If Jesus Is God, Why Didn’t He Know Everything?: The Mark Series pt 56 (

  • People have been using this verse of Scripture to deny the deity of Christ for a long time. in reality, it's actually a beautiful way of teaching the deity and humanity of Christ. We will go through it in detail and answer objections while trying to make sure we don't lose the simple and profound teaching of the passage. Jesus didn't know the day or the hour. Why not? Does He know it now? Did the Holy Spirit know it? If Jesus didn't know then how does that bear down on so many today who are trying to figure out the day and hour?
This is part 56 of the Mark Series, going verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark. Today we are in chapter 13:32-37.
Feel free to use my videos in your own gatherings as an aid to studying Scripture.

Did the Holy Spirit know the day and hour?
Somehow I skipped the portion of my notes where I was going to deal with that question. Here are my thoughts.
My answer is that the Holy Spirit does know. This is for three reasons.
    1) the Holt Spirit is expressly said to know what God thinks. “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬
    2) Jesus didn’t mention the Holy Spirit in this passage and it is presumptuous to assume That the Holy Spirit doesn’t know since there are other explanations for why He is not mentioned. Perhaps it has to do with a wedding analogy that is often brought up where a son would build a home and wait for the instruction from his father to go his bride. In the analogy (which could really use a bit more historical support to help strengthen its likelihood since I understand that we are lacking contemporary records of it) the son is purposely kept in the dark about when he will be given permission to go get his bride and start the wedding. This is a beautiful analogy and Jesus does follow up this saying with a parable about a sudden wedding in Matthew 25. Perhaps then the Holy Spirit is not mentioned in order to preserve the analogy and not to suggest the Holy Spirit doesn’t know. A second explanation to consider for why the Holy Spirit is not mentioned is to say that “Only the Father knows” is a qualified “only”. It is “only” in relation to humans, the angels and the Son. It is not “only” in relation to the Holy Spirit.
    3) Jesus has a particular reason and way that He can “not know” something. While He is God He is also human. This is not the case with the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit doesn’t know something then I wonder how that can be. It’s a lot to read into the passage when other simpler explanations are there.
Due to the reasons I just outlined I think we should say that the Holy Spirit knows and always knew the time.

Mike , Older English versions of the bible say, " Only the Father will make KNOWN, both the day and the hour of Christ's return .We can only envision when the Father makes this day and hour known , there will be faithful believers on earth to hear the time , and who will make themselves ready to receive Him in peace . Mike only three beings in all the universe have the characteristics of God , and they are the Father , the Son , and the Holy Spirit .

Hi Mike as far as any records of the Gallaean weddings I don’t have any diffinative resources . May be a starting point could be a video I watched by the same people who did convergence etc which right now eludes me as far as the title they seemed to say they knew and used some info like Jesus started his ministry at the wedding wheee he changed the water into wine and then the flow began. I didn’t pay attention to any resources they might of used but because your in the states maybe you could touch base with these folks and find out if it’s just a fable which I’m more inclined it isn’t as I said and your aware the scriptures talk a lot about a wedding feast especially where end times is concerned . I hope this could be of help because I don’t want to lie to folks but I love encouraging people and myself like 1 Thess 4 admonishes us to do so

The first reason you have provided has many issues, two of which are
      1) You read that verse in Mark based on another book, and you just treat them as if they say the same thing without a valid justification. You can't simply treat them as one single book.
      2) More important, the analogy Paul provided is against what christians believe about thd Trinity as whole! How?
Paul was likening the Holy Spirit with the spirit of a person. And if this's the case, then we know that the spirit of a person is not a person by itself, rather it's a component that makes (one person) with other components. Therefore, that spirit eventually is not another person that it has its own authority, mind, and will. However, according to Christianity Trinity consists of three separate persons. Each one of them has its own authority, mind, and will.
Moreover, according to Paul's analogy, we can say that Jesus has his own spirit as well becuase Jesus is a person. Also, because the Holy Spirit is a person, then He has his own spirit. Consequently, the concept of Trinity is going to fall down.
Finally, let me ask you, Pastor Mike.
If had been a simple jew in the first century and heard Jesus say "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father", would you have had a second thought that his saying is something else other than what the text says clearly? Honestly?
      Thank you.

In Matthew 9:2 Jesus himself forgives sins. Not only that Jesus knew the thoughts of men in the following verses.
I’d say that’s a pretty big claim to be God. Jesus is revealed to us throughout scripture. And if you read the entirety of scripture and still believe Jesus never made a claim to be God, then nothing will convince you. Jesus is very plainly God, for who can forgive sins apart from God. On this we agree, and if Jesus said from his own mouth he forgives sins, then you walk knowingly rejecting God as he is fully revealed through his word.

