NOTM in C is insane to me personally. I think that’s high A,if not S. I can understand the criticism though
I think it's way better than jenny's death. I often skip some songs off of it (like turned off), but not from notm. It's just way more creative and listenable. They are both good, but the first half is the better one.
It surprised me since he put TPTB as one of the best of the decade over a different Death Grips album (besides TMS higher up, but that's a given).
Could not agree moreeeeeee n always feel underrepresented in this opinion. It’s like floating in an open ocean but the waves are relentlessly chopped bjork vocals. Ofc I can see why someone wouldn’t like that, but fuuuuuuck it does it for me

I don't really understand how YotS was breaking expecations and fucking with fans. Honestly that album just felt like a super psychedelic expansion on Ex-Military, especially on tracks like The Fear, Black Paint, Flies, Hahaha and Disappointed. The strangest part of YotS was the weird carnival aesthetic that permeates the entire thing for some reason, but I'd argue that was used to just make the album feel like more of a bad trip than it already did. If Exmil was a descent into madness, YotS is not only embracing, but full on allowing oneself to be consumed by that same madness.
I agree. I've always thought that YotS was a natural progression of everything they had done up until that point. If they never release another project it would be a very fitting last album. The way that they sampled their own previous projects made it feel like everything had come full circle.

@@washablelemon I'm not saying it felt derivative, I just don't think that it was the massive "hard reset" on DG's sound that Fantano says it was. It definitely brought some new to the table but it still felt very Death Grips imo

YoTS is overheated in my opinion
Bottomless Pit is definitely my favorite, glad to see it in the S tier. I weirdly think it's underrated for them
Yea DG fans compare it to the money store but it’s nowhere near as well known, and it’s got some of their best material imo

Bottomless Pit definitely feels like a victory lap. They just did them on the album and it was great.
Am I the only one who finds Government Plates in C to be a travesty?? I brushed it off initially considering how much it’s focused on Andy and Zach but over time I’ve just grown to love it more. It’s honestly an A for me, it melts my brain more and more every time I listen to it.
Kudos for Bottomless Pit in S tier though
The albums I didn't like at first I find myself listening more to now than when they first came out, like The Powers That B, Government Plates and Year Of The Snitch. When The Money Store came I listened to it so much that I kind of hate it now, but when it came out I loved it. And all the albums that I previously mentioned, I DID NOT like when they first came out, but now they're all I listen to.
GP is an esoteric DG pick tbh. Lots of "instrumentals" so people probably don't play it as much like Fashion Week or Interview
Government plates was my second most listened to death grips album listened to it a straight 8 hours a day everyday at school for 3 months
Gov Plates will always be my second favorite to YOTS.
Government Plates is very underrated for those that look to Death Grips for bangers

Very happy Bottomless got S. It’s shown to be one of my favorites over the years. I still remember stumbling across the hot head single version the day it came out.
I think BP is underrated within the fan base which I find interesting because that’s the album I go back to the most
Bottomless Pit is possibly my favorite Death Grips album.
I feel like the production and instrumentals in BP are crazy too. Like in trash, when you take the time to listen all the little details in the production are insane

Okay all good all laughs but... Centuries of damn is one of the best tracks from JD ....... "fuck the sun" is so punk. Ride's flow on this one is insane, and the riff sounds like violins. Can't beat that

Wow, pretty surprised by how low Melon is on the entirety of Powers that B. It cracked the top 50 of his best albums of 2010s. Personally I find NotM to be one of their catchiest, wildest releases. It’s at least A tier for me. Though I agree on the low points of Jenny Death. I now find myself skipping some songs, but that’s mostly to get to On GP quicker, which is a top 3 song in their discography.

@@MaxMax-zo9vq yeah I definitely over-listened to TMS when it came out. I find myself coming back to Exmilitary and Powers that B the most. Exmilitary especially grew on me in recent years. Nothing gets me quite as hype as the stretch of Spread Eagle - Lord of the Game - Takyon.

