- In this video, we discuss the perception of BMWs being unreliable compared to other luxury cars. The sophisticated systems in BMWs can result in more potential failures, making them less reliable. Expensive maintenance and occasional unfulfilled promises also contribute to their bad reputation. We also look into a reason why I like buying used BMWs and what makes them a good deal for me. Despite their reputation, proper maintenance and research can lead to a positive ownership experience.

Great video! My 2009 BMW Z4 35i with the N54 has been reliable for me. It has about 144,000 miles on it and has never left me stranded. It my first BMW and first convertible. I’ve owned the car for 6 years. 😀
that's impressive! do you have any advise on how you maintained and driving style of yours? I have 2010 z4 53K
I got lucky and replaced both turbos in my 35is Z4 under warranty because of wastegate issues.
Hard top wiring was also an issue, and the water pump gave out but other than that it's a manual and it's worth every penny. Recently did turbo inlets, larger intercooler, software tune, catted downpipe from AR. Fell in love with it all over again!
I love my Z4 35is. I agree that when the manufacturer pushes the performance of the car maintenance will be more than a typical car. Your videos are BOSS!
2020 BMW X5 owner here. 100k miles. No issues at all with the exception of an air strut failing which could have been my fault with a pot hole. Oil change every 5k miles. I don't follow the recommended maintenance schedule. There is no such thing as lifetime transmission fluid etc. Change those every 50k and you'll hit 200k easy
Oh also had so many oil leaks from gearbox and cover gasket, everywhere really
Unfortunately for the US market the cars are built in Carolina and not built Germany.
European cars are a lot more reliable than the US counterparts as they are German built.
A lot of modern cars use a lot of plastic parts around the engine which are lighter but eventually get brittle and will brake when exposed to heat and cold over time.
Awesome video, please dont stop making these!
Yes, BMW makes performance oriented vehicles. Unfortunately, they use cheap plastic and unnecessarily complex design that adds nothing to the performance. They have no regard for the consumer long-term. They make the cars to last 3-5 years max. Mechanics all complain that German cars design can be somewhat retarded. No thought is put into reliability.
I've only worked on ONE E39 when it comes to German cars, and my observation is that BMW designers constantly engineer around problems and over engineer at that. Take the ridiculous heater valves in the E39 540i, why? They are just set up to fail. Then there are the silly water pump pipes in the V pan, and the water pump, and the cooling system in general, all complex, fiddly and prone to breaking.
What about those plastic chain guides BMW? Or the plastic inlet manifold - on a V8 that is designed to operate at over 100 degrees centigrade? Are you nuts? Then we have fuse boxes under the seat - no way they could get soaked with water from a leaky screen right? Water cooled alternator? Brittle PAS pump arms, unprotected exposed steel fuel lines, dodgy auto shift linkage, rattly drive shafts - I'll stop there.
Where the E39 scores is solid construction and handsome design, interior comfort and, when it is working, excellent driving dynamics - but own one myself? No, really, no.
I think American owners have suffered from US built vehicles.. European vehicles are better built..
If I was buying a Japanese vehicle I would always want one that was built in Japan..
My z4 35i broke down every 3k miles for 7 years. Also had waste gate rattle (standard)
Water pump - replaced 3 times
Water housing for pump cracked 3 times also. Plastic rubbish
Roof broke 4 times
Right front shock leak
Injectors replaced twice. 1 bank of 3 then opposite bank a couple years later
Coolant housing cracked many times
N54 engine is a stunner but so unreliable it's not even funny.
I went on a forum and found which issues will happen at which miles 30,40,50k etc
And it all happened within a few miles as stated. Almost like it's planned by BMW lol
Loved the z4 but it rattled like crazy inside also which was almost unbearable.
The 1st car I ever heard with a plastic valve cover was a BMW. They were pushing the envelope of plastic. Those electric water pumps are also plastic. Does it make sense? Many components under the hood are plastic.
Great advice. I’m about to pick up a 2021 530i with 17k miles. Should I purchase extended warranty from BMW or an independent company or is purchasing extra warranty even worth it?
Ppl flexin about a 3.3 diesel engine (200HP) from Mazda that is comming in 2023. Yo an old E39 diesel had 200HP in fuc*ing 2000s. The same goes for other engines. Mercedes and BMW are simply a decade ahead of the "competition," and only ignorant people don't see this because to them it's "just a BMW." Innovation, however, comes at a price.
American automotive manufacturers: "We tried, but just can't manage to make a car entirely of plastic"
Germans: "Hold my beer"
The plastics and window/sunroof seals are the bane of my existence.
Water intrusion along side old, heat embrittled plastics are the only issues I've had on my three.
Well said.
Nice vid as usual. Having learned the maintenance requirement via my e89. Now trying to convince the wife to adopt an e92 coupe for herself and kids.
Anything extra you think i should look out for in finding one?
I got an e92 and it's awesome, just try to go for the later engines
BMW. Buy More Warranty. Bavarian Money Waster. So true. Great video! You must maintain these cars! You can get a great deal buying one 2-4yrs old with low mileage. If you are a person that does 5k miles a year, then you are a good candidate. You buy one a M850i now in 2024 that is 2-3 years old with 15k miles for 60 grand (US). Thencarnwas b 110k brand new! Then, If you own it 10 years, you'll only have 75k miles. That's usually when the problems starts with German cars. You get a fun, luxurious car for 10 years! Then get rid of it. If you put 10k or more miles, STAY AWAY!! Get a Lexus!
En pocas palabras bmw es un carro para mecanicos
The haters are only here on the internet (keyboard warriors 😂) but back in the real world BMW enjoys a very high percentage of loyal customers, one of the highest in the industry. Not all drivetrains are troublesome, when the N54 was out so was the N52 which is what I have and it is almost as bullet proof as any Japanese car but way more efficient an engine more power and better fuel economy than any equivalent Japanese power plant. The current drivetrains the B48 B58 and the latest 4.4 V8 are proving to be very reliable hence why some of those are used by Toyota for the new Supra.
Good video to show my wife ;)
They are but only up to 100k miles🤣 or 80k if you arent lucky