Not to wait for the ”big thing” to happen, being discouraged from the waiting, but rather making the waiting meaningful. The most known poem here in Sweden, starts like:
”The sated day is never first.
The best day is a day of thirst.
Yes, there is goal and meaning in our path

God bless. Paul said the fullness of deity dwelled bodily. Please understand that Jesus is all God. For you to say he didn't know something is unintentionally blasphemous. Logically your stance doesn't hold. The bible says Mary didn't "know" a man it doesn't mean she literally didn't know. Put this together with the context in acts it is about authority. The Son and Father are one and they know everything.

But like christ, I trust him with my future. Can you imagine the strength it took for jesus not to use his abilities. I believe when i wake up I'm doing it for the lord. God's using us when we don't know he's using us. I've had people tell me they wanted what I had and I had no idea of what they were talking about, but God show them something through me.

Genesis personifies the “Holy Spirit” as a being that broods over the earth during creation.
Genesis also says that God WALKED with Abraham; and also that the Word of the Lord gave VISIONS to people who later claim to have seen things.
I’d advise looking into the scholar Michael Heiser, he goes more into the linguistics of the languages and thinking about the context as it was written for the Israelites of the day.

    • @andriod090
      @andriod090 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Desire Of All Nations Mhmm. The context of the Bible forces a view of a personified Spirit that hovers over the earth. You see the same language in reference to God brooding over Israel in Numbers 10, or being “overshadowed” or hovered over by the Holy Spirit in Luke 1.

@@viviennebaptiste I'm sorry that a fake gospel led you further from the truth.
You, and I, being made in His Image, proves how He works. Humans are made of Soul, Spirit, and Flesh. The godhead teaches that Yahweh is also these three things; but because it's still Yahweh, it's one being with three different personifications.
You also make the claim that no where in the bible does it claim that Christ is Yahweh, and I beg to differ. His name, for example, means "Yahweh is salvation." He claims to be the same "I am" that led the Israelites out of Egypt (something the Angel of THE NAME did), or the "I am" before Abraham.
I'd also like to point out that the bible also says that no one has seen God at any time, but Christ is how we see the visible image of the invisible God.
Islam is *not* the way, and I urge you to study from people who actually want to teach the *Gospel*, not what they want to teach. The message of the bible is clear; but humans have put greed before His Word, thus you get the tampering that scholars denounce.
You also made the claim that if something isn't 100% true, it's a lie. I agree with this, however I must ask you something, as a Muslim:
If Allah deceives people - those who saw Yahushua die on a cross - but it was actually Judas the betrayer, wouldn't that make your god deceitful?

Where does this idea come from? I have searched for sources from the second temple period but I have found none so far. The idea seems to trace back to a paper written by Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum but when asked he has provided no specific literary references to such a wedding tradition in the first century. It has been presented by some in recent years to support a pre-trib view but I am not inclined to accept it as fact without seeing specific Jewish literary sources that describe it in the 2nd temple period.

Bill Johnson’s book Heaven Meets Earth sounds Kenosis-y to me lol. Aside from multiple contradictions that purposely muddy the theological waters of his points, he mentions Jesus being God who then in becoming human left His deity behind to show us that what He did on earth was possible for us to do too. Using Philippians 2:7 as a reference, with lots of convenient ellipses.

I wonder how Mike would respond to this. The following quote is what makes me think that Bethel might be teaching full-on Kenosis. At the beginning of chapter 2 of When Heaven Invades Earth (which is still one of the most popular books at Bethel. I believe it's still used as a textbook in BSSM) Bill Johnson says the following:
"Jesus could not heal the sick. Neither could He deliver the tormented from demons or raise the dead. To believe otherwise is to ignore what He said about Himself, and more importantly, to miss the purpose of His self-imposed restriction to live as a man . . . He had NO supernatural capabilities whatsoever! While He is 100 percent God, He chose to live with the same limitations that man would face once He was redeemed . . . He performed miracles, wonders, and signs as a man in right relationship with God...not as God."
This quote is a big part of why I kind of hold Johnson in the "I don't know" category as to whether he's really a believer.

