    The fact they are in the top division with that model is an incredible achievement. Especially when basically all the other clubs have a full time set up in that league. From what you see results wise to teams don't get it easy when they play them away despite the league table looking the way it does.

    Ciaran Bourke a member of the Dubliners (my favourite band) went to this university to study Agriculture but he dropped out after one year having spent all his funds on alcohol. He then joined the band and went onto be successful.
    I also played this team on Fifa15 where they were the worst rated team on the game and took them to winning the champions league beating Liverpool and Barcelona during their peaks.

    UCD were actually playing in the 1st Division (2nd Tier) when they played in the Europa League in 2015/16. They qualified due to their fair play record being one of the best in Europe the previous season. They've generally been a bit of a yo yo club in recent years and their attendances would be one of the lowest in the league even by Irish standards. They also use the ground for rugby a number of games in the Women's Rugby World Cup were played there in 2017.

  • @cillianfitzmaurice4147
    @cillianfitzmaurice4147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    UCD are a great club here in Ireland, alot of the leagues greatest players made their breakthrough at UCD. The likes of Ronan Finn, Greg Bolger, Liam Scales, Robbie Benson etc are just some of the big names that began their career at the club. Their fan base is quite small with most of their home attendances coming from away support particularly when the bigger clubs come to play. The facilities they have on offer for the players are world class being based on the huge university campus. As a Shamrock Rovers fan my self I always enjoy visits to the UCD Bowl. Great video Sam looking forward to some more, You will probably notice in your time here that football is very under appreciated in Ireland unless you are talking about the premier league

    I found this story to be strange and fascinating. Here in the US college/university sports are STRICTLY segregated from the professional leagues until an athlete chooses to sign as a professional, at which time they can no longer play for the school. The amateur status of the players is fiercely guarded by the schools (and the NCAA, the governing body for amateur sport in the US). The schools offer free, or reduced, educations in exchange for being able to make money off their athletes efforts. There is HUGE money in amateur sports here in the country (bordering on Usury) and the schools do what they can to rake it into their coffers.
    The professional leagues then recruit players from the collages, using the schools to develop the players outside of direct involvement. This is one reason why the Academy system has taken so long to develop in this country. MLS was relying on the collegiate system to supply players, rather than invest directly and develop their own homegrowns. The growth to an academy system has been glacial, but has developed (no pun intended) momentum in recent years. The system still needs time before maturity, and what that will mean for those college players hoping to turn pro is still uncertain.
    This is the United States, we have a habit of walking before we bother studying how to crawl. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Larne FC in N. Ireland are and interesting team. Founded in 1889 and plays its home matches at Inver Park. They were a 2nd division midtabe team form many years with not much hope for advancement. After being taken over by Purplebricks co-founder Kenny Bruce in October 2018 the club finally lifted the 2018-19 NIFL Championship title. This was the club's first ever senior tier league title and first senior honour since lifting the Ulster Cup in 1988. In 20/21 Larne won eurpean playoff's and got to be in the UEFA Europa Conference League 1st qualifying round where they beat Bala town from Wales, AGF Aarhus from Denmark and lost to F.C. Paços de Ferreira from Portugal in the 3rd round (they would have played Tottenham in the next round). They were able to win the playoff's again this year for the 2ns\d time ever and they will play St Joseph's F.C for Gibraltar soon.

    A name that I will always remember ( along with Fortuna Sitard) from Everton's run to winning the 1985 European Cup Winners Cup.....To put that 0-0 draw into persepective, Everton won the League, EWCWC and missed out on a treble by losig the FA Cup final 1-0 to United...........So, that's a great achievment for UCD.
