      A great singer (not necessarily a great vocalist who is an expert in the many techniques and skills of singing) to me is a singer when singing about making love feels like you want to make love (George Benson's "Feels Like Making Love") and when singing about revolution makes you want to overthrow the government (John Lennon's "Revolution") and when singing about Jesus makes you wanna worship Jesus even if you are not a Christian (David Phelps' "O Holy Night") and when singing about demanding respect makes you want to get respect (Aretha Franklin's "Respect") and finally a great singer is when they sing in a foreign language that you totally do not understand about a weird odd dance makes you feel like doing that silly dance (Psy's "Gangnam Style"). I think the point has been pushed across that a great singer makes you feel and experience what the words that are being sung to the point that it moves you.....and in the case of "Gangnam Style' literally makes you move.

    Celine may not be the cup of tea for everybody but excluding her from the List is an insult. Not only is she one of the best vocalists of all time, she sold more than 330 million records, has 2 Oscars, 43 Nr Singles worldwide, grossed over 1,5 billion in touring and inspired a whole generation. Adele loves her, Ariana admires her, Pink wrote a song for her, Beyoncé said she has the most beautiful voice in the world, Cher said Céline is the best in the business, Kelly Clarkson said she is probably the most gifted vocalist in the world and the list goes on and on.
    To claim she has not enough legacy for that list is just UNREAL!

      I guess there is nobody in the world who is everyone‘s cup of tea. So, I still don‘t get it even by saying that Celine may not be everyone‘s cup of tea, because this can be said about everybody. I agree with you that it is an insult to leave Celine out of the top 200(!!!). In my opinion she belongs at least in the TOP 5-10. Rolling Stone can‘t be taken seriously any longer, so sorry. They are leaving out many others who should also be in the TOP 200 without any doubt like Pink, Jennifer Hudson etc. However, I was a never a fan of making such lists and competitons anyway because too many factors are subjective as the Lady of this vid mentions it correctly. My list, for example, would look much differently ;) My number one of all time is Whitney, number two is JHud (and I know many would shake their head now but I don‘t care lol), I would put many others into the TOP 10, i.e. Freddie of course, Glennis Grace from The Netherlands, Cynthia Erivo(!) and and and ;)

    Rolling Stone really dropped the ball on this list, just as they did on their previous top 200 list from 12 years ago. Agree that it should be titled "Rolling Stone's List of Favorite Singers" as their opinions seem to counter what the general public views as great singers.

    Elvis then everyone else. 95% of the artists in this list are sty in their lane singers. Elvis pushed the boundaries in all genres of music. In terms of pure vocal talent and versatility, Elvis is a no-brainer No.1 The fact that Elvis's live performances always sounded better than his recordings is a testament to his talent. @dennisaber8011 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonytaylor7928 You sir, are a joke. Watch the video Elvis and the Black community to see what his black contemporaries thought of The King. This notion that Elvis stole black music is pure horseshit. He always gave credit to black artists and expressed his admiration of them. But he went far beyond Rock and Roll. His first single in the summer of 1954, which was a full year before Chuck Berry and Little Richard's first hit singles, was That's All Right Mama which was an original black artist's song. But the B side of the single was Blue Moon of Kentucky which was a Bluegrass song. So from the very start Elvis sang all kinds of music. And yes, without a doubt Elvis sounded better live. The fact he didn't need studio tricks to make him sound better shows how great his voice is. I'll just leave you with a quote from the great Chuck Berry, "Elvis, he is the best there is, the best that ever was or ever will be." I think I'll take Chuck's, James Brown's, B.B.Kings, Muhammad Ali's or Sammy Davis' opinion of Elvis over yours. And if you don't believe me, look it up.

    Your introductory remarks suggests to me a view that technical ability is the dominate attribute of any great singer. You do give consideration that performers can distinguish themselves along difficult to compare dimensions. But, there is still a strong emphasis on technical abilities. Following that emphasis, the greatest singer of all time (GOAT) that we have any audio record of would be Dimash. Everybody else can just sit down. No one even comes close. Yet, Dimash is not my cup of tea, as much as I admire and respect his talents. Almost always when I see a vocal coach react to a Dimash performance, they are mesmerized by his vocal pyrotechnics. Those soaring vocals are indeed spectacular. Take his performance of S.O.S. (with the rest of the French title). That is a good example because the song is a story of despair: a man contemplating taking his own life. Yet the audience with rare exception is carried away with Dimash's vocal gymnastics and seems to feel none of that despair. Does this make for an effective interpretation? I don't think so. You hit on the idea of emotion. Music, when it works, engenders an emotional reaction in the listener. Vocal music or instrumental music, it's all the same. More specifically, music communicates an emotion. That is the emotion that is written into the specific piece of music. It is the performer's job is to convey that specific sentiment to the audience. Dimash's S.O.S. doesn't do that. Instead, Dimash makes a technical showpiece of the work. Coming back full circle to the theme of technique, it should be recognized that technique is a means to an end. It is three or four levels below the performance level and should also be in service to the piece being performed. Great singing goes well beyond great technique. To finish off, how would Dimash come out singing classics from the, so called, Great American Song Book? A piece like "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" by Ella fitzgerald, or any hit song by Frank Sinatra. I think Dimash would come out fairly ordinary, or he would destroy such pieces with gratuitous ornamentation. And as a postscript, story telling can be just as compelling as vocal pyrotechnics. In that regard, where is Hank Williams on that list?

