  • As promised here is our vlog about the beginning of the British canals. We follow the Duke of Bridgewater's plan for a new canal from Worsley to transport his coal to Manchester and thus halving the cost of coal. We then look at its impact. This is our first attempted at a documentary so hope you enjoy it
Don't forget to comment, subscribe and give it the thumbs up if you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching
If you want to find out more about the history of the canals have a look at this excellent video the shows how canals grew and their decline followed by todays boom in leisure boating. Thanks ti Brian Grundy for the link. Its well worth a watch.

I really enjoyed this. Not growing up in Britain, I learned very little of the canal system in school. It was mostly mentioned when talking about those trying to create canal systems in the US to mimic the successes of those in UK and Europe, but of course the timing was wrong as the railroads came along. I saw some narrowboats in the canal in Bath when I first visited the UK decades ago, but that was pre google and pre youtube so my curiosity had nowhere to go other than a few books in a bookstore. My friend I was visiting told me that some lived on one year-round and others used them like RV/Caravans for holiday travelling. I remember standing there looking down at several brightly painted boats and thinking to myself "I wonder what that is like?" My friends wife had no desire to trapse along a wet towpath with toddlers (I wonder why? ;-)) so I could get a closer look and maybe chat with someone, so that was my only glimpse.
I found this VLOG very interesting and would not mind more of each system you travel - and some about the people who were visionary risk takers to get them built and those who just tried to ride along on the new next best thing!
I find the canal systems in the UK and Europe extremely fascinating. It wasn't just transportation, but I think they also changed the places the canals travelled thru. Kinda like Railroads did.

Thank you for your lovely comment. Chris and I have travelled a fair bit of the system now. Have a look at our older vlogs. The worsley vlog tell the story of how it all started and grew into the canal system we have today

Brilliant video as always....love the history...can we have more please.....when I did my City & Guild's building course in 1990, we used sand and lime for our test pieces....when passed, knock it down, clean the bricks and some water and go again....easy....stay safe......

Interesting about how Brindley was successful in using canals to transport coal....he was a visionary...I wonder if anyone has explored the old mine working canals....what a feat of engineering that was....

    Hi Steve
Apart from one mention of the Duke of Westminster instead of Bridgewater, very good. You could have mentioned the 'starvationers' boats shown by representation in the water at Delph so called because they resembled coffins.

A most thorough history of that canal that sparked the Industrial Revolution in England!
Please (for the benefit of non Brits) use a moving pointer or cursor to indicate where and what you talk about on those many maps.
