for the price of this new DSL line i think you cant go wrong with them .with an EQ in the loop and OD in front you can get any sound you want from these amps.
Thanks for demoing this. I agree, they do a Plexi better than the origin with the right settings. A JHS morning Glory and this amp to me is just like the classics Plexi. Although tubescreamers work decently. If this amp had MIDI like the 40, which is combo only, this would be the ultimate amp for me. It's still great though. Might pick one up soon.
Yesterday was looking for plexi sounds and put almost the same settings on classic and ultra channels. Eq are different because I have a dsl20cr with a creamback 65. It's a keeper.
Fantastic demo! Everybody else just max out the gain when demoing these! Thanks! sounds great! I was thinking of using one of these with a Suhr reactive load IR in my homestudio setup. For classic rock guitar sounds.
I really liked the tones you were getting. I couldn't hardly hear a damned thing you were saying though. I have the same amp but I run mine through an Egnater "Vengeance" 4×12" with Celestion G12-H75's that were custom voiced for a tighter bass response according to the Egnater site. I also use an MXR Six-Band EQ with 18db Boost/Cut. Personally I think the only reason people have any problems with these DSL's is them seven letters on the back, "Vietnam". Personally, if Marshall wants to sell me a great amp for $500 I'm gonna take it and be thankful!!!
Yes, sorry, I'm not good at making vids! I currently own all 3 of the Studio series heads. I still have my DSL20HR and I enjoy it just as much. The SV20H does the plexi thing a lot better but for the money I'm a big fan of the DSL series. The SV and the DSL are my favorites. My favorite speakers to use with the DSL are greenbacks or creamback 65's.
My Egnater cab is birch ply and Celestion loaded. Sweetwater was selling them about a year ago for like $499 or some insanely low price. I have a Mesa Rectoverb-25 head with a 1×12" slant cab that I haven't used in about as long... Lol I'd love to get a Studio JCM-800 but I can't justify the cost since I rarely gig anymore.
It's not just you. I have a DSL40 and it does a great Plexi sound(esp with the volume pushed up). I agree with Johan though, to really NAIL that sound would take Pulsonic Green Backs. Speakers are sooo important! I'm pretty happy just getting it close though
Thank you for this great demo! - Not sure, but the Super Lead was a Plexi, right? And DSL stands for Dual Super Lead, right? Ver probably the DSL has some modifications, but good to know, that it still has the roots in :-). - BTW: Nice guitar. I like the dull red. - Keep on rockin'!
hello does the dsl 20hr have a headphone in to use it at night when all is sleeping already ^^ planning to upgrade my SS amp. can’t decide between the new dsl series or origin series or the new fender hot rod IV. btw. love your reviews ^^
I know the dsl 20 cr does. They just dropped a new line of DSLs. Be sure to check those out. Look for the CR version. I think I has a few new features, headphone out one of them
Did you play them both? I notice everyone is paralyzed by the choice before the trying them out phase. The origin 20 is badass but what I wanted from it required stompboxes and etc. And then it was a one trick pony setup that way. The dsl will do the jtm45-the 70s superlead sounds and modern marshall tones. So its definitely more of a blank canvas. You can look at it this way with the origin 20 you are trying to replicate what people did in the 70s and 80s with older marshalls which involves cranking it or you can find your own sound wiith the dsl.
For volume - 900, for modern high gain - DSL, for clean - probably the 900. BTW, the 900 was sitting their just temporary. That rig usually has a JCM 2K DSL 50 head on it. It had to go to the shop for a while. Currently, the 20HR sits on top of my creamback loaded Bogner 2x12 at home. I love this amp for mid to high gain playing at home. The 900s do actually sound pretty good but like most older Marshalls you have to crank em. That 900 likes the volume on about 7 which is VERY loud!
I was so disappointed with the Origin. Marshall really missed it with that amp. It's OK for plexi style crunch rhythm with a dist pedal in front of it and cleans up nicely when you roll your guitar volume back but it just doesn't have the balls for any kind of soloing. If they had designed the circuit a bit hotter it would have been perfect, so now I'm looking at getting the DSL instead. It's apparently really popular because they're all on back order right now.
@@BigTyronieEven cranked with a high quality dist pedal in front of it, I couldn't get it to grind. I did discover recently that there is a really good mod for the Origin which gives it a significant increase in clarity and gain - even at lower output volumes but I had already long since returned it. Per the problem w ear piercing db's, I use an EL84 based 15 watt combo for smaller venues - the monoprice stage right amp made in China. Yeah, it's a laughable goofy cheesy name but for $249 you can't beat it (they're on back order right now). I replaced the Chinese tubes with JJ's and the speaker with a Warehouse Reaper (G12H 30). This amp has a reverb tank, an effects loop and unbelievably GREAT tone in spades at a fraction of the output volume of a Marshall 50 watt. With the gain and volume knobs half way up and a high quality dist pedal in front (i.e. Wampler Pinnacle) this thing sounds very close to a dimed up 1975 JMP without the ear piercing db's. It's a very tweekable circuit because in addition to bass, mid & treble controls it also has a tone knob on it. The sweep in the control knobs are wide enough to really help you dial in the tone you want. While it will take you into JCM / EVH territory with the right dist pedal it's sweet spot is classic rock JTM / JMP tones. I use a mahogany strat with a high output alnico HB in the bridge so this rig gives me everything; at about around 3 on my guitar volume it cleans up very nicely, especially when using single coils to get that SRV tone, at 5-7 I get great crunch rhythm on the HB and with my guitar volume dimed, solos cut right through the mix. For larger venues I have a 50 watt Marshall 1986 bass head clone.
