249 - An Unexpected Change of Plans in Manchester

  • In todays vlog its all change. We had been expecting to head up the Rochdale Locks and onto the Ashton Canal but an unexpected lock closure in Manchester meant that we couldn't go this way and we had to completely change our winter cruising plans.
    We didn't actually film much of the cruise as this is the second time we have travelled on this part of the canal. Instead we stopped off at the Worsley Delph and had an explore there. We hope you enjoy the video.

    ► FAQ
    Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
    A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.

    Nice Video. Back in my old playground area. Not sure what happened to Patricroft, the place I walked on water (mischievous school lunch hour in winter 87 or 88) and the Worsley section looked very clean, normally rusty red from memory. Now if you can do a little

    ARGH! I thought the same "porpoise" and "halibut" jokes... and they hurt even more hearing them come from outside my brain! LOL The variety of areas you've passed through in the last 2 vlogs is amazing, everything from super-modern and highly industrialized & urban to some idyllic old-looking neighborhoods and areas with nice trees... really gives us an idea of how far-reaching & varied the canal network really is. (And you really missed a chance to play "It's A Small World" in the background while ID'ing all those familiar boats!)

    Hello, before I start, I need to warn you this is going to turn into a bit of a ramble. Sorry! My husband and I are really enjoying your vlogs. They are so well put together and informative. We love the historical information, I personally thought vlog 168 was great, and of course we love George. You might be wondering (or not) why I’m only commenting now, on this vlog, and not on number 283. Here comes the ramble... we are friends with a couple, who have holidayed on the canals for years and from 2005 until 2010 they lived on a narrowboat. We don’t know why we waited, but we decided to go on our own narrowboat holiday last year, in October. On their recommendation we went on the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal. Wow, what a beautiful canal, and although we went at the end of October we were blessed with lovely weather, with the only rain on the Friday. We were also very lucky to be homeward bound when the river Usk burst its banks, flooding Crickhowell from where we had hired our boat. We are now (if you hadn’t already guessed) hooked on narrow boating. Over Christmas we binge watched Cruising the Cut and then thought, hmmm... who to watch now? We have been binge watching your vlogs while on lockdown, averaging 4 an evening. We are slowly catching up. We have two sons and I only found out a couple of days ago, that our youngest commented on vlog 282. Jenson Chandler 101, “Do a tour of your cannel boat.” Sorry. My husband is interested to know if you plan on visiting The Wash? And finally, congratulations on completing the silver propeller challenge.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for all that! As I mentioned to your youngest we did a tour of the boat quite early on, but then I think you must have seen it if you’re working your way through from the beginning. Precious little has changed inside the boat since then, mainly lot of dog biscuits in hard to reach places. We do indeed plan to do the Wash, though when has been made a bit of a mystery. Our original plan was to do it early next year, which meant we had to make Boston by November... well that’s been blown all the heck by the pandemic, so while we don’t think the route has changed the odds are it’ll be late 2021 at the very earliest. At 4 a night you’ll catch up soon, hope you enjoy the rest! M&J&G

    Have a look on BBC iPlayer for a 1972 programme called Nairn Across Britain. Episode 2 starts at Worsley and goes to Leeds by canal. Fascinating to see how the canals (and attitudes towards them) have changed. The presenter talks about how canals are just starting to be used by pleasure boats.

    At least once you got out of Manchester proper, the number of moored boats dropped to almost nothing. Progress could thus be maintained without creeping at tickover for miles. Like many parts of the K&A, lovely though that is.
    I've had to get out my Nicholson 'Inland Waterways' map because, up till now I've been able to follow your progress on my 'mind map'. Jo's superb 'Beck Map' is hanging at the 'other' Enthusiastic Hire Boater's house so, reference my Christmas present Nicholson!

    Lovely, thankyou. Worsley Delph very interesting and very pretty - makes me want to see it myself sometime. Lovely Autumnal quality of light and sun, with clouds scudding overhead too - you may have indeed done this before but, like my frequent 20 mile bus trips to the nearest town, every trip is different with changing weather and light. That's the glory of British weather, it rarely stays the same for long and the day lengths vary so much over the year. all the best for 2020, guys! Looking forward to more of your great content.
