I imagine that if they had done a space based theme, the design team would’ve taken a page from the Toa Mahri and had the helmets modified to be able to have tubes plugged in, as opposed to a whole host of extra pieces to make a second helmet.

If Lego where to ever bring back hero factory or bionicle The space theme I can for Bionicle I can see them trying to bring back is the red star zombies. But for hero factory I can see the space theme coming more naturally in any of their ways.

Just like you i belive that Surge is an awsome hero, it's a shame that the animated series done him dirty by turning him into a joke character (expecially brain attack)
