      the first part you piloting (or Roleplay-wise) help Joker and EDI pilot the Normandy against endless waves of Reaper ships with endlessly ever increasing numbers and strength and difficulty.
      ...
      and when Normandy's eventually brought down to a crash, it's now you and your squad's turn to fight endless waves of Reaper ground units, with endlessly ever increasing numbers and strength and difficulty.

    It's weird. This is the worst ending knowing that every civilization you've met, every person, is now dead. Turned to ashes like the cycles before them, yet this is the only ending (besides Destroy) that has Shepard actually act like the character that, if you chose to, stood defiant against a galaxy hellbent on destroying itself. As a paragon this dude could choose to end a centuries long war between the Quarians and Geth, or stop the Krogans slow march towards extinction.
    I'll never choose these endings thanks to the lovely works of modders, but out of the EC this speech is the absolute best thing to come out of it. Also fuck Bioware for originally having this ending lead to a Game Over screen.

    I chose synthesis as well because I thought I was the best possible ending. But now that I think about it, it was the worst one to pick even more then this one. Indoctrination theory says it's bad cuz u give into the reapers logic but not only that, even outside the theory you aren't creating peace, instead you're forcing a complacent loss of individuality, basically: the one thing that was worth fighting for u gave up. Peace by giving up freedom, Universal understanding by forfeiting free will.

    • @TTheDDoctor
      @TTheDDoctor 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ...And this is necessarily a bad thing?

    • @AfroSmilyFace
      @AfroSmilyFace 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      OF COURSE ITS BAD! The most basic, fundamental thing that makes us what we are is our indivduality and freedom of choice. Sure its the reason for things that have to do with conflict, and causing of pain to others, but its worth having. Things arent made good because the world is made into a forced order where all things are one, the greater good comes from people making decisions to do right over wrong. The synthesis world is a cold, gray, emotionless world without the will of oneself. If it came to the world ending in fire or ice, I choose the glorious passion of fire over the uniform void of cold.

    • @TTheDDoctor
      @TTheDDoctor 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ray Stevenson Perhaps I should elaborate. By "Necessarily a bad thing," I was implying the following: If we were free to do all the good we desired but did not have the free will to do evil, would the world be a better place? Certainly- the costs of freedom like conflict and inflicting pain are eliminated. Obviously, free will has a place in this world either way. The constant value of these locations is everywhere where good may be done. All other roads lead to oblivion, and should never have been psychologically possible.
      So then, assuming that only the freedom to do evil was taken from us, would that be bad as well to you?

    • @AfroSmilyFace
      @AfroSmilyFace 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I can see what youre saying, however to me free will is a thing that cant be limited, if it has any then i dont believe it to be true free will. Its intresting that you bring this up, cuz we were discussing something like this in my philosophy class awhile back. Anyway, the reason I say this is because well, I know this is touchy subject but just let me use this in for the sake of this argument. If we believe that God gave us free will, or a higher being as it would say, why would it allow us to do evil? Well simple, If I was a higher being it would be pointless to make my creations only do what I want, like any love or fellowship, we dont want programmed dolls we want living thinking individuals who may freely love us. The cost of free will is the existence of evil, but also makes 'higher good' which is goodness that is not done cuz we are suppose to but because we want to, and we feel it to be right.
      Now getting to your one point of 'perhaps if we could do all the good we wish but no evil.' I dont think thats freedom at all, we should be free because we can choose, if choice is limited, its not free. Perhaps it would bring a sort of 'good' to the universe by erasing conflict, however i believe in a 'higher good' a true and chosen act that was not forced.Even with all the evils and pain in the world, that one good act means more all the synthetic ones, ones that were programmed.
      We might have to agree to disagree on this one and I think I know why. Im no mind reader or anything, but Id like to you might be more of someone who thinks that if its universally benificial, then its ok. The happiness of all people justify the costs. There's nothing wrong with that, I however dont believe that. I believe there is more to right than just everyones happiness. I could not persay murder an innocent person, simply because the world is better for it. In the end, In my heart, I could never condone any violation of someones will simply because the world is better for it. SO I could never force that onto an entire galaxy, even for everlasting peace. It sounds stupid perhaps, but to me the ends dont justify the means, I could never take others choices away, they are what make us human.

