I am an ordinary Japanese woman married to a black American man, living in Japan. One of my high school English teachers was a black man from Florida (I also met teachers from Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Iceland).
FYI, Japan is the opposite of a multicultural nation like the US; only 2.6% of the population are foreigners, mostly Asians. Consequently, black people naturally stand out unless near US military bases.Japanese people are generally indifferent and uninformed about race. Before dating my husband, I was tottally unaware of common stereotypes about black people (e.g. fried chicken, watermelon, swimming, angry black men/women). After over a decade together, I’ve learned much, but most Japanese still view black people as "foreigners(gaijin)" broadly without nuance, imo.