    • @philharris5848
      @philharris5848 ปีที่แล้ว

      So many people say that Dimash is all technique etc. But if you watch his latest concert Stranger Almaty and the song 'If I Never Breathe Again.' There are No high notes or vocal acrobatics yet the emotion he brings to his performance brings many of the audience to tears. One top professional voice teacher said, 'In my entire career Dimash is the only singer that I've ever heard that has Everything.' Not everyone has the same favourite singers, but we should always respect other peoples tastes in music.

      Morissette is a great singer, but of course any list of the greatest singers of all time (especially one published by the Rolling Stones) would only include singers who have achieved worldwide success, a long career, and undeniable legacy. Some of the singers on the list aren't nearly as strong vocally as Morissette is, but are way more successful and mainstream. For instance, Taylor Swift isn't the best vocalist, but she has a very pleasant and immediately identifiable voice that perfectly suits the type of music she writes. Michael Jackson is considered the best performer of all time and he also happens to have great vocals. I personally think Morissette is better vocally (she can do more with her voice), but most lists would favor MJ over Morissette (if she even appears) because his voice is so distinctive and iconically him. If this list was unbiased (pretty impossible to be 100% unbiased) and focused on only vocal ability (and not record sales and iconic status), then a lot of the lesser known singers would appear on the top 50 for sure, like Morissette over the more popular singers. Like Nina mentioned, it would be nice to see a list for different categories rather than one list ranking all singers. But ultimately, any list is going to incite controversy because not everyone will agree, which is normal.

      @@jhoshie5440 Not including Celine is definitely a major oversight. She should've been placed somewhere in the top 10 for sure, maybe even top 5, but is it that serious?? Fans protesting with signs outside of the Rolling Stone NYC office over her absence on the list is so dumb and trivial. At the end of the day, this is just some arbitrary list of talented singers and no one should give it that much credence anyways.
      Rolling Stone has gotten a lot of things wrong when it comes to their rankings and critiques. They're also known to be biased and favorable towards rock artists from older eras. So why so many people are losing their minds over a list made by a media company known to come out with controversial and unpopular takes is beyond me... Ultimately, what matters the most is public opinion and most people seem to think Celine is one of the greatest singers of all time, and that's infinitely more powerful than some list that snubbed her.

  • @cttwii
    @cttwii ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you’ve raised some absolutely valid points. And i also wonder if they simply left her off for publicity. If Mariah and Whitney were top 5, Celine should also be top 5. They are on the same level. I dont even think Patti la belle was on it. Or Madonna which counters their entire argument about it not being about voices… but singing… if its about that then Madonna should be top 20 at least with what shes done for music. Its mental. But there has been a lot of backlash because who are they to be the guardians of such lists… with this list they have inadvertently rendered themselves irrelevant.

    Hello Nina big fan here ! It’s interesting how you began your video with the criteria for greatest singers of all time. Your criteria is the same as mine and I agree with you that songwriters and artists have been conflated with pure vocal talent. I think what makes me dubious about these lists is how much does international success weigh in ? In other words a singer like Mylie Cyrus has incredible SUCCESS in the industry yet can barely carry a legitimate tune. By the criteria you mentioned at the onset of your video Morissette Amon is the greatest pure singer in the world today and I’d argue should be mentioned with Celine and Whitney and a few others as the greatest pure vocals I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately Mori is unknown by 99% of the people pontificating over the list and it seems that FAME not talent rules the day. You ,however , do know of Morissette and that’s how I know you as a consequence. My simple question to you is if you made a list of this sort yourself where would a one of one talent like Mori rank? PS. The fact Celine is not on the list UTTERLY delegitimizes this list along with a few other dubious choices.

