They sometimes ask other people to come up with the beat and 808s for the track, which then gets translated by the Clays. I'm sure they must have a lot of input on the process tho.
yeah it's one of the reasons I love listening to/watching him, his cymbal work is just so amazingly clean, it's like watching a masterclass in how to lay down a beat
First time watching him for me but what grabbed my attention was that all cymbals are damped so they are almost gated. This way it makes all the rest of the kit sound so clean because theres no long crashes, builds from the ride, etc - v v nice!!!!!
I have no idea how you could even memorize all those snare ghost notes and cymbal accents. His cymbalwork is otherworldly. Clay is an absolute monster.
i find the hardest part about playing polyphia songs is remembering what to play lmao. learning their songs is just playing the same part at slow speeds a million times until you don’t even need the sheet music anymore. everything just moves way too fast
Clay is insane on this, the timing is sooooo freaking tight on some of the layers I thought it was an actual drum machine mixed in first time i heard it.
YAASSSS!! finally a Clay makes a front an center appearance! between Tim crushing ribs or him and Scotty feeling each other up on their alien Ibanez's and watching Luke Holland do a playthrough was getting impatient. Love me some Luke, but when it comes to doing a playthrough of Polyphia, Clay A is who I'm waiting for. Thanks band!
2:53-3:00 I YELLED and had to replay immediately. I already loved how the guitar line/s closely follow the vocals in this section, and seeing this playthrough made me realize how close the drum line is following too. That level of intention and precision gets me every time, every replay.
A big thing I love for Polyphia is just the attention to detail with every instrument, everyone is insanely talented and doesn’t overshadow and sit the background the whole time. Everyone compliments each other and its just a perfect blend for me. The technical skill from everyone is incredible and with the progression and evolution since Muse.. Damn.. I can’t wait to see where you guys will be at 5 years from now. Let’s fucking go.
Being a beat maker, this video is amazing to see!! Trap drums not programed yet created and preformed on set! Love this here and great job on the album Clay!!
The cymbal work in this song is on a whole different level. That 2nd hi-hat with the holes in it adds some amazing depth to the whole tone of the song. Dude is a human drum machine.
I'm an amateur drummer who got to know Polyphia though Tim's apperance on Jared Dimes's end of year video, but man, when I heard the entire band I was mesmerized not only for the other music members, but especially for the drummer's work, as this kind of music and beat are not the conventional drum game. Congrats for your work and creation on the drumset to complement the guitar and bass melodies. Your cymbal work is marvelous! Thank you for the video
Wow this is insane, Now I can finally see the difficulty of drums, the amazing technique you need and precision it’s incredible and looks hella difficult
this is dope. love the dry sound of the drums. not only is he a very skilled musician, but he has great taste in tone blending. the cymbals all work so well together.
The drumming is insane. So glad that they made a drum playthrough video. The sound feels so similar to electronic beats and yet it's actual drumming, the cymbal work and the perfection is crazy. One of most unique drummers I have listened to. Absolutely love it.
I understand some of these drum parts are extremely complicated but clay makes this look just absolutely effortless. As a non-drummer, its just as impressive honestly.
This is no man, he’s mythology made real into a human-like creature. All jokes aside, Clay is top 5 most underrated drummers EVER. He’s one of the best of the new generation and deserves so much more love than what he recieves.
Unbelievable. Clay is a human metronome. Can’t believe how even the stick strokes are. Tight as can be. Almost robotic 😂. Absolutely amazing talent. Hope these guys stick around for a long time.

Luke was approached by polyphia to help write and record 6 songs on their album. Luke Holland wrote and recorded. Later it was changed by Clay Aeschliman due to what he felt was right for the song. And the fact that Clay was cool with this collaboration is way too cool \m/ .
I absolutely love the scaled back production of this, it’s represented in every aspect. The lighting, the gear, the outfit, the audio mix. @@OG-PranksterCat yea people that say stuff like OP don't really have much knowledge of the insane drummers out there. Some who probably inspired Clay even. Luke holland actually wrote some the drums on this song. But none the less he’s so good at drums.
