    Luckily you still have your sarcasm Jon, I do hope answers are going to rise to the surface now. I could only imagine the frustration when you modded my 1030XE , seeing this video make me realize even more how it must be on your end.
    Excellent job on the machine as usual and ¨Part 1 these connectors are like the toilet paper of the Atari¨ had me falling off my chair :D

    The frustration.. I've been meaning to buy a Rapidus for my XEL, thinking that there would be no issues, I've even built another CF -3 interface based on EBIGUYS design so as not to interfear with the Rapidus. Your mention of the Reset issues remaining with the XEL has kind of put me off.
    I guess the same for the XLD, which I've also built, have you tried the XLD with Rapidus ? I know you did have one to build up as I've watched your video's for some time now. By the way I love the new video productions.
    Keep it up

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah: your concerns are understandable, but we already have one comment here asserting that the reset issue doesn't exist on a particular 65XE. Your mileage may vary, but I can only represent things as I find them here. I don't want to discourage people from purchasing Rapidus (although this irrational accusation was levelled at me at first after Lotharek kindly sent me my Rapidus free of charge in acknowledgement of my firmware work); it's a nice device and clearly a lot of work went into its development. If Lotharek sells Rapidus and the customers are happy, I'm happy for both parties. But for some reason the issue discussed in the video plagues every U1MB machine in which I install Rapidus, including the 1088XEL. I make videos of stuff people ask me to install in their Ataris, and the result is an honest representation of the outcome. As for the XLD: sadly, I haven't completed mine yet (apologies to mytek!), so I cannot speculate on how Rapidus would behave in that machine. Thanks for the kind feedback!

    I'm glad I have a 1200xl that needs work on the sio(+5v & +12v) and on the svideo for chroma, plus the rf needs to become a dvi port and be otherwise the same upgrade in your video. No cartridge port is in the way of those ribbon cables on a 1200xl and probably on a 130xe and probably on a 65xe. I only have a 1200xl, I wish I hadn't sold off the 1400xl as it had a pbi bus and fit in a 1200xl case and used a 1200xl psu and keyboard. The boards look like they weren't designed with each other in mind and to keep any ribbon cables as short as possible, but that is my guess.

    I apologize if this is a silly question; however, over the years, why hasn’t someone developed a combined Rapidus/U1MB solution on a single PCB? From what I gather from the comments in this video, these technologies are several years old...

    My first computer was an Atari 800 before we went to C64 and Amigas. I was looking to pick up an Atari 800XL myself since it has more RAM than an 800. This is the first time I've seen anything about custom add-ons for any Atari system.
    What can you do with these add-ons? It looked like all of the menus were different so doesn't cease to be an 800XL at that point? I'm not saying it's bad. Just kinda curious.

    • @flashjazzcat

      There is quite a healthy upgrade scene for the 8-bit Ataris, and U1MB and SIDE2 are two of the more popular devices (I made several videos covering SIDE2 which you might want to check out). U1MB provides 320, 576, and 1088K RAM upgrades, plus everything mentioned here: atari8.co.uk/firmware/ultimate-1mb/. SIDE2 provides a Compact Flash based HDD and everything mentioned here: atari8.co.uk/firmware/side/. These two don't dramatically change the 'character' of the machine; they just coalesce a lot of functionality from disparate devices and generally improve on it. You could argue that things like VBXE and Rapidus fundamentally change the character of the machine, on the other hand. Sophia DVI doesn't: it simply offers vastly superior video quality.

    I like these videos. I was thinking of getting all those items for my Atari but it sounds like Rapidus is c*rap, so I won't be getting it any time soon. I will still get the U1MB and the Sophia. Thanks!

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rapidus is a pretty cool device and was in development for fourteen years (so, quite some pedigree). I see no obvious problems when running it without U1MB, and the 800XL in which I installed U1MB/Rapidus in 2017 _kind_ of worked, so your mileage may vary. Of course I can recommend U1MB and Sophia without hesitation; Phi2 issues with Sophia discussed in a prior video were swiftly and efficiently addressed by the developer. Normally, however, things simply work perfectly out of the box with both upgrades.

  • @slaapliedje
    @slaapliedje 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think maybe it's me that you are referring to from 2017. I just tested hitting the reset like 10 times in both Rapidus mode and Classic mode, and it worked correctly (as in not a cold reset. In fact if I loaded BASIC for either, and hit the reset, it would just take me to the READY screen.) I haven't updated to the latest firmware for the U1MB yet, so the PBI bios is still 3.00 dev. 2

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to hear, although I wasn't referring to you regarding the lack of feedback (unless you simply mean you are the owner of the machine I worked on). It seems your machine is working correctly, which is wonderful news. The U1MB firmware is not responsible for the problems I have observed, so has no bearing on the situation (Dev. 2 is the PBI device ID you have assigned the PBI BIOS, BTW; not part of the firmware revision number). Thanks for the info!

    please excuse my ignorance, but what is the reason for soldering all the pins before using the de-solder tool ?

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm adding 60/40 leaded solder, which has a lower melting temperature than the lead-free stuff on the board. This just helps get things moving more easily when using the desoldering tool.

    can a mod like this be applied to an Atari 800XL that already has the old 256k RAMBO XL mod in it? It's not like I can revert back to 64k since I do not have the old RAM chips anymore. It's been like 30 years.

      @@flashjazzcat i have a suggestion for troubleshooting.. It may or may not be feasible for you...
      Set up a series of good 8XL mobos, each with a different upgrade or combination of upgrades.. Like 1 with ultimate and 1 with rapidus and so on. But do the layouts in ways that you would if they were all installed in the same system. Like use the left-rear ultimate location that forces the longer ribbons, etc.

    • @flashjazzcat
      @flashjazzcat  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MessalineApghar Good idea on the face of it. I've installed Rapidus in the following machines (all with U1MB): 1200XL, 130XE, 800XL and 1088XEL. Same problem on all of them. I installed Rapidus on an XE without U1MB, and I don't recall the problem existing there (although there was no SDX ROM, of course; I don't recall if SDX on SIDE had the same issue). The 1088XEL needs no ribbon cables at all, has a four-layer board with GND and power planes, and... exact same issue.
