    Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The park is home to a spectacular old-growth forest that features giant Douglas fir and western red cedar trees, some of which are over 800 years old. The hiking trails in the park are well-maintained and suitable for hikers of all skill levels, making Cathedral Grove a great place to explore for families and solo hikers alike.
    One of the most popular hiking trails in Cathedral Grove is the Tree Trail, a short loop trail that takes hikers on a scenic journey through the forest. The trail is just under a kilometer in length and is wheelchair accessible, making it a great option for those with mobility concerns. The Tree Trail features interpretive signs along the way, providing information about the flora and fauna in the forest, as well as the cultural history of the area.
    For those looking for a longer hike, the park also features several longer trails that can take hikers through more of the beautiful old-growth forest. The Upper Grove Trail is a 3.5-kilometer loop that takes hikers through some of the more remote areas of the forest, and features stunning views of Cameron Lake. The Lower Grove Trail is a shorter 1.5-kilometer loop that takes hikers through the heart of the old-growth forest, offering up-close views of the towering trees and the unique flora and fauna that call the forest home.

    Ive been thru Cathedral Grove, having been born and spent my whole life living on Vancouver Island, but I know of another tiny old growth forest here far from our subject matter. Truly a spiritual experience, once one knows that having directly experienced it, you never view forests, nor trees in the same manner. Trees need to be planted and preserved for many future generations. Do your part.

    Old growth forests are amazing, the complex environment is so unique in comparison to planted forests, where I live in new england, ever since settling hear they cut down every tree they could reach, the king of England had the big ones marked with an X, stating that's the king's, they could use one big one for masts for ships, otherwise they have to make masts in pieces. The difference in old growth is massive 100's of animals and insects, flowers, mushrooms thrive in old growth.

    I enjoyed the artistic approach to this video. You could always do an old growth series and shoot a few locations like Avatar Grove and several different sections of Caramanah Walbran. There's so many cool sections of Carmanah that it could easily be three videos

      Ya I was shooting on dji pockets which are fantastic little cameras but they pale in comparison to my a7siii. I really wish dji would make a new "DJI Osmo" that giant version of the osmo pocket you could change the lenses for. Stabilization is the only downfall of the sony a7siii.

    Footage is DEFINITELY an upgrade! How long do you find it takes you to set up the shots? Do you tend to use auto or manual mode? Time is of the essence for us so it's another consideration before upgrading :D

    • @IdRatherBeHiking
      @IdRatherBeHiking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The general rule is more tripod shots the easier the hike. If you check out my Mount Hal video, all the tripod shots are with my sony the rest with the action cameras and that is the format I'll continue with if it is a hard hike. I shoot everything 100% manual so I can dial in exposure and aperture perfectly.

    This is amazing quality. The music fits well. I like the lens compression shots you took showing you hiking in the distance. Did you film this video using the Sony A7C?
    I am curious what settings you had the camera in? The video looks so well balanced!

    • @IdRatherBeHiking
      @IdRatherBeHiking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers, this is the first video I actually shot with my Sony A7siii with 24-105mm lens. This is my go to setup that I've filmed 95% of the adventures on my channel since this video. I used Cathedral grove as a test site for this camera as I wouldn't have to worry about crushing kms, weather, scrambling etc and just focus on dialing in my settings, using low light, slow motion etc. A few shots in here I used a laowo 25..mm? the 5x ultra macro lens. Everything is shot in Sony S-Gamut.3Cine - Slog3

    • @VeeTravels
      @VeeTravels ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IdRatherBeHiking By the way, the dynamic range at 4:48 is insane. This is where SLOG3 really shines IMO.

    • @VeeTravels
      @VeeTravels ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IdRatherBeHiking Wow the Sony 24-105mm lens is amazing I have heard. No wonder your video quality is so sharp. You have a versatile setup with that combination. I have the Sony A7SIII with the 16-35mm F4 PZ and 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 lens.
      Cathedral Grove does make sense for a test site. It is a nice range of exposures in the forest too.
      I am impressed you managed to successfully edit your video in SLOG3. That is by far the most difficult Picture Profile to color grade in. I get frustrated with it because the shadows always look to muddy. All of my HDR videos are done in HLG3 Picture Profile.
      May I ask why you did not export your video to be HDR compatible on TH-cam?
      I would greatly appreciate if you check out my recent HDR videos. You obviously know a lot more than me so any feedback would be a huge gift :) I subscribed to your channel by the way.

    • @IdRatherBeHiking
      @IdRatherBeHiking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VeeTravels To be honest I don't know much about HDR. I also don't have a input box to convert the signal to my monitor so I have no way of editing to HDR. I'm just focusing on mastering Slog 3, with the best colors and luma levels possible then focusing on storytelling which is what makes all videos worth watching. Maybe down the road I'll take another look at HDR but for right now my focus is on storytelling. For the A7siii shooting slog3 is all about getting your exposure at +1.7-+2.0 then using the base sony lut then balancing the luma levels on every shot as best as possible. Once that is done then color can be adjusted. Something I don't talk about on my channel but I used to be a lead artist at Microsoft so I have a background of drawing and painting, acrylics, watercolor and digital art. Its only after I switched to davinci resolve am I finally getting closer to controlling colors how I want them. It's frustrated as an artist knowing how it should look but not knowing the right tool to change that. Da vinci makes it a lot easier.

    • @IdRatherBeHiking
      @IdRatherBeHiking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VeeTravels Ya that shot was brutal still not happy with that, the sun was 100% on the tree and black in the forest. I think I could make that a lot better today with Davinci. This video was edited in premiere pro. I just subbed to you, funny I was just looking at your lighthouse walking tour, I often run down there, I live 10 minutes from there. To the decerning eye the increased color range can be seen for sure in the HDR. I don't know if the average person notices it, it may be a felt more seen thing which in the art world is often a very good thing though. Are you using a blackmagic input box to be able to edit in HDR? I think by default editing software can only see SDR without that box right?

There is also Looper Creek Canyon in the same area as the Cheewhat Giant. Looper Canyon is amazing. It is haha, only video I'm filmed in Slog 3 and is graded which is probably jargon, basically a very flat color profile and I color each shot afterwards.
