For the second technical deep dive, my patrons selected Encircle (2022) as the piece they wanted analysed. This piece presented some really unique challenges for me as I'd never attempted such a large but also intricate tree before. In this video, you can see how it took awhile to figure out what the ideal process was for creating the tree and then how that process developed as the canopy progressed. I hope you guys will find this insight into my learning process helpful!

Most people truly underestimate the emotional roller coaster ride it is creating new artwork, constantly trying new techniques and styles. Your work truly speaks volumes!!!

I adore drawing trees. I find them so relaxing because unlike drawing human bodies and faces, even if I make a mistake copying a tree, it is forgiving as people will not spot the mistake at all unlike when I make a mistake in drawing a portrait where making a mistake is huge in a portrait.
I adore these types of video's that you share on how you do what you do. For me it is gold and I drink this up like water in a desert. They are truly valuable information for me. Thank you so much for sharing. This will be quite useful next time I will tackle a drawing with a tree. Great work Jono!!!

This is my first comment to you so I will tell you, I love your art. I’m not, what you call enthusiastic about what you draw but, I get it.
I personally find trees not as much hard or difficult as it is tedious to do to get it right. I found myself being amazed at the ability for a tree to grow. I’ve drawn lots of trees but, drawing one so large and starting from the roots and you “watch it grow” before your own eyes as you draw it gives you a whole new respect and appreciation for a tree and what all it goes through to give it it’s looks. I have a pencil drawing that I worked on for 3 years and the main part of the front tree took 10 months. Naturally I had to go over many, many more times and hours but, it was worth it. It was the main thing you would notice.

Refreshing to hear you speak about not being confident with a certain process of the drawing. I always catch myself really griping mentally when I'm not as confident somewhere

I didn’t realize how important your erasers were in helping you get the texture in the large areas of your drawings. Really learn so much from each of your videos, all are really enjoyable to watch.
I'm so glad it helped. I've found it's not only about putting graphite down on the paper but also can be really unique to pull it out aswell :)
So great to hear your thinking while you had been working. As a painter, trees are oft' the thoughtlessly stippled afterthought. But in your drawings, you never have such luxuries. You inspire me to want to paint a tree with that level of detail.

Thanks very informative. Maybe it's just me, but I think I have an unorthodox approach to art sometimes. I see what I want to draw and I just do it. I don't put much thought into it outside of coming up with the concepts. It just flows. I've always been like that since I was 3. I didn't know what technique I was doing until my art teacher explained it to me back in high. But by then, I've been drawing practically my entire life. Then when I went to art college, the flood gates open I was introduced to a lot of art content from illustrations to sculptures to digital design. Again thanks, this was informative also. I love watching artists and their techniques.
Your patience and persistence are admirable - much of art (especially when rendering realistic detail) is repetitive and boring. It takes mastery to keep going and get everything as perfect as you do. Congratulations on your fine artwork

I'm so happy I found an artist that uses the same medium as me. You have no idea how hard it's for me to find someone that uses pencil when I want to learn something. It's always paint or digital art. But ty for teaching me how to get really dark blacks. I have no idea why I haven't thought of grinding 9B graphite stick to dust?

Thinner papers will often fail under too much manipulation and then you have nothing. Wonderful video.

It would really help in these tutorials if you had links to the equipment you use…the different mechanical erasers, the lead you use in your mechanical pencils (size and grade) etc

But can someone help me with one thing. When I draw with a pencil and press a little harder, it creates a kind of shine. This can look a bit strange if you look at the picture from a certain angle. Do artists like this have this "problem" too and only film with appropriate lighting conditions? I would be very grateful if someone could help me! 🙏

What do you use to protect your work when it's done? Some kind of matt lacquer spray?
How do you transfer the drawing to the paper? do you use grid or photo projector for tracing? Thanks
He actually just sketches it out from photos. At least that's what he did in most of his drawings
My difficulty with drawing trees on proportions my trees never seem to stay on the paper lol.
Drawing the tree itself the trunk and branches to me is the easy part the foliage is a little harder I can do it with shading but then it won't be very detailed or as detailed as I would like.
For me I start very light and then go very dark I kinda block it all out very lightly
Keep in mind the grade of shadows I want to use shade them all in very lightly.
And go from there keeping in mind where I'm going to put the highlights.
But then again a lit of the time it can get messy. Every have one of theos day's where you feel really confident so you let yourself flow and work as fast as your hand want to take you and later you find out you made a mistake but it's to late trying to fix it will most likely destroy it.
Yes that can happen to me a lot. Lol