That sounds fantastic, I was really hoping the Origin would be better than how some of the demos have it sounding. Would the DSL20HR be able to do a good early Tool (Opiate/Undertow) sound? Edit:Forgot to ask; what speakers or cab are you running it into?
I know this is an old post and hopefully you figured it out by now but he was trying to demonstrate how to get Plexi tones from both channels, therefore it would sound the same. I promise you that ultra gain channel has more gain than any sane person could ever need!!! I own one so I'm speaking from experience. These things are little beasts!!!
The DSL copies a Plexi and crunch better than the Origin. The DSL hands down better at high gain. The Origin amps are disappointing in my opinion. They have a nasal mid quality that I personally don't like. If you run an eq pedal it helps them substantially, but I would save up a little more and get the DSL. It's just a better sounding more versatile amp imho. There are better options for less money than the Origin. One is the Monoprice Stage Right SB20 50watt head for $439. Another would be the Bugera V55HD 50watt head for $499. The Electro Harmonix Mig-50 is a bit more at $670. All three of those options get you more watts, versatility, and just as good if not better build quality. Opinions are like cars and your milage may vary.
Solif rhythm playing. I've seen that metal guitarists have a very different idea of what a "Plexi tone" is compared to a blues player. Makes since since you have everyone from Malmsteem to Jeff Beck using it. Every hero has a different sound.
That is a stock PRS S2 standard 24. Absolutely love that guitar. I picked it up at the store and strummed two chords and said: Oh, this is going home with me today!
What the hell is a plexa? It’s plexi as in plexiglass. You only had 50+ years to get the name right. Luckily you got the tone right so I’ll give you that.
I had a problem with mine when using my looper through the fx loop. If looping a clean track and switching to Ultra for a lead the volume dropped way down. When looping a dirty phrase and switching to the classic channel the loop got way loud! Anyone else?
johno doh I did send an email off, we'll see if anything comes back. Mean while found out that the loop is before either of the two channels rather than between the preamp and power amp sections of the amp... That doesn't fully make sense in my mind either though. I'll take a couple of cables and my looper to GC when I return it and try out the dsl combo that's on the floor there. Thanks for the suggestion.
Left after the third "plexa"....dude. it's plex"e", as in Plexiglas. Because....well, Google that shit...Plexiglas is relevant. There literally is no such thing as plexa.
Here is a link to the Webster's dictionary for you. There is a speaker icon you can click in which it will give you an audible pronunciation of the word "plexiglass". Notice when you listen to it you do NOT hear an "e" sound. I am one of the few who actually pronounce it right. BTW, I pronounce it as "Plex - " ih" not "A". To help on your education today, I will also let you know how to pronounce "Reverb". See that first "e" in Reverb? Pronounce it the same correct way as in "plexiglass" and you will have learned how to pronounce two words today! An eq in the fx loop works wonders too if it has some db boost.
I like these DSLs and the silver jubilees above all other Marshall amps. The dsl is phenomenal even compared to jvm and some other ones.
you can get a DSL 100 for $700 less than the Silver Jubilee Studio 25
Now that I've played them the dsl and the origin, I'm liking the dsl by far.
Thanks for showing your settings I have the Marshall dsl 20cr and it now doesn’t sound like angry bee’s!

I just got a brand new dsl20hr and played it for the first time this morning. Glad I picked it up.
I'd love to see a DSL20HR vs JCM900 shootout
The Origin 50 is no joke. Surprised me really. Marshall will sell a ton of these to the old guys like me that love that old Plexi tone.
JMP-1 is great... I like the idea of the Origin series and really want them to be successful, hopefully your 50 watter is a positive surprise :)
I liked the DSL more!

Played the Origin at the store and there was basically no gain at all
That's because you gotta crank that master volume up and/or engage the boost
Dominic Paraan I also thought that the Origin just didn’t have that much gain though.
I played one everything turned to 10 and theres gain there. You cant turn the volume to 9 oclock and expect fluid gain....
Great demo! Sounds great! Now I want one!
That DSL head destroyed the JMP-1 preamp for a good tone!
Sounds killer, bro!!!

Yes. Add in the diezel vh4 pedal and it's dead on lateralus tone.
Origin has a VERY small brittle sound. I have a Blackstar HT20mkii and those amps eat that alive. The DSL line is better.