    Totally agree with everything you said, with one caveat. Just because Paul McCartney is a fantastic songwriter doesn't mean that he can't be an incredible singer as well. For me he's in my top 10 or maybe my top 20. I think he got better and better as he went, but he was exceptional even when he was quite young. And to distinguish songwriting from singing, just listen to any of the many early covers that they did. Most notably for me, the cover of the Little Richard song Long Tall sally. McCartney just wails on this!
    And I agree with your comments about lists and especially ranking. Any more I refuse to rank anything ever. To me it just indicates that if you want to rank stuff in some concrete way, it means you don't have the ability to distinguish the apples and oranges aspect of various singers, or bands, or songs, or whatever. It's all the same. If they're good at all, they're going to be good in their own way.
    And I didn't check to see if Chris Cornell is on this list but if not it's a sin. For me he's in my top 10. Especially if you listen to his later acoustic stuff, where it's just him and his guitar or sometimes a small ensemble. That guy had the range and the best control and the grit and the character and the phrasing and the sensitivity and the emotion and he just knows how to blow you away.
    And I wouldn't put them near the top, but I would absolutely include Elvis Presley in a top 200 list. For me he's probably in my top 25 or maybe even my top 20. Especially if you listen to his later stuff where he becomes almost operatic.

    Such a list is fraught with complications, and I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head, that if you intend to make a list of the top 200 singers of all time, it should be based on the metrics you described, and not their popularity, musicianship or songwriting skills. This list would have to be reworked from that perspective, and then it would be far better, however it would still be fraught with subjectivity (I find it hard to believe Jim Morrison is out, for example, as his voice in the Doors is truly iconic, but maybe he lacks some of the straight up singer metrics you mentioned, so this is simply a subjective thing for me - but then you have Kurt Cobain, who I am pretty sure did nothing he should have as a singer, by proper standards - it gets messy). Probably, a list like this would have to be made from the metrics you describe, as a basic template of what to consider, and then compile the choices from at least 5-10 curators, so some averaging on who various people think should be on the list and where happens, so that the averaging removes at least some of the subjectivity. I probably have overthought this a bit haha. Truly a subjective opinion, but any list like this had best include Floor Jansen, because I have never heard anyone do with their voice all the things she does, with that much skill and agility, as well as singers from all over the world and not just a western bias.
    As an aside, I suggest a reaction to LiSA on one of her First Takes, someday. She's amazing and would probably make my list. Also, a request for Lovebites. Anything live, but I think for you, Frozen Serenade or Swan Song (with the Chopin intro) is best, as there are piano parts (and they are masterful). Asami's voice is quite a thing too, but I don't know how to describe her. Curious what you might say about her voice, as well as LiSA.

    The problem is, non-musician music fans usually assume what they think is sounding good actually IS good. Which is never, or rarely, linked. I, as a musician, openly admit that I LOVE some music that is technical really simple and also hate some bands who play extremely difficult stuff. The key is to disconnect your personal taste from the thoughts about being "technical great". But I fear that's an argument that will never stop.
    A typical conversation:

    Don't take it too seriously. RS did it intentionally to get more people to come to their irrelevant publication. Best way to protest it just unsubscribe and stop buying that crap magazine.

    Was Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole on that list? Pink? Not having Celine on it makes it not credible IMO anyway.

    On your point that RS probably going for the singer-songwriter argument... Their Top 2 literally never wrote their own songs (except for a handful that their fans would point out). But they are generally not known for their songwriting skills, rather they are known for their "voice" which again would contradict RS argument that they are not focusing on the "voice." As to the criteria they had set i.e. breadth of catalog, influence, legacy.... damn, Celine Dion ticks all those boxes! The interns who made the list obviously were not aware of Celine's French catalog.... her French music has been culturally and musically impactful in French and French-Canadian culture.... I wouldn't be surprised if her French career is being taught in university in French schools. But then again, the US doesn't care about other cultures, other countries. The list is US-centric and desperate to be branded as "cool." Instead of aiming for coolness, why not try "relevance." As Pink had just said, RS hasn't been relevant since the 90s.

    How is Freddie not in the top 5?
    You're so right. These lists are so wrong!
    Where is Ian Gillian, George Michael, John Farnham, Anna from Abba , Barry Gibb, Andrea Bocelli🤔
    And they didn't dig into non-american artists very deeply. What about singers from other countries like India, Australia, Portugal, etc.
    For example: I'm Australian so if I made a list of best singers I would include John Farnham, Oliver Newton-John, Bon Scott, Sia, Jimmy Barnes, Guy Sebastian, Vanessa Amorosi...because these are just a few great singers / vocalists from Australia. And I'm sure everyone has a list like this for their own countries.
    There is no way that anyone could say that Billie Eilish is a better singer than John Farnham & I really like Billie Eilish.