    • @TTheDDoctor
      @TTheDDoctor 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Stevenson I have seen this argument for free will sounded off in nearly every debate that contains the subject. Free acts are the only true acts, God gave us free will to keep the world from being bleak, and happiness is worthless if you are compelled to be happy.
      Oh, and to clear up any misconceptions, happiness is not my ultimate goal; purity is. Happiness is a positive side-effect of this.
      Now then, if you wish to hear the deconstruction of these points of which are advocating for complete free will, then please let me know. I will not shove this down your throat, considering the psyche behind the advocacy of free will. (pardon my Bulverism) I welcome the exchange, if you're okay with that.

      @@shlomorothstein9691 I think the reapers were extremely strong but they also had a weakness. Remember, in the final space battle, under constant fire a reaper fell (but was able to take down a ship with it)
      Also, in the final mission, you can take down a reaper with a well timed shot with the nuke launcher (in its beam when it's priming)
      Also also :D in the Rannoch mission, you did take down a reaper with the missiles guided by the Normandy. They're not invincible.
      but from a purely storytelling perspective, they had to make an enemy so very strong to raise the stakes. I'm torn, but losing the war in this cycle because you refused to use the crucible is a very poetic ending. Though I would love a dlc WHERE YOU FIGHT TEETH AND BONES, YET STILL LOSE

      The only way I see Shepard refusing all options is if the genophage was sabotaged, the Quarians or Geth killed, most if not all his squadmates dying through the course of the series, and no romantic interest waiting for him. At the end of the day it isn’t realistic to get a perfect ending with no compromise, as the illusive man said Shepard is going to have to make choices he’s not equipped to make. The geth honoured their promise to legion and gave their lives in the fight and all the races will hopefully take the lessons they’ve learnt from working with the geth and take better steps in the future with synthetics hopefully leading to peace between them. It makes sense that if a major EMP blast will kill all reapers it will kill all geth there’s no way around that unless u want a convoluted reason why itll kill the reapers and nothing else. 3 years late to this comment but I just finished the game and Im rly happy with the perfect destroy ending .

    What I like about this ending is that it’s the only ending where Shepard never submits to the catalyst or reapers will. After fighting so many reapers and being exposed to “artifacts” that indoctrinate everyone, Shepard remained strong willed. When indoctrination didn’t work the catalyst resorted to emotional scars by disguising itself as a kid and made Shepard believe he was responsible for the death. But In the end Shepard strong will over came the mental grasp of the reapers and led the strongest attack ever against. In a way Shepard still won and it clearly pissed off the catalyst when he said “so be it!”. Even though the reapers harvest this cycle and moved on, Shepard for once challenged them and probably fought the reapers the hardest in this cycle and never came to there tricks, for that the reapers feared and respected Shepard. So this ending isn’t so bad imo, it’s actually the most realistic, you wouldn’t want to finish this on your enemy terms.

When the reapers liquify you, you as an individual is dead but your memory is alive, but your soul has moved on, just like in the control ending. Shepard memory lived but Shepard was intact dead. Plus would you truly trust the reapers to keep there word, would you even really trust that they wanna “work” with you to find a “solution”. In the end we just gotta accept our demise and try our best to give the next cycle the best chance we can. It’s implied that the next cycle won in the after credit scene of the refusal ending. The reapers are very tough but not invincible and given ample warning and time to prepare, undoubtedly we can create technology on par with them. It’s also hinted that the reapers hit a technical stagnation, seeing how the protheans put up a better fight than most cycles including ours and took a few reapers with them and how our cycle had radical victories against them, the reapers were well aware that they can’t hide the proof of the cycles forever and we’re well aware that organic truly did have the potential to surpass them. The catalyst it’s self said that when it said “our solution no longer works”.

I don't want her to die without any hope left so I don't refuse the choices. I don't choose Control because that goes against everything I believe in. I don't chose Destroy because that would mean destroying the Geth as well, meaning that the quarians' future where they don't have to live with their suits on is null and void, that would make all my previous choices to make peace between the quarians and the geth all for nothing. The only option I have left is Synthesis, and despite it basically joining all synthetic and organic life, it is the only choice where there is the least amount of death and it will create true peace.

    I think this is the most morally sound ending (if you buy into the theme that synthetics were indeed living beings). Let everyone go out on their own terms. You don't get to choose who lives and dies. It is also the most thematically appropriate ending IMO. Also, Indoctrination theory is essentially canon in my mind (even though I know it wasn't intentional) so this lines up really well with beating the Reapers indoctrination attempt which even though our cycle succumbs, helps prevent what we learned from being sabotaged by an indoctrinated Shepherd. I think there is actually a lot of hope and positivity in this ending the more you think about it. It also plays nicely into the themes of inevitability and makes the story a more thought provoking journey where you have to take pleasure in the journey despite the destination that we know we will arrive at.

