More solar production to charge our 44kWh battery. I really need it! 🌦️🌦️🌦️

  • Since we have finalised the Battery2.0, I'm having trouble charging the 44kWh beast with my tiny solar array. I was talking about the solar upgrade for a while and recently picked up a used 3kW solar system ( • S.P.A.T.-Testing used ... ).
    As we are now in the cooler season, it's time to climb on top of the roof again and start upgrading our solar. This is again true DIY work with a lot of modifications needed.

Probably a good solution in your case, but isn't it a good idea to try using panel optimizers, especially with so many tree shades? • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure if this is necessary. The rails and panels are grounded with 4mm cable to the earth bar inside the garage. I was just thinking, the metal links would be a far better grounding method (as an addition) as the just the cables. I will probably replace the ones at the front and end of each rail as they are easy to reach.

  • @retrozmachine1189
    @retrozmachine1189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To anyone considering adding mount extensions like Andy has, please consider your wind load where ever you are in the world. The extension introduces a fair amount of leverage against the roofing screws. Strong winds can and will wiggle and jiggle things until metal fatigue takes its toll. For Andy in particular, 4+ hours of 150km/h winds as a cyclone blows through is a real possibility now with the progress of global warming. Cyclones, out at sea, are already making it down to Sydney latitudes.

    • @cods41
      @cods41 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100%. Also be aware that you normally need to leave 2h (h is height of panels) gap between the edge of the panels and edge (or ridge) of the roof. So in Andy's case where panels are 150-200mm above roof. He should leave a 300-400mm gap from all edges of the roof

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, is this the installation rule for QLD? I could fit only a fraction of the panels on the roof then...

    • @cods41
      @cods41 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia that's the requirements based on the Clenergy installation manual and engineering certificate. I believe QLD requirements would say that you need to use an engineered panel racking solution (I.e comply with the Clenergy install manual and calculations).
      I'm based in NZ and we use most of the same standards as Aus.
      I've also used clenergy racking for my system, so I went through the manual in detail.

      Andy is currently likely in cyclone rating B where he is, but this is expected to move to rating C at some point due to global warming. Whilst his mounts are correctly screwed down to the roofing and the panels are correctly attached to the rails, those extensions are the problem. Being home made, and in at least half of them not even using a suitable material, they have no wind rating at all. If Andy were to contact the manufacturer of the roof mount and rails and explain what he's done they'd want no part of it. It's all on his shed, not his house, so that is a saving point. If the roof on his shed is damaged by the actions of the panels in a storm, insurance relating to storm damage on the shed is void. If a panel breaks loose during a storm and smashes into his house, well that would be an interesting discussion at the claims desk. Yes. I do know what I'm talking about. I spent 15 years in the insurance industry doing behind the scenes technical work and the things the assessors and claims staff would talk about ...
