    How to Fix Analog Stick Drift - 3 Ways - In this video I'm showing you 3 different ways to fix analog stick drift. Option 1: Replace the analog stick. Option 2: Clean the potentiometer. Option 3: Replace the potentiometer. Depending on the problem, cleaning or replacing just the potentiometer won't always work but they can be great options to try first since they are easier than replacing the entire analog stick.

    HUGE TIP - For replacing a potentiometor, if you pry it away from the main assembly (like you would to clean it) and bend it back and forth till it snaps off from the pins, that makes it so much easier because then you can just desolder each pin and pull them out one at a time. That way you don't even need a solder sucker or solder wick.

    This is gold! I've replaced the whole analog stick many times... little did I realize you can take off the sensors and clean them.
    Since this video, I've since replaced the sensors from a new analog stick, without replacing the potentiometers and it seemed to work on one controller... But like everything, its a hit or miss, didn't work on another controller.
    Now instead of removing the whole analog stick, I'll just be replacing the potentiometers from now! Thanks!

The vertical axis were jumping up and down before, now they're stable. I bought a spare analog stick (the square with two potetinometers) from a Xbox One controller for 1 USD and I fixed my Series controller up and down stickness and drifting by doing the method 2! The only difference is that I got the small spart (metal ring) that you removed and, instead of putting it back after cleaning the insides of the potentiometer, I replaced with the spare part's one (since the original seemed damaged) and it worked (on second try, I had to use both metal rings from the spare potentiometers because I destroyed the first one putting it back in)!!!!!

    • @iseetrolledpeople
      @iseetrolledpeople 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's easier to find the whole connector, "the green casing", and just take the little round metal thingies and replace them in your controller. They're pretty cheap.

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iseetrolledpeople the wipers (the little metal thingies) are not the cause of the drift (unless they are oxidized, and in that case all you need is contact cleaner).
      The scratched painted carbon in the green casing is the problem.

    • @iseetrolledpeople
      @iseetrolledpeople 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bufordmaddogtannen you don't need to have the scratches to have drift. Those metal, copper looking discs deform or get used and stop doing things properly.

    • @bufordmaddogtannen
      @bufordmaddogtannen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iseetrolledpeople it depends. If it's not crushed beyond repair, the wiper can be bent back so that it makes contact again. I fixed hundreds of potentiometers over the years when it was worth doing it and these ranged from console controllers to audio to general aviation equipment.
      As a rule of thumb, if I cannot clean the potentiometer (or bring the wiper back in shape), if I get an exact resistance value replacement I prefer to replace the whole thing.

    This might sound like a dumb question but why use that tape to protect other parts of the board and components? Doesn't the part of the board you're heating up will become hot anyway so surely the heat won't destroy the other part.
