    I think Linus has a much more serious electrical problem in that rack than he knows. Blown fuse on the Fiber Optic Thunderbolt repeater, network switch exploded when he nudged the wire, now this as well. I’d be checking the wiring going all the way back to the panel, sometimes they accidentally mix up the wires and put either the hot or neutral onto the ground. From what I remember the switch blew up right as his hand touched the side of the rack so I’m leaning towards something to do with the grounding.

    • @TehButterflyEffect

      Water cooling is air cooling with extra steps. It used to be better than air but with modern heat sinks that problem has gone away.

    • @ProcessedDigitally
      @ProcessedDigitally ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@TehButterflyEffect water has its advantages. you will have less spikes of high temperature from a sudden increase of cpu utilization for example compared to a similarly 'speced' air cooler as water's thermal capacity allows it to absorb and move a lot of heat from the cpu even before it reaches the radiator to cool off - assuming you do not have the fans blasting 100% on your air cooler of course. (basically liquid cooling can be quieter vs same rated tdp air cooler). If you have a silent or balanced fan profile you will easily see the difference in spike temps air vs liquid. However with liquid cooling - when the cpu drops to idle from high load it takes slightly longer for the temps to fall compared to air - as the liquid is still carrying past heat...

      @@luanlmd The problem is it's in his house and he doesn't want it to be noisy. And if it's air cooled you have to somehow get rid of the hot air out of the house and bring in cold air at the same time. • @TehButterflyEffect

    • @GuyGamer1
      @GuyGamer1 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tons of vents and airflow ends up being quieter than a noise dampened steel box. IIRC the meshroom is the quietest case you can buy because you can load it up with a bunch of ultra low speed fans.

      Same here. It was difficult to find a new case *without* a window or full glass side and *with* two 5.25" bays. I was tempted to relieve my 23 year old "Megatower 2000" case from printer stand duty and build my new PC in its cavernous interior that has a total of 12 drive bays.
      My first 100% new PC build was a 300Mhz Pentuim III in that case in 2000. I was fed up with cramped mini and mid towers so I bought a server case. It was the only computer I've ever given a name.
      One thing I did with it was install a powerful AC fan in the front with a relay to turn it on. I opened up the space at the bottom of the case front as much as possible, cleaned up the back side of the few vent holes there are, and cut away part of the lower side edges against the case. I cut away the punched grille in the front and opened the hole to the full, non-round shape of the fan inlet. Finished off with a baffle in the plastic front so it could only pull in outside air.
      I had to keep small items away from it or they would get sucked in. 😮 It wasn't noisy because the fan was all metal, made for cooling something large, and the 110VAC motor had tons of power.

      Except that people that tall are usually not happy about it. They have trouble finding clothes that fit well, they have trouble fitting in tight spaces (cars, door frames), and it's also more difficult to look buff, because their muscles are longer and it's harder to build them, so they usually look either skinny or chubby.
      I'd say both ends of the spectrum are bad. And while I'd love to be 5'11" or 6', I'd rather be 5'7" than 6'4". Most things in life are actually easier when you're short.

      They want it to break, that is the point. Everything LTT does is toward the end goal of generating content, the more complicated something is, the more potential for it to go wrong, and the more potential LTT style content they can milk out of it.. honestly im surprised people are not bored of the same formula repeated over and over at this point.... Linus "comes up with" some cool idea. The whole team works tirelessly for days to implement it. A few weeks late it breaks and we get a video of the aftermath... im not throwing shade if you enjoy this, but it is literally tech reality TV, its like watching Pawn Stars or something like that

I mean, who else would be crazy enough to make a mobile pc setup for their minivan or chill their system with an air conditioning unit. It's humorous but it doesn't forgo the educational part. If you want real tech advice there are many more channels that are as popular as LTT, but LTT itself is just a nice watch whenever.

Turns out Amazon repurposed that listing for an entirely different brand's power supply which definitely didn't have compatible cables.

    One thing I like about this video is seeing everyone at Labs doing their part. I just find is awesome that when Linus, one of the main bosses and visionary of the Labs, sees his employees who he gave jobs in this exact department help him when he has issues when their jobs is to find the issues in tech today through rigorious testing.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is. In most undercover boss episodes(reality tv being fake though), I see a boss go into a workplace only to find it in sambles cause it's a crappy workplace with crappy stuff going on usually involving good people employeed to do this crappy job due to their crappy conditions. And even if this supposed boss wasn't "undercover", the employee most likely doesn't want to be anywhere near this person who created this pile of crap.
    Meanwhile, Linus creates a Labs to literal test what most companies say they test without sharing most of it publicly. So being an internet channel solely based on showing tech in a public manner, Linus helps push forward this Labs idea. Makes it reality to help others. Gets good people jobs in a field they want to specialize in. Then, when he has said problems with his own system like many of us with mostly normal systems. The good people he hired and put value in show him, the boss, how they in return value him.
    Hard to see that nowadays.
    Only time I had that in my life was when I worked at a feed store and both the manager and boss cared for me as I cared for them. Of course, being a mom and pop shop it didn't last long. Which after in my life, I worked for two major corpos and other jobs only to see how much backstabbing done by bad people in positions hurting good people doing jobs that keeps the corpo afloat.
    Just makes me appreciate Linus and everyone being so lax around him. It's rare yet so nice to see.

    If you ever need to drill into a rack case like that, there's an old mechanics trick that always works to keep metal filings out of the sensitive areas:

    The grease will trap and hold all of the filings and make the process of drilling into the metal much faster because it absorbs heat.

    Linus, for cutting metal straight, don't use a 'junior' hacksaw.
    Use the 12" wide blades (32 teeth per inch), with a handle (Bahco has a decent one) to clamp it in.
    Put the blade in 'the wrong way', so it cuts on the pull. (Like a Japanese handsaw)
    Much easier to start a straight cut, and to KEEP it straight.
    Those junior hacksaw blades tend to curve under tension, so your cut can start to wander halfway through.
    Cutting on the pull self-straightens the blade of the larger ones...
    And since the larger blades are less bendy, and are wider, they tend to follow whichever direction you start in
