A couple of thoughts about somethings I might have added: The Fugees, not sure if they weren't considered hip hop for your purposes (which I could understand), but they were influential, also, No REDMAN?!? Tribe Called Quest has got to be higher on the list too. Last gripe is, maybe a Chicago rapper, like Twista or something, but really, a job well done

    • @rociblanco5695
      @rociblanco5695 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more I listen to his music, it's undeniable. He may not be mainstream, but purely in the underground game, he was keeping it real. He was a lyricist lyricist, freestyle battle rapper, a complete package. He had the arsenal to end anyone's career.

      @mgm105 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uncleclem7381 You don’t have to be even close to mainstream to be revolutionary. A rapper could revolutionize the game simply by having a few rappers hear what they do. Domino type shit ya feel? MF DOOM revolutionized the game and he only became famous after his death. He had been doin it since the 90’s. How many listeners you have doesn’t equal your influence.

      @@uncleclem7381 No you proved my point exactly. He was popular underground, but not mainstream. That’s a massive difference. DOOM has way less listeners than Drake or Travis Scott, but still is massively influential. Also you completely ignored the point that DOOM has been revolutionizing rap since the 90’s, before he was even popular underground. Have you ever heard the phrase “Your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper”? That’s what it takes to be influential, not how many people listen to you directly.

No Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Dah Shinin', Aquemini, The Score, Fear of a Black Planet, or Muddy Waters songs just to mention a few on your list, you can throw a dart on a board filled with those albums' songs listed randomly and it would probably be a noteworthy tune from that era, additionally, its hard to condense a rap catalog from the 90s when, there were so many influential albums to choose from.

    This is a decent list. Not a lot to argue with, but I am *still* going to take off two and add two (where you slot these two, I dont care). First, by your own pinned comment, "Each rapper is limited to one spot on this list." So even though it's in a duo, Snoop is here twice so I'm taking off "Gin & Juice". And, while a good song, I'm not sure what the legacy influence of "Shook Ones" was, so that's number 2.
    As for additions, one is hip hop influential, the other mainstream culture influential. First OutKast *has* to be on any 90's influential list. They brought a sound, a vibe, that was lacking in those days. It was either "East Coast", "West Coast", "Miami Bass" or Geto Boys doing their own thing. Only after OutKast did "Southern Rap" really become a thing. I could choose a bunch of songs, but I go with "Player's Ball" as the Kick off.
    The second, though I personally kinda detest the song, has to be "Whoop, There it is" by Tag Team. Though it was contemporaneous with "Whoot There it is" by 95 South, the Tag Team version probably got wider airplay. And thought 'there it is" has been in the lexicon at least since "Peter Piper" by Run-DMC, it took over local vernacular in the 90's due to this song. It *still* gets played in stadiums, movies, and commercials today. That kinda sucks, but it's influential! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
