I say Paul refers in this passage to the Circumcision before their Messiah, those like him as Saul were tempted into sin, but now they have been baptised "saved" into the church.

Being "saved" is from the condemnation from Adam not salvation, those baptised for their profession of faith, as this is a parallel passage to Romans 5. Paul can only baptise as his Great Commision, he has no power of judgement.
The "works" here are not good works, as they are commanded for those baptised into the church as Ephesians 2:10, and I have a Ytube video 'Ephesians 2:9. Not of works? #32 Myths in so-called Christianity'.
