      Because the package was specifically designed for "exciting restarts" to distract from the terrible racing product and that's it. Nothing happens outside of it. That is the only reason Custer has a win in cup and the reason why Blaney won Michigan last year.

    I think 2021 was better because there was less 550HP tracks than the previous 2 years. You had more Road Courses, Bristol Dirt, where the package doesn't matter that much. Also, a few of 550 tracks had pretty solid races this year. Michigan had its best race I've seen in a few years, and Homestead, but to be fair Homestead has been good for a long time now.

    Engine failures are a part of racing and it should remain a part of racing. The sport is an engineering feat and getting the cars to run at optimum conditions for the duration of these long races is what makes racing interesting. If a team wants to run their engines to certain lengthy distances and it blows up, they made the decision. If a team wants to shave tenths of an inch off of some engine assembly because it nets them some hp at a cost of durability, let them. It is a team sport, and a sport of competitive advantage, creating an artificial handicap is not what the fans want to see. However, the racing last year was better than 2017 or 2018 (Because cars couldn't race side by side without completely wrecking), though, it is not a good solution for that main problem of the time. In 2014, the cars were fast, but they tanked in dirty air because they had a bunch of downforce with the massive rear spoiler and being heavily taped to the ground, also side skirt effects (increasing side force and width of dirty air). Like every problem, there is a solution. However, not all solutions reduce the problems and/or keep fan satisfaction up. The Next Gen at least has fixed some of the problems of Gen-6, though its created a few more, and I wish I could open a comments section about the car, regularly, where fans weren't complaining about the numbers, diffusor, or wheels because it abandons tradition.

    • @thejusmar
      @thejusmar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The solution to the cost of durability would be a cap on the # of engines per season opens up all sorts of channels for abuse(look at Mercedes in F1). If you've got a super loaded team what's keeping them from running engines that blow up at mile 501 of 500 every single week? But then again that's an artificial handicap.

    • @jacobbradley1197
      @jacobbradley1197 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@thejusmar I think there is some room for error with artificial handicaps, more error than maybe my initial response made clear. NASCAR currently is deep into artificial handicaps. What you proposed would be a good compromise to balance the playing field. Far better than significantly reducing the hp in order to preserve engines. It adds another factor that the teams must consider and puts the responsibility back in the teams hands.

      @@thejusmar as an F1 fan primarily, not a Mercedes fan but failure is part of racing since it started. For decades they were going through multiple engines, sometimes one each race. With nascars roots I truly don’t understand why everything has to be “more fair” and slower. I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to give everyone a trophy in the next few years. Their governing body has taken a pretty awesome machine race and turned it into kid glove central. It’s ridiculous what it’s become.

      When was it ever safe? The cars are better built now than they were 20 years ago. Really no good reason they can't go faster now, aside from cars getting airborne. That will always be a byproduct of racing at speeds in excess of that which would cause one of them to get airborne. As far as making the cars easier to drive, the way I see it, they are very well compensated to do something that the majority of fans will never get to do, so I could care less how hard their cars are to drive. They dry their eyes with hundred dollar bills.

    if the cars are built to stay perfectly planted on the pavement and the drivetrains are so lightly stressed that they never fail, then its just gonna be a merry-go-round. nobody ever ever makes a mistake that loses them ground, and nobody can take any risks to gain ground.

    I think you nailed it in your closing statement. 2021 brought a lot more variety to the season track lineup which was really enjoyable. Eliminating having to slug through 2 visits to every shitty 1.5mile track, making up nearly half the season. More road courses, dirt tracks, short tracks, and just the extra variety in general made the season much more enjoyable. They cut down massively on the number of 1.5mile races we had to sit through.

  • @combatking20
    @combatking20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Here is the reason not mentioned in the video, Chevy, Ford and Toyota went to NASCAR and told them to either lower the HP or they were going to leave NASCAR. Why? Simple... engines are expensive. Tearing down and rebuilding nearly 1000HP engines after every race gets expensive. It all comes down to expense, which let us be honest with ourselves, teams can't help but spend themselves into a hole they can't crawl out of. That isn't NASCAR's fault... that is on the teams.

    • @infernal_mtndew2943
      @infernal_mtndew2943 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is.. you can lower the horspower, and not kill speeds and throttle response like they did. They could have lowered the horespower and NOT made that 550 high downforce package they did. If 550 was for the manufacturers... like they said... then why are are going back to 670? And why run 750 at more than half the schedule? And then they SAID 670 was within the range for manufacturers. They may have lowered horsepower for manufacturers, but they created that awful 550 package because they wanted pack racing.

