Grill table & outdoor kitchen MISTAKES! +Sneak peak of my new grill studio space (do's & don'ts)

  • Thinking of building a BBQ table for your grill and or doing a full blown outdoor kitchen grill studio? Having built three different versions of grill tables for my Kamado Joe's & Big Green Eggs leading into this years project of a complete outdoor kitchen grill studio I share some do's and don'ts when it comes to planning your next project to help make sure its functional, long lasting and meets your needs.
The first outdoor BBQ table I built was for a single Big Green Egg using the table plan from N
aked Whiz which looked great for about 5min and started to show some of the limitations in the construction and materials.
The section grill table I built was for a Big Green Egg large and a Minimax adding some storage space which improved some of the structural issues but didn't solve the longevity issues for the table top.
The third version I installed twin Kamado Joe Classics in a custom made grill table from cedar with a concrete table top. This was my favourite of all the ones I have made, and had I been able to modify it for the big joe I would have kept it.
For 2021, I am in the midst of building an outdoor BBQ kitchen studio that will improve weather protection, lighting and storage. Stay tuned for the complete reveal in a few weeks.

Fantastic idea to share you grill studio experience. Your new project is stunning.
To me the greatest of all is to simply have a roof on top of my grill zone and patio.
Other great advantage when building your zone is (if possible) to have no steps between the house kitchen and your grill.
I saw you have a window behind your new table. I do have it too and mine leads to the kitchen, so it is very fun when we are making pizza for example. A team prepares pizza inside and get cooked outside passing in and out thru this window.
Finally, to ensure your table never loosens, metal square tubes welded together will never! Just need some shelves and a good counter top.

There’s a lot of great advice here. I used 4x4 materials with a 2x4 and plywood base. I left a square recess that was 25x25” below the grill position and filled it with pavers. This dimension allowed me to complete a paver base with only 2 cuts. I am thrilled with your surface advice and I chose granite. It was way easier to cut with a diamond grinder disk than I thought and bonus the circular part of the cut is now a small table. For those on a budget, no worries granite and pavers are frequently available on sites like Craig’s list.

Our new house has a covered space that is plumbed and ready for an outdoor kitchen. In order of importance I need (1) working surface space, (2) storage space, (3) a sink. I'm not going to try to integrate my Classic II into the counter because I've learned (partially due to this channel) that no grill is forever. I could easily see upgrading to a Big Joe or some other grill altogether and it doesn't make sense to customize a counter for the grill I have now. Also from the point of resale, down here gas grills are far more popular than charcoal grills. I don't want to narrow my pool of potential buyers to just people who own 18" circular kamado type grills.

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
      @SmokingDadBBQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

good call, my new space is not going to look as integrated but it will be more versatile for swapping different grills in and out vs. needing to start the entire kitchen over again each time which is a big problem

My 2 cents to add on my cart / table....
All wood was redwood and fastened with stainless screws
When using ceramice / tile as heat stops also under tile was cement board that gives a second move and sink for heat
When placing grill on feet plan on extra height to shelf for air feeding / blower and keep the bottom setting of grill plate as small and tall as posible
With top or prep / set hot stuff here Get that as large as you can and mine was flushed to all top serfaces and cemented / mortared in to make clean up better
And last tip from my build Leave air gaps on surface joints as all wood will move and and needs space to not cause fracures because of warpage

I would try to find some kind of roll-up style fabric blind for the front/sides. Having that guard for poor weather would save your new setup from damage over the years. It would also provide a containment feel that would make cold weather cooks more bearable. A ceiling fan would be a good idea too. Push the smoke out of the peak to avoid smoke damage. Looks great! Best of luck with the remaining steps.

I'd love to have an outdoor kitchen, but our home was basically built by carving a big hole out of the middle of a hill and building a house in it. So the front and large parts of the back yards are hills, and the only "flat" area is outside the back basement door, which would be really inconvenient to go back and forth to from the kitchen inside the house.
My kamado is currently on our concrete front porch which does have a roof over it, so that helps with the weather at least, but I'm looking to getting some kind of long prep table now to replace the cheap $35 card table one I have (I want a long table for rolling out long sheets of butcher paper to wrap brisket etc).
On the grilling at night front, since our porch light has been shorted out for many years now and we've never bothered having it fixed because the flood lights still work, I picked up the tip of getting a head lamp from Jeremy Yoder and that has been a wonderful investment. It's SO much better than trying to hold a flashlight while doing something or having to nag someone in the house to come and hold the light for you.

