"Tubby" the dog fell into fame when Galloping Gertie collapsed on November 7, 1940. As the only victim of that great disaster, Tubby has earned a special place in the hearts of many. His death symbolizes the drama of that terrible day. All that is known about the unfortunate pooch is here. These few facts are a small but meaningful way to honor his unique place in history.

Even with the "normal" oscillations I wouldn't drive on that!

Indication that a slipping cable band on the North main cable caused the center span to oscillate sideways resulting in span failure.

The fatal torsion that wrecked the bridge on November 7, 1940 after one of two mid span braces placed between the cable and the girder as a temporary securing measure slipped. They were intended only to be temporary braces until permanent brackets could be fashioned. They were placed there at the suggestion of engineer David Steinman, who used them on his Thousand Islands span in 1938 when it started exhibiting wind torsion.

hwyfan - That’s very interesting. If there were modifications that introduced an asymmetry due to a stay slipping or breaking, it is an obvious suspect for initiating the twisting mode. I haven’t read about it anywhere else, though.
According to this article, Steinman offered his services but the offer was turned down:

If you listen closely, you can hear the suspension cables making whipping noises in rapid succession.

Mario Salvadori has written a couple of books on structures for the lay reader which should be in the library of anyone interested in structures.

Roger Huang - It is relatively lightweight and designed to be flexible. A little bit of side-to-side sway is a minor problem. The undulating and twisting modes were not anticipated.

    Is it due to Resonance?

Yes. Feed energy at the natural frequency of oscillation and the amplitude of the response starts growing

Leon Moisseff was not the leading suspension bridge designer of the era. The Tacoma Narrows was in fact the first span on which he was chief engineer and designer. Othmar Ammann was the greatest designer of the era. Moisseff died in 1943, three years after the Tacoma collapse.

hwyfan - It’s odd that Salvadori would get the year of his death wrong, because he was a recognized expert in structures.

I disagree strongly with the idea that it took 52 years to find the cause of the disaster. The concept of alternate vortex shedding was very well known long before 1992. Indeed, it was taught during my time studying Civil Engineering at a UK university in the 1970s. One of several exemplars used in this teaching was the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

he ment it took 52 years for uneducted americans, who propably dont firmly know where to find your UK on a map.

Resonance of structures can cause the failure of many different structures, from wine glasses to tall buildings, and from aircraft to submarines, and very many more structures. To see other structures resonating on my youtube site, Google "carltfross youtube" to access my youtube site.
