For those who don't know, John used to work for Charlie (he was the drum tech for Anthrax). He began recording in 1990, when Exodus hired him to play on two of their albums while their original drummer was on leave. He then would go on to play for Testament, White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Helmet, and the Cult.
He's one of my favorite drummers, but the thought of him playing on my cymbals honestly terrifies me, lol. He's not the only big name drummer I feel this way about, but still.
@@GamingDrummer89dudes insane! I love Lombardo but just saw Tempesta live again an i think I am leaning more towards him. Lombardo is the king of double bass but Tempesta rules the top an cymbals
Haha. Almost not fair. There’s Virgil then everyone else. Virgil is the most innovative drummer on the planet and can do things no one can do except play dream theater lol. Much respect all the drummers though.
Virgil's technique: playing so complicated stuff that no one notices when you make a mistake because they will think it's a variation of what you were playing before, and they didn't understand that in the first place.
All of them are unique and great in their own way. Charlie is my favorite. So smooth and powerful. Like liquid. What he plays in Anthrax is a small part of what he is really capable of. I bet he could easily hold his own with Donati, Lang, Minneman and others. He did a drum duet with Mike Portnoy a few years ago and was simply amazing, ripping out Dream Theater parts like it was nothing. And Portnoys parts ard pretty involved.
@monokhem ok Fanboy....Game recognize game, and you cant see it; You are the definition of a fanboy. Go ahead and reply and get your last word in, but still understand Virgil is better. There is no shame in that, like I said before, even Charlie would agree.
J.D. Due get real. They all might all be competent live and studio drummers but are not on the same level as Donati. He is Wekyl, Chambers, Philips, Gadd, Lang level greatness. I assure you they are all the drum heroes of these guys. Benante and Tempesta ARE the best from that era along with Paul Bostaph.
pachondeck Sorry ,but YOU sounds like a “basic metal listener” Donati KNOWLEDGE TRANSCENDS anY style. PURE MUSIC GENIUS. Nothing to do with just Speed or “x or y “ style.
+GamerDares wins There's not even a point saying that, no one comes close to Donati, and no one except drum nerds like Mayer, Weckl, Colaiuta,...would want to anyway cause there is no point to that!, this is just drum wankery for Jazz elitists that mostly no one even understand or want to understand or care about !
CultureShockGaming In my opinion Donati is far technically superior to Weckl and vinnie. Maybe not Jo jo.. Drum wankery? Pfft that's what it's called when you cannot do it.
worhsip your own gods dude ! Sure Donati's probably the best in his own camp, but personally life's too short to waste it on trying to be the best at anything, till a drummer is having fun i thinks it's the most important !
CultureShockGaming Donatis one of the most technical drummers on earth, Benente couldn't touch most of what Donati plays. The only other that comes close to Donatis rudimentary mastery would be Minneman.
Johnny T used to be Charlie's roadie & they were childhood friends also, lucky guy. If not for Charlie's recommending JT to Rob Zombie (which led to Testament & so on) he probably still just be a roadie. Just like Nick Menza was Chuck B's roadie when he was in Megadeth, Nick was always tellin Mustain "Fire That Guy Dave Im Way Better Than Him", & thats exactly how he became They're drummer
Hey everyone brings something to the table. Some famous drummers are primarily performance oriented while someone like Donati is rudiment oriented player with more emphasis on skill development.
you should be good at more than one thing ever since I started studying a "Bachelor of popular music and contemporary performance I realised it's better to have a variety of skills that's why I started playing piano as well not just drums and to learn to write songs and so why not learn how to play by ear and also learn how to read charts and also learn rudiments and good performance skills I had to do performance skills in my master classes in uni
Used to be a big fan of Donati (or guys like Lang, Grebb, Smith, Mayer Minemann etc...) even tho i could only graps à little of what he is doing, but personally the technique for the sake of technique itself is just plain boring, it makes you look more like a freak you'd see at a circus show than really anything enjoyable, proof most of these jazz classical elitist you see during jazz shows are just here for technique wankery because they all feel themselves "so much out there" (the same with pro chefs in cooking, or ultra realistic painters etc in art)..., I really prefer raw power, easy to grasp, it can be anything from metal to jazz or samba really, just make it musical !
Meh, it's just the idiom. It's not hard to get distracted by technique, but if you always have that depth of technical ability it's not necessarily about technique anymore to the player. In Virgil's case for example, he wouldn't be getting the work he does if he was just crapping out technique and not bringing actual musical ideas to the table and showing he can interact musically with others. Don't characterize other people's motivations, you can only truly speak to your own.

