well they broke up once before and then came back with several releases thereafter and tours. so maybe they found a spark and were able to put the breakup on pause for a few years. we'll never really know what the whole initial breakup was about or why it happened, that much is certain. I do think it was an indication though, that the trio are not all that interested in remaining a cohesive unit and are very much about doing their own thing. I have said to many peers that the final track on year of the snitch was called "disappointed" for a reason however, and that track may have told us all we need to know about where the band is. still though, I cannot help but wonder if the pandemic really interfered with them like is has so many other bands. they are such a force when it comes to their live performances and stage presence. one cannot imagine a death grips release without an accompanying tour. so maybe, just maybe, covid got in the way of another release and they are waiting until they can tour again in order to release it. perhaps this is merely a hiatus. either way, as fans of this group we were completely and utterly spoiled with the consistent incredible releases, and we surely all took it for granted. how many bands have ever released the amount of ingenious material DG has in that time frame? surely every band has one or two stinkers but Death Grips mastered their niche and will eventually be remembered as one of the greatest bands of the last decade and perhaps, one of the greatest ever.

I’m so glad that it did play it because I looked up a review of the trio and thanks to Anthony Fantano I started listening to death grips because of your review and damn if death grips isn’t one of my fav musical artists I’ve ever come across. I remember hearing Ex-Military when /mu/ was shilling it before TMS was a sparkle in Zach's eye. I loved it so fucking much.
I remember the insane TMS hype. I was honestly disappointed when I first heard it, but I quickly fell in love after 3 or 4 listens.
I remember the NLDW fiasco with the label, and the hype surrounding it. Then the album art.... that's when I realized how genius and truly avant garde they were.
Again, was disappointed, but quickly fell in love. This is a trend that followed with EVERY LP of theirs, except Year of the Snitch.
The others get kinda tired, but Ex-Military still hasn't to me. There are a few tracks that are a bit of a lul, but the hits hit SO. FUCKING. HARD.
I know gushing about DG is a meme, but they are legitimately my favorite music outfit of all time. Their entire aura and image is so intriguing and interesting.
I can't pick a favorite LP. But Stockton is underrated you fucks.

My opinion is that this album stands the test of time because Death Grips are artistic in everything they do. They are unashamedly themselves but they also put effort into their music. I feel like this ability to be mentally free to create what you truly want to (rather than what will sell) is admirable and each member brings something unique, stylistic, and artistic to the table.
Rides vocals are emotive, the lyrics are strange but poignant. It's like an insight into how someone's mind spins when they have a lot to think about going from one thing to another to another. It all makes sense but you need a little bit to unravel it. This is one of the few records that I remember lyrics randomly when walking around. So much reminds me of it, and this makes me think that the writing and the subject matter of the songs (however vague) are the raw thoughts and feelings that many of us can relate to from day to day.
Zach Hill is truly a creative genius. I don't think I need to say much more but these songs are some of the most creative arrangements, variety and quality of sounds and textures, phrases, articulations, use of technology, etc that I have ever heard. From a production point of view I'm in awe of the musicality and technical expertise and freedom. This record feels fresh because the production and ideas were fresh and cannot simply be copied. You can't copy raw talent. Death Grips tapped into something that if anybody else tried to copy them it would fall flat on its arse because it would lack any integrity, any character.

What you touch on at the end of this little video, the bands portrayal lyrically and sonically of a benign digital dystopia that we've sort of entered into since the band started releasing music, has been the reason I haven't returned to Death Grips recently. Its scary to listen back to these records, think about what Ride is rapping about and not feel the distance I once felt between my lived experience and Ride's (or his characters's) portrayal of life in techno-dystopia. Being a teenager when I first heard Death Grips to now a few years into my adult life, he veil has sort of been lifted for me and the music feels more relevant. That being said, Klink still goes hard as fuck.

I was 19 when this record came out, and Anthony's right: this record came out of seemingly nowhere and just started making waves. 2011 was a really strong, transitional year for hiphop (Goblin/ XXX/ Live. Love. A$AP), but this thing dropped and everything else suddenly looked quaint. By the time The Money Store came out, pretty much all of my mates at uni were hooked.