    Did you guys actually lsiten to what the story told you?
    Play The Leviathan DLC.
    Then listen to the story.
    Then listen to the extended cut.
    It's still not perfect, but acceptable.
    The Leviathan race had an interesting lifestyle, which included indoctrinating smaller, land dweller species, and using them to their needs. They used another races as those races used technology. But when the slave races created AI's to help them do tasks the leviathen used them for, a problem had risen. I suspect that the leviathans couldn1t controll AIs just like that, and when synthetic life revolted, sooner or later, since conflict is a way of life, they had no good solution for the problem. And their established life of peace and well being, remember there were probably no major confilicts, since the biological races were controlled by leviathan, so it was a new problem for them when AI made major conflict.
    So they decided to build an AI to solve this problem.
    But the AI was flawed i na way and had a twisted and limited understanding (since it was the product of a race with similar limits). So the AI made a solution that harvested the essence of all advanced sentiant life every 50.000 years.
    Point in case is that the reapers are a bank of these essences, but they also trap it within themselves. No conflict and no change for the harvested. But no reaper is jsut a simple synthetic either.
    THe crucible is basically a DLC for the Citadell, and it changes this AI, allowing Shepard to solve the conflict.
    - The refusal ending can be seen as... a refusal for real or imaginery chackles and a stand for freedom. But you fail if you choose it because you get harvested anyway.
    -The Red ending, or Destroy Ending would be one of the best. Fuck the Reapers, screw diplomatic and bullshit solutions. You came a really long way to destroy the reapers and you won't be having tea and biscuits with them now.
    However after considering the given explanations and the costs...losing the Geth and EDI, and destroying the essence of all previous races. You would really reconsider.
    - The Blue or Controll Ending would be the easiest to understand and the default to go choice. Sure, you condewmn yourself to eternal guardianship, which is both good and bad, but still. You don't kill synthetics, and even that the reapers don1t get blown to smithereens, you can controll them. But the AI says that this solution might not be stable, and you don't really gain anything from it. So you mgiht want to check out...
    -The Green or Synthesis Ending. It's not an accident that this is the "hardest" ending to unlock. This is the ending that gets you all the benefits of the blue ending with additional gain. Sure if you think about it it's a huge fucknig chance to change everything in the Galaxy and altoguh the AI ensures you that this solution is stable, you would think that suddenly turning everyone glowing green wouldn't win you any popularity awards. And you kind of want to fuck all the reapers up for what they've done.
    BUT: You are not there out of revenge, but to save the Galaxy.
    The AI seems to advertise this option by tellnig you that you gain all the vast knowledge the reapers had.
    You mgiht see the Reapers as something that has to be saved as well. In a way, the Reapers themselves are forced to do the harvest by the AI.
    IF you actually choose synthesis, EDI comments on the aftermath and hearing her opinions gives of the clue that Synthesis is a great decision.
    I'ce chosen Synthesis, otherwise I would have chosen Controll while wishing I could choose Destroy.

    • @hadeseye2297
      @hadeseye2297 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "the Reapers themselves are forced to do the harvest by the AI"
      - Rearpers are nothing more than AI.
      "IF you actually choose synthesis, EDI comments on the aftermath and hearing her opinions gives of the clue that Synthesis is a great decision."
      - A vacum cleaner with a sexy voice is still a vacum cleaner.
      "However after considering the given explanations and the costs...losing the Geth and EDI, and destroying the essence of all previous races. You would really reconsider."
      - They are all already gone, long dead. Period. Better thing would be to clone Javik, or make clones based on DNA from bones, like in Jurassic park.
      "THe crucible is basically a DLC for the Citadell, and it changes this AI, allowing Shepard to solve the conflict."
      - It's not a DLC but a patch. DLC extends, patch changes. Catalyst without a patch wouldn't allow for any other choice than cycles to continue. Catalyst is a Reaper, which means it is an AI. It won;t matter if you will try to reason with it or "DLC" it. You need a patch, or a virus. Crucible can ba called that as well. Patch or a virus, that alterates Catalyst way of thinking.
      Still a great game that makes people think.