Mike, I respect you and listen to you all the time. There is something that I can't reconcile. This is multiple times now that I've heard you talk about speaking about the End Times. I agree with what you said about people being paranoid and irresponsible. I also agree with you in the fact that we only have one life and should live like Jesus is coming back tomorrow. I think if we knew when Jesus was coming back, we would not be living by faith, and without that it is imposable to please God. Why then, does Jesus bother with the book of Revelation? If we aren't suppose to focus on or be aware of the seasons of the rapture or judgement day, then why does Jesus give us that book? Is it possible that the disciples weren't supposed to know the day or hour or seasons like most of the prophets in the OT didn't know the time of Jesus' first coming but there is a generation in the future that should be aware of the times they're living in? I guess what i'm asking is, is there a responsible way of looking for signs of... say the antichrist figure.... and being prepared for things... as opposed to being prepared in a general sense because there are always people in this world who are opposed to Christ?

I'm only basing this off when jesus ascended he told his disciples that it's good for him to go. When he goes he will send the comforter aka "holy spirit". Before Jesus it was just God. Then God came to us as Jesus. then he sent the holy spirit to keep the connection open. That is how Jesus lives in us while preparing our home in heaven.

No, God knows everything, so Jesus KNOWS what will eventually happen because He is God. BUT, and here is the mistake almost everyone makes, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit have their own unique personas or minds also, THREE.......IN...........ONE, thus God simply has chosen not to make up His mind until the moment He decides to send Jesus to get the bride yet. He waits for his Wrath to get filled up. Jesus knows what is coming, He just doesn't know the Day nor the Hour that the Father will say, GO GET YOUR BRIDE.

142 Do you think that you will enter the garden *while Allah has not yet known those who strive hard from among you, and (He has not) known the patient.*

The difference between allah and the one true living God ( Jesus Christ ) is allah does not love the unjust ( verse 140 ) and Jesus Christ ( God ) does. And Jesus Christ is the first to rise from the died and conquer ( have victory over ) death.
For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: ( 1 Peter 3:17,18 )
Jesus Christ suffered and died for the sins of the unjust ( that's us ). That's why he asked the Father to forgive because we no not what we do. We are justified by Grace through faith alone because He ( Jesus Christ ) is the justifier, the sin barer. Took our sins upon himself and for our pardon. By his stripes we are healed, he ( Jesus Christ ) ( the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world ) died to set the captives free. Only Jesus Christ was/is/and always will be the Just one. We are the unjust saved by Grace through faith. Our spirits are quickened because we ( the unjust ) put our trust ( belief ) in the one true living God ( Jesus Christ ). It is not of our own doing lest any man should boast. ( Ephesians 2:8,9 ) Grace, Mercy and Peace be with you.

Still on 8:23, the third one makes sense. I've thought about it before, but I've always held on to the second one as a default... But thinking about it now, there's only so much the human brain can contain, so while the fullness of knowledge resides in Christ's divine form, the human form might only have access to certain portions (all at His and The Father's behest by the way).
Looking forward to the breakdown in the rest of the video
At 25:35 now, bullseye!... and yes, the Dash example is cheesy, but good😂... I also liked the bench press example😂... Wish I'd tuned in for this when it was live, but I was occupied at the time, and my signal wasn't so good

@@RealImaginGaming I think you misinterpreted... I didn't say Christ is devoid of any knowledge, He knows all. I'm only saying (just as Mike said later in the video) that in His human form, i.e. while operating as His divine self IN a human body (just so we're clear, I'm not suggesting modalism), He in accordance with the Father's will might have chosen to give attention to specific bodies of knowledge at different points in time

Then why not just put that in the bible when translating? Why make it so secretive and confusing. Yes, I'm a fairly knew believer and one reason I never wanted to read the bible is because i thought it would cause me to not believe because I knew there would be so many questions and I'd have to become a biblical scholar to try to understand it. As you can tell, I'm somewhat frustrated with it. Part of me just wants to read the bible and take it at face value without having to dig and dig to find a deeper answer.

But I also think that we don’t necessarily need to dig that deep to understand what is the most important message of the bible: who Jesus was, why he came, died and what it means for us. I can’t even have a normal conversation with her without her bringing it up. I’ve been at a low point in my faith the past few months. I know what she’s saying isn’t true but it gets in my head.

One other thought. I think the Son limited His knowledge of the day and the hour and that this fits with the pattern being drawn upon from the customs of a traditional Jewish marriage. The Father sends out the Spirit to gather a bride for the Son. The Son goes to prepare a place in the Father's house. The Father sends the order out for the Son to go receive His bride unto Himself. I guess we could say that within the godhead it was decided to be this way as a picture to us of how the Son had submitted Himself to the authority of the Father in this timing of gathering His bride. I think it is referring specifically to the coming of the Lord (rapture) rather than the 2nd coming with His bride. Just my thoughts. Thank you so much Mike!