    • @combatking20
      @combatking20 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@infernal_mtndew2943 NASCAR lowered it to 750 for the manufacturers, 550hp was for pack racing, anybody could see that. NASCAR wanted to use 2 packages for smaller and bigger tracks in 2019 originally but the teams bitched about cost, so we got the 'one size fits all' package that year.
      Engines are one of the biggest expenses teams and manufacturers face. You have to make them last. Hell, Chevy, Ford, and Toyota weren't fans of NASCAR increasing HP. The teams weren't either. But they can just deal with it.

    I've had a huge gripe with NASCAR over their philosophy regarding rules packages since 2019. I absolutely cannot stand it, from both a spectating point of view and a driving point of view. Now obviously I've never gotten behind the wheel of a real cup car, but I spent a lot of time with the closest thing in iRacing, which follows the current rules packages very closely. When NASCAR releases a new generation car, they scan it and add it onto the simulation. As soon as they brought the 2019 package over and you can drive a cup car flat out 100% at a track like Atlanta with slick old asphalt and barely any grip, that killed it for me. They latched onto this idea of turning every 1.5 mile track into a restrictor plate/pack race kinda track and it just doesn't interest me in the slightest.
    Bring the HP back up, take away a lot of the downforce and especially the reliance on aero grip, more specifically ground effect aero from the cars being slammed into the track with a massive front splitter and side skirts creating a ton of suction into the track. We don't need to be going as fast as we were in 2014, but 200mph at the end of the straightaway at a place like Michigan or Pocono in qualifying trim? I don't think that's unreasonable really. Make the cars spend a lot more time off-throttle in the corners, faster straightaway speeds, slower cornering speeds. That's what would bring me back as a fan of the sport. At least for the faster 1.5 mile and up tracks. If you wanna keep the higher downforce packages for short tracks, that's fine with me. Even with the 2019+ packages, the short tracks still proved to be the most exciting and interesting races on the schedule consistently.
    I've been a dedicated follower of the sport since about 1997 when I was old enough to understand what I was watching on TV. That stopped about midway through 2019. It really irks me that the people in charge over at NASCAR are so out of touch with what their dedicated fanbase wants. We're not all dumb idiots who just tune in for the wrecks. For a lot of us, pack racing isn't the only thing that makes stock car races exciting. A lot of us thoroughly enjoy the technical side of things and the race-craft.

      What smaller track? Run them at Talledega unrestricted with empty grandstands. 235 mph down the back straight where you actually have to drive through the turns instead of just holding the throttle wide open all the way around the track. The current crop of Hollywood wheel holders that call themselves stock car drivers would be way past their skill level at those speeds. It would take drivers like Richard Petty, Dale Sr, Buddy Baker, David Pierson, those old school drivers that could really wheel a stock car.

    Shit.... I remember the cars cresting 216mph to 221mph.... Those were racing days!

    The last season was good mainly because we all knew the car was on the way out so nostalgia played its way in. Also they tried a bunch of new tracks so even if the races weren’t good you spent a long time looking forward to Bristol dirt , Nashville, and Cota to see what it’s going to be.

    Gen 4 and 5 of nascar will always be my favorite. The cars were harder to drive and I think the speed mixed perfectly with drafting. It (for me) was the golden age of nascar (besides to 90s that I didn’t get to watch). 90s-2010 Cars will always be the best in my book. Everything after is just junk and I don’t care for it at all.

    Many people I spoke to said the reason they enjoyed the 2021 season so much is because the dominant team won the championship. Saying that Kyle Larson would have won even on the old NWC points system. Personally I found the 2021 season entertaining, but am much more excited for this current season with the new package.

    IMHO I think the package, speeds, etc. haven't been the biggest problem over the past 2 decades: it's the tracks. NASCAR wanted to get into bigger markets and sponsors wanted less torn up cars heading into the 2000s, thus came the advent of the 1.5 mile cookie cutters. And they've been hit or miss at best. Auto Club and Atlanta have the right idea, turning themselves into a short track and superspeedway, respectively. The 2021 season was great was because there was less of these tracks, which utilized the 550 package.

    Fans will blame moving the door # forward for the cars being slower.
