I really enjoy your videos and can’t wait to see what is coming next. I have noticed that your palate has expanded greatly over the past few years.when I started watching, you were pretty much beef and potatoes. Now you are ordering things I would be a bit hesitant to order. Good for you!

Oh my Gosh, yes, so excited to follow along on Edge and your adventure down under! We sailed her in a Sky Suite for Christmas / New Year's 2022/2023 through the Panama Canal and just loved it! Thanks Zac for all your content - always enjoyable. We're just back from two cruise back to back on Apex in the Caribbean and had a wonderful time. The Retreat was amazing (although there were a few low spots in Luminae (especially at breakfast.) We were in a Sky Suite and our butler introduced himself to us with 30 minutes of being onboard. He explained that he had 20 suites to look after. We saw him regularly and he attended to a couple of issues for us and was always making himself available if we needed anything which was very good - not sure what else we would have used him for. I did overhear one of the concierges speaking of 'premium butlers' for those in higher grade suites and I imagine they did not have 20 suites to look after. We had no complaints at all about our butler service, but it does seem odd that this is not uniform across the fleet. We would not hesitate to return to The Retreat if itinerary and funds merited it.

My first contract working on cruises was for celebrity in NZ and Australia. That docking spot in circular quay is one of the best in the world, (one of the most expensive as well I was told). But waking up in between the opera house and harbour bridge with all of downtown behind. Pretty amazing.

I went on celebrity edge earlier, its second sailing down under. The reason the plants are covered is to keep the pests out of Australia and New Zealand, as you might know both countries have strict bio-security restrictions. That is the reason they are covered.

So excited to watch your series ! Just got off the Edge this morning ( we boarded the cruise after yours ). Also stayed in the retreat! Will be interesting to see your review . Personally this ship and the cruise has to be one of the best I’ve been on . I also booked back in 2021 and got an amazing deal . The OBC was off the charts ! 🤣. Did spa treatments, shopping , excursions and 2 specialty restaurants. Came with premium wifi and premium drinks . First cruise ever that I didn’t have to pay for anything else .

I am so “excited” to watch this video. Hoping to be in Australia next year and maybe even take a cruise. My son, his wife, and my three granddaughters moved to Brisbane last August from Minneapolis, MN. I miss them so much and hope to visit next year. He is on the Quantum of the Seas which sailed out of Brisbane this week. My granddaughters and son are having a blast. I’m looking forward to the retreat on the Reflection for 3 days in October, and while I know it’s not nearly the same as what you are experiencing now really looking forward to the pampering and Luminae.

Best sailaway in the world, I’m lucky for it to be my local port, done it 10 times. I love being able to just get a bus “the city” (that’s what we say instead of “downtown”) and walk the short distance to the ship. You got the ideal weather and sunset, I have had some rainy embarkation days and another delayed for hours by windy conditions.
It really was the best! I loved your city and can’t wait to return someday.

Omg I wonder if we were on the same cruise! We boarded on Apr 5.
For my Alaska cruise last year embarkation in Vancouver was a gong show. Check-in itself was OK but it took close to an hour to get through security and U.S. Customs Pre-Clearance (since the next stop is Alaska). Then I had to wait for another 45 minutes in a holding pen of sorts until they finally let us board. Sounds like Sydney was better, thank goodness.
I was on your ship in Japan while you were on it and now as you got off the Celebrity Edge I was ion the VV Resilient Lady when your cruise ended. We took your spot in the terminal when you left. Small world….. also Sydney is one of the best ports to sail in and out of. So scenic and iconic!

The missus and I were on the Edge from Rome to Dubai this past October/ November. We stayed in a Suite and absolutely loved The Retreat. So much so we are booked on the Edge again in March 2025 for a 10 dayer from Sydney - Tassie , South Oz and Victoria.
When i visited Sydney our hotel was a block away from the harbor and i would see the ships there…so jealous. But i had a great time visiting friends and the Sydney Opera house is a sight to behold in person. I woild not know what to do with a butler, i dont even have my cabin attendant come every day when i am solo😂Thanks for a great video as usual🚢🙂

Great video Zach! I for one like the enthusiasm and excitement. I did the same cruise a few weeks before you and had a great time. Also scored an upgrade to the Retreat although it sounds like you got an even better deal! The outdoor plants were covered due to biosecurity concerns in Australia (and NZ) as I'm sure you heard over the course of the cruise. Bit of a bummer for the ambiance in the Rooftop Garden Grill but it's for a good cause. Looking forward to seeing more videos from your cruise. cheers