I want to thank you for introducing me to this band. I saw your review for The Money Store and I was intrigued so I looked it up on Apple Music and Death Grips is one of the most fascinating groups I have ever heard. I’m obsessed now. It’s chaotic and insane and I’m just bummed I didn’t get into them way earlier.

NOTM should be at least in the A Tier. It features their most otherworldly production yet
It's funny how melon says Niggas on the Moon has lost it's power to him and doesn't sound as exciting on repeated listens, but I feel the complete opposite and this album has been growing on me more and more with each listen. I think it's their most experimental and creative album.

Take the very word that we’re talking about now: at one point in history and on some occasions today - it was/is used as a racial slur to insult and degrade people of a particular group. The same word was then adopted by that same group of people to represent an entirely different thing and is now regularly used by the same group of people as a slang word that they decided to interpret as positive and empowering.
Context and the intent of the speaker behind words matter.

I remember holding off on playing NOTM until the physical release, putting my crappy car stereo on full volume and letting it rip on the highway. That album went so hard, the transitions between songs especially were insane. Hard to put it below A/B
Interview 2016 gets an A from me. I can't count the amount of squat sessions I've had at the gym to those songs. One of the most hype instrumental projects ever.

I also got a home loan through The Money Store and I think S tier is a little too high. They were friendly and the interest rates were low, but they were not always responsive and they kept calling me Jim instead of Jon

Government Plates is one of those albums that really grew on me, I would put it in A tier honestly.

Thank you anthony for introducing to death grips but im suprised you put Governent Plates on C tier i listened to it for the first time while playing games and didnt think much of the album, but when i listened to it for a second time while driving on a rainy day i couldnt believe how much more i loved it and didnt release how good it was on my first listen

Crazy to see The Powers That B is one you’ve enjoyed less with time because I’ve had the opposite experience with it. Feels like the one that’s grown on me the most. It’s likely their most challenging album because I did not care for NOTM at first but I’ve come around to loving it.
I mostly agree with the lower half of the list, I don’t come back to Fashion Week or Government Plates much (aside from Pillbox Hat and Birds).

A - NLDW, YOTS
B - The Money Store, Bottomless Pit, Steroids
C - Goverment Plates
D - Fashion Week, Gmail
I really like Powers That B too. In terms of being cohesive and well-conceived I admit that it’s one of their weaker albums, but it’s just so abstract and experimental even compared to their other stuff that I can’t help but love it. To me it’s the project that proves Death Grips is more than an isolated moment in music history, and something that can actually evolve and grow.
Billy Not Really, Voila, I Break Mirrors, Pss Pss, the title track, On GP, the insane closer, all some of my favorite Death Grips songs of all time
YOTS and NLDW over TMS feels wrong considering how influential the latter is

NLDW is my personal favorite, and I agree that it’s stripped back sound definitely let’s Ride shine more than on other records. Also it wasn’t brought up but I feel like it has the most “physical” (I guess is how I would put it) instrumentals of any DG album. I guess pummeling isn’t the right word but there’s something really lean and muscular about the sound palettes, and each track tends to focus on one fucking weird instrumental piece that propels the track instead of barraging you with several instruments/samples etc.
It's a very cathartic album in its performance, it feels as liberating as banging on a drum

Death Grips: Best to Most Best
NOTM is my favourite album of all time. I will sing it’s praise every single day for the rest of my life. Nothing speaks to me more than the absolutely insane lyrics and production.
Surprised but happy to see Bottomless Pit in S-tier. I feel like that was the album where Death Grips tore away the mystique they'd cultivated before and was way more upfront. So the music would live or die off of their musical chops, rather than their image. And they still made a fantastic album.
Niggas on the Moon is S tier, easily my favorite and their most mindblowing album imo. Like sheesh, every single section of every song is incredible.

What’s the most underrated Death Grips song and why is it Artificial Death In The West?
NOTM is S tier easy, but i like footwork music and repetition of vocals to the point where it becomes trance like. the words become what they are in reality, sounds. the repetition allows you to detach any semantic content from them.
Still waiting for Swans Tier List...
