    Yes, Geoff's the same guy you're thinking of; I thought your channel name was familiar. Geoff is one of the founding members of VoicePlay, back in 1997 when they were called 4:2:Five . Layne Stein, the beatboxer, is the other remaining OG member, but Eli Jacobson (the bald tenor with the hat) has been with them for over 1o years now. J. None- the black baritone with buttery smooth runs- was with the group for about 5 years before he left to sing for the Navy, but he still comes back to feature with VoicePlay when he has leave. Adrianna- who was only about 16 when this was filmed- still features with them, including their latest release (which happend yesterday- Jingle Bell Rock, but the Mean Girls version).

    Geoff (bass singer) is the one who did the arrangement for Home Free's "Elvira" collaboration with The Oakridge Boys. The two groups competed on season 4 of the a capella competition show "The Sing-Off" (Pentatonix won season 3 and visited during season 4), so these groups all know each other and collaborate from time to time - Avi Kaplan (former bass from Pentatonix) was a guest on Home Free's rendition of "Ring of Fire", various Home Free members pop up in some Voiceplay videos and so on.
    During the competition show, Voiceplay and Home Free had to work up a performance together in case they had to do a direct competition. They never did compete directly, so the song was never performed on the show, but they had so much fun working together that they went ahead and did a video of it on their own called "Zombies Vs. Hillbillies - Survivor".
    BTW, Adam Chance who's now with Home Free was in a group called "Street Corner Symphony" that competed in Season 2 of The Sing-Off.

    There's a saying among the fans of the three big a cappella groups: If you think of them as being in high school, Pentatonix were the choir nerds (the Trio went to high school and choir together), Home Free were the country kids having a tailgate party out in the parking lot (since 2 of the founders grew up in Minnesota, probably not), and VoicePlay were the theater kids, since many of their videos have full costumes, makeup, sets, backgrounds, etc. While a number of VoicePlay videos DO have theatrical elements, as this one did, many others are much simpler, letting you concentrate on the music they're creating.
    Theatrical videos: Phantom of the Opera, Hoist the Colors, My Mother Told Me, Valhalla Calling, The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim), We Don't Talk About Bruno, Little Mermaid medley
    Non-theatrical videos: I Can't Make You Love Me, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, Nothing Else Matters, Bridge Over Troubled Waters

    Generally the arranger develops the sound, records each part, and distributes the consolidated piece plus the individual part that each member needs to learn. Individuals discuss changes with the arranger, but the arranger makes the final decision. They then learn their own part, record it in their home studio, and send it back. The arranger consolidates and edits the vocal tracks. He has already planned the video, shot by shot - they get together and do the shoot in a day, or part of a day. The entire process is very disciplined. It allows room for differences, but not tantrums and haggling. The arranger edits the video, and sends it off to Ed Boyer for the final edit. Layne and Geoff are founding members, Eli (rhymes with jelly, the tenor) joined in 2010. Eli has been doing an increasing number of tasks, and took on the whole project for Creep (a STUNNING version.) He's now committed to join with Layne and Geoff on alternating projects, so each will do one every 3 months. (But he does have a brand-new baby at home, so we're not sure when the new plan kicks in.) Watch their Christmas release this year, (Jingle Bell Rock/Mean Girls) and all of the members and families are in the audience. (The members are also on stage in costume of course.) Adriana is in the new one, too. She's been doing about 1/year for the last 4-5 years. For this one, Grinch, she was only about 16. I think she's 19 now, but I may be a bit off.

    This is the first video of theirs I ever saw. And I was hooked. In a lot of the videos they tend to be a little bit theatrical as they are here. Not always, but their backgrounds are Disney and Universal Studios so theatricality comes pretty easily to them.
    Geoff the bass singer, and Layne Stein the beatboxer, have arranged about 95% of their content, trading off every other month. Recently the bald tenor, Eli Jacobsen, has started becoming more active in that and will be doing more in the future. He is also their tech wizard and does a lot of their lighting and digital backgrounds. The black baritone is J None who was with them from about 2017 to 2021. The Navy recruited him to sing for them and he is about halfway through his five year hitch. He still comes back a lot to be a semi featured artist, but many of us feel he’s just not there at the moment. Adriana has been in several of their videos starting when she was 15 years old which was a birthday gift from the group to her. Geoff has known Adriana since she was a toddler.
    Up until about 2020 they had a very high tenor named Earl and you can see him an older videos. It’s always a surprise to see this burly guy with this really intense laser focused tenor. Before J joined the group, Tony Wakim was the baritone from about 2010 to 2017 and since J left, Cesar de la Rosa is filling that spot.
    Because they’re one person short they are filling it with a series of guest artist many of which come back from time to time.

    Great reaction. They do on average 1 video a month (plus Geoff's solo vid and one or two minis/shorts). Who ever decides to take on a song is then responsible for it in entirety usually Geoff or Layne but sometimes Eli as well from arrangement to video direction (sometimes with help) and editing. Eli does the lighting and sometimes they hire makeup and camera operators but mostly do everything themselves. All info is in the description of their videos including guest links and any extras (except The Grinch he's The Grinch)

    YAY!!! Branching out!!! All I can do is wink! I'm sure others will fill you in on the group's details. As far as anything else from them... Sky's the limit. For the SEASON, they do an excellent "Oogie Boogie Song" from Tim Burton's Nightmare before Christmas. They just released another Christmas themed version of "Jingle Bell Rock" (as someone else mentioned). I LOVE their version of Oh Holy Night. AND... for your "mix-and-match-but-no-favorites" pleasure... They do a wonderful, FUN collaboration with Home Free... "Zombies vs. Hillbillies - Survivor (VoicePlay vs. Home Free)" I'll give you one wild guess which group plays the Hillbillies 😉 Great reaction, Red! (p.s. This made my DAY!!)

      @AudioVile 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@redheadedneighbor I wouldn't say it's an issue. I had seen NBC before, but so long ago that I didn't remember this particular song (or the newer one by Geoff doing Jack's Lament). It really showcases Geoff and hi amazing range, but the BVs are also amazing!!

    • @janetdw
      @janetdw 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@redheadedneighbor It helps if you know the basic storyline: Jack’s bored with being scary, visits Christmastown, wants to be Santa, Oogie Boogie kidnaps Santa. That’s pretty much what you need to put the videos in context.
      Oogie Boogie is often recommended and that is when the Oogie Boogie man has kidnapped Santa and has very bad plans for him. It is very Geoff-centric as he is portraying Oogie Boogie. Normally they are a lot more of an ensemble group, although when they have a guest artist they do like to feature them more predominantly when they can.

    • @rcinsley

      @@redheadedneighbor I had never seen NBC before I experienced VP's version of "Oogie Boogie's Song," and the performance seemed weird. I appreciated their voices and the excellent singing, but it wasn't until I watched this clip ( th-cam.com/video/clURHZ5TfCQ/w-d-xo.html ) of that scene from the movie that I "got it." In this case, you really should see he original performance before trying to digest the cover. It would be best if you watched the whole movie, but OK if you only watch the scene being covered by VP.
