HUMBLE PIE - "Drugstore Cowboy": Original British Supergroup's Hard Rock Rocks Hard!

In 1969, It Still Wasn't A Common Occurrence For Independently Established Musicians To Join Forces In A New Combo, More Than The Sum Of Its Parts.
HUMBLE PIE Is One Of The First Instances Of "The Supergroup," With An Original Band Roster That Included Guitarist STEVE MARRIOTT, Ex-Of SMALL FACES, Singer/Guitarist PETER FRAMPTON, Formerly Of THE HERD, Former SPOOKY TOOTH Bassist GREG RIDLEY, And Drummer JERRY SHIRLEY From THE APOSTOLIC INTERVENTION.
MARRIOTT, In An Attempt To Expand The Sound, Invited FRAMPTON To Be A Second Guitarist In THE SMALL FACES, But Was Met With Resistance From His 'FACES Bandmates RONNIE LANE & IAN MCLAGAN. After Storming Off-Stage During A 1968 SMALL FACES Performance,MARRIOTT Quit The Band And Tapped FRAMPTON For A New, All-Star Band The British Press Was Already Labeling As A "Supergroup." MARRIOTT Chose The Name HUMBLE PIE In Order To Downplay Such Overhyped Expectations, And Signed With ANDREW LOOG-Oldham's Record Label, Immediate Records. Their Debut Disc, "As Safe As Yesterday Is," Was Released In August, 1969.
"As Safe As Yesterday Is" Was One Of The First Albums To Be Described By The Music Press As "Heavy Metal," As Per A 1970 Review In Rolling Stone Magazine.
In July Of 1971, HUMBLE PIE Opened For GRAND FUNK RAILROAD At Their Historic Shea Stadium Concert, An Event That Broke THE BEATLES Record For Fastest Selling Stadium Concert, To That Date. Also In 1971, HUMBLE PIE Released Their Most Successful Album Of Their Entire Career, "Rock On," As well As A Live Set Recorded At The Fillmore East In NYC, And Titled "Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore." By The Time Both Albums Hit The Shelves, FRAMPTON Had Already Left The Band To Go Solo.