Yay!!I am excited for for you! The flight is daunting (I am not the best flyer, don’t want to the girl that panics mid flight 😂). I can tolerate Europe flights - but London is only a 7hour flight for me. One day I will get my courage up.
Welcome to Oz! I live in Melbourne and would always choose to sail out of Sydney if I could - of our three main ports it is by far the most convenient and spectacular.
Just a quick note on your comment about the distance from the US > AUS being intimidating….I have to agree! I’m dying to cruise the Caribbean but the flights/travel time from here to Florida is so immense, there’s not even a direct flight! 😩
I've been enjoying your videos for some time. Like I did this one. One other city is also close to downtown. Amsterdam. Same idea. We were just on Edge in a Sky Suite late this Spring. 12 nights in the Mediterranean. Your video brought back some great memories. I spent a bucket of time on the Retreat sun Deck being spoiled by the wonderful staff. (often in a dangling chair over the pool) Embarkation lunch in Luminae is a necessity for me. The Luminae burger or the lobster roll (double stuffed), but your fish looked incredible. (we loved Basha, our server) BTW, be 'really excited'. I always am. Scandanavia this year on Silhouette, but Australia may be next. A side note: we paid SO much more for our 12 day Sky Suite. I'm a little jealous. Paid about the same amount for a 13 day Scandanavian cruise, but this time in a Celebrity Suite. Sail Away footage was spectacular. I will anxiously look forward to your upcoming videos. We've loved Edge and Apex so much. It's great getting to see it again through your videos.
Plants of any kind aren’t allowed to be brought into Australia so probably why they are covered. Also most ships leave Sydney at 6:45pm as it’s after peak hour for all the ferry commuters. You sometimes get smaller ships leaving at 4pm.
Shucks. I'm going to miss you by a month or so. In April I'm doing the Transpacific to Hawaii out of Sydney. Can't wait for that trip. Hope you had a great trip on the Edge.

Borscht is a beet soup and depending on where in Eastern Europe they are channeling it can be different. My mom and dad loved the "creamed borscht" from Poland. I can't say off hand where they were from but that was back in WWI times so the borders are not what they are now. I don't do solo cruising but I do appreciate your take on solo. Give me a good idea for if you are cruising with others.

Can't believe you were in Sydney! It's pretty nice and so handy having the cruise terminal just there in the quay.
I plan to try the move-up for my cruise on the Beyond in November with my daughter. I tried on the Ascent last year, but not successful. Hopefully this time.

@richardholmes9424 No we didn’t actually. I had this cruise booked for three years and no way to cancel so late before sail date. They’re still price gouging solo cruisers so I’m not booking anything new with them. I think I still prefer Celebrity over Virgin but will definitely see how I feel when I sail Virgin again.
Zach the covering of all the plants would be to do with our biosecurity laws here in Australia this is to minimise the spread of unwanted pests around our country or from other countries
Wow! So glad you're happy/excited with your cabin and hopefuly cruise! We thought with ships at full capacity that Move-up wasn't likely, but... Good for you! Is the ship full? Do you mind us asking (approximately) where you were on the Move-up offer "meter"? We've got 43 future nights booked with Celebrity (Elite Plus almost within reach) over 4 cruises (3 are Aquaclass, 2 are Edge-class, 2 are Transatlantics), so maybe we should try Move-up... Just some information for ypu was build to accomodate the Oriana and Canberra the largest ships in the world ( ocran liners ) they did the Uk run to Australia they were different times i have sailed many times grom that terminal.

My wife and I were supposed to be on this cruise. 10 days before we were supposed to leave, 2 big dogs slammed into me at the dog park. They broke my ankle/tib/fib. I had surgery and had to cancel. We had an AFT sunset sky suite. I had just bid on a move up offer 2 weeks before. Celebrity kept all my $$$, I do have insurance so thats 1 good thing. I kept trying to find the "reason" this happened. We had 3 different snorkeling tours booked and I know Celebrity cancelled 1 and the weather on another wasn't good. We decided when we can go to Australia, we'll do it on our own.

Plants = The covers are Shade cloth its to protect the plants from sunburn or radiant heat.

Wow,....I am going on the same cruise in Oct/Nov. I booked the solo cabin and it was $4500 with no perks. This was booked in 2022. I did downgrade to oceanview for $2200. I thought I can spend the extra $2000 on other things. I am taking the honolul to Sydney for 45 days or 4 B2B. Initially all was booked in a solo cabin. The New Zealand leg could only be book all included so I never saw anything close to that. Have fun...wish I had gotten those priices, however my health was not good in 2021 and I didn't realize how easy it was to cruise solo until 2022.

What did you do in Sydney for those two days? Any sight seeing or just recovering from the flight?
I did quite a bit of sightseeing and even got to see Taylor Swift's concert the night before the cruise! A great time in Sydney.
So is the plan to have butlers in the sky suites again? Are they slowly bringing them back?
.... and you didn't take any pictures of Resilient Lady as it was passing ?? Sydneysider here - and it was a great sunny day when both ships where in the harbour. Captured a few good pics of Edge from the tenders that were used. And you did this cruise alone ??? (you need to find someone else that enjoys cruising !! )
I think you're referring to the day I got off of the Edge. We didn't sail past Resilient Lady when leaving on our cruise at the end of February.
@@ZachtheTravelingMan no probs - Edge and Resilient Lady were both in Sydney Harbour on the 7th March - I was on Lady, had a great view of Edge departing and sailing out.
Zach, love your videos. I was told that if you get a Retreat class suite thru the move up program that you didn’t have access to the retreat amenities…just the room itself….is that not the case?
It would be Aussie customs making them net off the live plants, as you aren't allowed to bring live vegetation into Australia because of insects, weeds etc. Edited - that view is my daily walk view, it's an amazing city.

You stay excited and happy about travelling especially in our wonderful country Australia. Ive done 9 cruises and heading for my 10th and I still get excited about them. To that grumble bum who said that , Stop being so damn grumpy. Its a time to be happy after all we;ve all been through with Covid. LETS ENJOY OUR LIVES PEOPLE, LETS LIVE! :)

Burning question: Why are the plants on the Retreat side (bow of the ship) left uncovered while the same plants on the Roof Top Garden are fully covered (for bio-security, I presume) for this very same cruise? Make absolutely no sense to cover only some areas with plants if bio-security is the concern.