I recently got my first Joe (Jr.) a few weeks ago. And after struggling to either find a table/bench for it, or the ones I found had a higher price tag than the Kamado Joe Jr. itself… I went ahead and jumped into the DYI wagon using 2x4’s and galvanized joints/connectors.
It was super fun, and I ended with the sense of pride that comes with building something from scratch, but I’m not sure if on the long run It would’ve been a better option to buy the overpriced, pre-built version based on the material cost/time investment factor for an inexperienced woodworker like myself 😂🤣😂.

I've solved one of your challenges... I live in the SF Bay Area. No snow! Seriously, I decided to make a cart for my Joe Jr. for utility and for fun. But sometime next year I intend to create a proper outdoor kitchen on my deck that will incorporate my smoker. I figured this would be a learning experience. This video helps accelerate that learning. I just checked out NatureKast and I think that's great option. They have a dealer down the street. So I'll be following your experience closely. BTW, I'm planning on using a range hood to keep the smoke off the house.

It will be great having the prep area if, for nothing else, making it easier to keep an eye on the temp while you get the food ready. I tend to be slow in the prep, and there has been more than a couple of occasions that I needed to bring the kamado down by 100 degrees to start the cook! Also, I have to say that it is nice seeing a video that isn’t predominantly an advertisement (despite the product placement for the cabinets). I understand that it is a source of income and products, but I liked the channel more before it was primarily “Which is the absolute best product in the world: The Kamado Joe Dooflickey or the Kamado Joe Dooflickey III”.

In the meantime, do you have any recommendations for outdoor storage solutions that would be suitable to store the various Kamado Joe accessories, including larger items such as the JoeTisserie? This would be helpful as I am beginning to take up too much storage space in the kitchen, and I am also concerned about too much humidity for items stored under the Kamado grill and cover (such as pizza stone, deflector plates, etc.). Thank you in advance.

thanks for the comment and for checking out videos. outdoor storage is a life saver for sure. give yourself lots of different sized spots. i put all my half moons in pull out drawers under the joes.
you need a big space for the doejoe, joetisserie and the sloroller storage. when using those you need to store the D&C rack so definitely dont skimp on the space

Are you worried about smoke getting caught in the roof and/or staining it?
Also, what did you use to seal your concrete so it wouldn't stain? Did you have to redo that annually?

Ok… nice never never never build it out of wood 😀, just weld a rohr frame and powder coat it… it saves you a lot of mistakes. Do you have a drawing for de big green egg large for the hole in the table and the distance to the bottom?

The Barbeque setup is looking wonderful…
A question for you - is the door material on your new cabinets composite or wood? I am completing a table now and am about to start work on the doors in a week or two. I was planning on going with a board and batten style to accommodate seasonal wood movement, but I see you have a solid shaker style. If that is wood then I might switch…
Also if you ever want to cast your concrete countertop in place, I just finished using a system by concretecountertopsolutions which worked really well - my countertop was going to be pretty large/heavy so I thought it was going to be very challenging to move it to the table so I went with a cast in place option.

Very nice to see your projects! Someone mentioned and the garden furniture cover really saves the surfaces. I havent seen a sink and a tap, do you have it or water close by? I was looking to have my outdoor kitchen and my wife discovered one from Ikea which had a module with a sink, stainless steel top, structure all powder coated metal. So whenever in the garden, I just connect the garden hose and have water and a sink to wash hands and things. I connected the drain to the sewage pipe. I'm getting a portable induction cooktop, so the trips to the real kitchen are kept to a minimum. Thanks for all the tips and contents!

Doing a design as part of a new house. Would you consider a sink in the table? Would love to be able to prep raw meat and wash hands right at the grill without going inside. Also for cleaning sooty fingers.
What's the minimum overhang you suggest for rain protection? Are you planning to need to refinish the overhang wood periodically (discolouration from soot)?

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
      @SmokingDadBBQ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

for me in canada the winter creates water problems with freezing so i skipped the sink even thought i agree it would be nice to have.
the overhang isn't that large but rain blows in depending on the wind direction and height... so while it might be under 1 foot overhang the safe space is 2-3ft under based on what is getting wet right now when it rains
i stained the top dark to help hide the smoke

    Hi James,
Love you videos very well done!! Also new outdoor kitchen looks amazing. Quick question regarding your kamado placement.. what’s the reason you went with a full open slot vs jus a drop in through the counter style you had before? Is it just for future flexibility in changing the grill. Just seams harder to keep clean and less countertop for dropping stuff. Thanks.
