Holland America Koningsdam | Day 5 - Glacier Bay National Park | Alaska Cruise | Visiting Glaciers

  • As we entered Glacier Bay National Park sailing onboard the Holland America Line's Koningsdam, there were so many Sea Otters. If Glacier Bay is on your cruise's itinerary, be sure to be on the look out when you first enter the bay for Sea Otters, Seals and Whales. I was so glad I woke up early and grateful I had my own balcony as I saw so much sea life.
    I ate breakfast in my stateroom as I didn't want to miss a thing, good thing I did as soon after we picked up the National Park rangers I spotted a pod of humpback whales. The scenery with the backdrop of the mountains along with the whales made for some amazing memories and photos.
    I then headed up to the Crow's Nest to check out the National Park Service table.
    The National Parks service does a live Park Ranger commentary from the ships bridge after a certain point, so you get to learn all about the glaciers, wildlife and the ecosystem you're visiting. The “Alaska Native Voices” also have a representative onboard doing live crafting demonstrations and they even host a talk about the history of Glacier Bay in World Stage as this is the traditional and ancestral lands of the Tlingit. If you are wanting to view the glaciers from the Crow's Nest observation area, be sure to come early as it got very busy here.
    The Alaska Geographical Society is also onboard selling some great Glacier Bay National Park souvenirs that are only available during our time sailing through Glacier Bay.
    Soon after we arrived at our first glacier, Lamplugh Glacier.
    During Glacier Bay, Holland America opens access to the bow of the ship for an additional amazing viewing platform to view the glaciers from.
    We then entered the area of Johns Hopkins Glacier.
    Out on the decks, Holland America also offers hot Dutch Pea Soup, so be sure to try some!
    After seeing some seals on some icebergs in the distance, I came across some more sea otters and a couple bald eagles perched on some icebergs as we approached the stunning Margerie Glacier and the Grand Pacific Glacier in the Tarr Inlet of Glacier Bay.
    Glacier Bay does have a limit on how many ships can enter per day, which makes visiting Glacier Bay that much more special.
    It was then time for lunch at the Dining Room as we passed by Reid Glacier.
    I then headed up to the Crow's Nest again to relax for a little while before afternoon tea back at the Dining Room.
    As we were finishing tea, I saw some porpoises! Our visit to Glacier Bay National Park with Holland America started at just before 6:00am until around 5:00pm, which made for a great day viewing the glaciers and sea life. Finally I caught this photo from my stateroom of two otters holding hands as we departed Glacier Bay.
    After today's excitement I was actually pretty tired after waking up so early and felt like having a chill evening. It was “Dressy” night, but I settled on pizza and a movie at the Lido Pool.

    I am enjoying this series on your Alaska cruise. I have watched a few other series and like that you do not take pictures of persons eating their food. I like that you take pictures of the ship and letting us see the beautiful scenery. Thank you!

    Thank you for this awesome video. I really enjoyed it. I’ll be sailing the Koningsdam Aug 26 so I’m excited!! What month did you go and how do you get on the bow of the ship? This will be my first time on HAL. Unfortunately I don’t have a balcony. I purchased this last minute and I have an ocean view.

      Thanks so much for watching and happy to hear you enjoyed my video. This was filmed on May 28th to June 4th, 2022. I hope you have a great cruise, the Koningsdam is a beautiful ship and Glacier Bay is amazing! They open the bow on Deck 5 forward only on the scenic cruising in Glacier Bay.

    The view from the Bow looks very uncrowded, I've heard stories of wall to wall people, was this unusual?

    • @WanderlustJourney
      @WanderlustJourney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes the bow can get crowded, this was filmed back in 2022, Alaska cruises have been much busier since then.

    Pretty shots! When booking a balcony cabin, is there a better side of the ship for glacier views or do both sides get equal views?

    • @WanderlustJourney
      @WanderlustJourney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! The ship does a series of turns so each side of the ship will see the glaciers in Glacier Bay!