John Tempesta underrated drummer for sure!
Charlie and John both, incredible and legendary in their own right.
It's not that the other drummers are bad. Donati is simply from another galaxy.
For a metal drummer Charlie Benantte is so original in his playing style.
Tempesta almost destroys the kit he's on. What a beast.
more like the platform... ya could see it bouncing.

I literally like Charlie Benante's drumming 🥁😎
He is so underrated
No doubt, Charlie's a bada*s on the kit
@@Mike-oz5pp I agree 😎
He’s way better than what Anthrax requires of him. I had no idea he was so versatile. It’s like Anthrax is his day job.

Yeah,Virgil is unmatched in so many ways,he play so complicated stuff only few even understand whats goin on
so true. we are amongst those few, the guy's on a league of his own.
Marc Batero Espejo Totally.Every serious drummer knows that Virgil is on another level.
In the begginng of the video even if you dont see whos playing, you can tell its virgil..
if i remember correctly, Tempesta used to be Charlie's drum tech
Yep
I remember the intro in NFV I said no shit then shortly after he was in Exodus

great viewing here team on two fronts - the lads on the kits and Van halens live without a net on the store TV in the background !!!!
I'm positive Charlie is the smoothest drummer I've ever seen.
Love Charlie Benante and John Tempesta. Kinda cool to see them drumming together considering John was Charlie's drum tech back in the late 1980's.
donati the thunder from down under
And those drums still get sold as new lol
Pmsl!! \m/ XoD
Virgil's technique: playing so complicated stuff that no one notices when you make a mistake because they will think it's a variation of what you were playing before, and they didn't understand that in the first place.
Charlie Benante AND John Tempesta!!!
Donati wipes the floor with them.
@monokhem the majority of the people dont deserve to know who donati is, and you are one of them
Watching Charlie and John, anyone miss their drum buddy and good ol jamming days :(
Nah man,you gotta get back at it I been at it 30+ years and I can teach my self new shit every day now Your soul needs that shit 🤘

John tempesta is a beast!!!! 7:32 fucking awesome
How can i say? 3 great drummers show his life.
Virgil all the way but charlie n john were impressive!!!
clayton cameron - crazy depth of swing and time.…..
No, Tempesta is not underrated.
No, Benante is not underrated.
These are both well respected drummers by colleagues worldwide.

John Tempesta the best.
The beginning sounds slot like bonzos style, fukn awesome!!!!
VIRGIL S2
Who was the swimmer??? Cool that he can play drums too!
Anyone know what snare he is using? Sounds so amazing
Donati is the clear winner, because we kinda have no choice ;). Uhum benante i mean offcourse, one of the "genres" best i my personal prefernce.
Virgil.
Virgil, you scary
Como le cambia la cara cuando esta Tempesta :)
Charlie FTW..

Ginger Baker's son.

Greatest, Best, Most Awesome, etc. It's all nonsense, just say, "X is my favorite."
Why are they playing each other's signature snare? lol
Tempesta is beating the fuck out those skins
Charle Beneate and Cesar Escobar Fuck Yeah!!!!!
if that's the guy before Tempesta joins in, he's pretty good. nice stuff. but Charlie is a monster, no doubt...
They are but amateurs in comparison to Donati
Virgil is pretty much a god, but they're all great

Wtf Joe Satriani?
Ummm boy, Virgil is so far away from the rest of the guys in the video. They are almost rookies compared to Donati....

I think Lombardo recorded.
