  • Original film footage of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse converted into 1080p resolution using Topaz Video Enhance AI and added color with DeOldify. The Galloping Gertie bridge was easily affected by the winds which ended with a collapse.

Galloping Gertie, so named by the bridge builders because of how much they witnessed it flexing during construction. IIRC, the lead engineer warned that it would fail one day, but the state pushed forward anyway. The engineer set up a shack at the end of the span with a camera to capture the failure, which provided most of the footage in this clip.

The original footage from the day of the collapse was filmed in color by a camera shop owner who had access to Kodachrome color film. The black and white version came from newsreels which was more widely circulated.....that one was used here for the purposes of this demonstration and to match the rest of the footage.

Using AI to upscale colorize a very worn out black & white copy of footage that was originally shot at much higher quality and was in color to begin with? I love a lot of what is done with DeOldify, but this is a strange choice, especially since the original color footage is available. A side by side comparison of the original color footage with a DeOldified copy of a less worn out black & white copy would be interesting to see. It would could show how accurate the tech is.

What unit are they referencing? 6 million pounds? 6 million tons? 6 million inches? 6 million grams? 6 million dollars? 6 million hours? 6 million rivets? 6 million sheets of metal? 6 million injuries? 6 million oversights? 6 million liabilities? 6 million headaches? 6 million examples of "6 million..." followed by various units of references? 6 million spaces following this question mark?
