    I was actually alive back before we domesticated watermelons. And is a good thing we did. They used to roam the countryside in gangs. Climbing into bins knocking litter around. They'd chase dogs and old people. Watermelons were real shits back then

      They simply tasted slightly better than other plants. For example, here in my country there is a plant "Bread n' cheese" (how it got that name is beyond me).
      Anyway it grows on trees, and the fruit looks much like beans, with a long sack with multiple seeds inside. If memory serves, the sack is soft with a caramel brown colour, and when ripe it splits open revealing the seeds. These seeds are covered with a red and white flesh that is edible.
      Now currently, there is little meat on the seeds and the taste is bland to slightly bitter, but people still eat them. If it were, that persons began to farm these, I am sure criteria such as seed to fruit ratio, taste and size would produce tastier and more satisfying fruit...
      Now I kinda wanna try farming them...
      I guess other examples would be dunks which have huge seeds, and a bit of meat on them, or sea-grapes which are a bit bitter, both of which are still commonly sold in season.
      Then also perhaps even tamarind leaves which, unlike the fruit, don't have a strong taste but are still washed and chewed. Just as long as they're slightly good, people won't mind eating, especially back when that was the best you had.

    The sweet corn we eat off the cob or canned was only bred in the late 19th century. Even the dry field corn we use as cattle feed or to make ethanol was only bred a few decades earlier. Before that corn was very hard with a thick hull. We now call this variety flint corn, and the only types we often see are the multicolored "Indian corn" used for decoration, or popcorn. In order to eat whole kernels of flint corn the hulls had to be softened with alkali such as lye or slaked lye. This is called nixtamalization, and its product is hominy, from which also can be made grits or masa.

      _Max_ Actually, the article you linked says that weird patterns like that were _believed_ to be caused by under or over-watering, but then they discovered it had to do with "improper pollination." Under or over-watering can cause other issues, though.

    I think the wild banana is just a different variety from the banana usually sold internationally, but in Indonesia there are several other banana you can find and the wild banana mentioned are the one we put on special fruits salad called "rujak bebek". This fruits salad is a bunch of fruits being crushed together with some spices, and this particular banana can only be eaten after crushed and has bitter taste.

      technically that is still gmos because for example round eggplants is a gene, and we breed them until they got to an oval

    • @marielaalvarado4793
      @marielaalvarado4793 7 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Blaque but gmos are when you take like a bacterias DNA or some kind of animal and mix it into the fruit, this is impossible in nature. But domestication is different Bc it's not with another animal but rather with its own species. It also happens naturally when the wind blows and the seeds are carried onto another plant.

      they honestly were not. there basic design was to rip your insides out. if you were to eat one you would crap blood for days. ok admittedly that's a bit graphic but they were completely unsafe in that they would give you IBS. it is no secret that back then fruits were mostly used as dietary supplements and ... well for lack of better use, deodorant. the fruits whole design centers around a sweet smelling aroma that causes the animal to eat it along with the seed, the seed induces vomiting or diarrhea fertilizing the seed to grow once defecated. it wasn't until humans started to experiment with fruits that we found ways to breed less seeds and more edible substance witch caused them to be eaten more often.the earliest fruits were ones like lemons, oranges, and of cores apples witch caused less damage to ones bowels as the seeds were self sustaining and were meant to grow from there encased, sweet, soft exterior as they fell from trees. Bananas were also soft like the one shown, but because they would grow in tropical settings they needed to be filled with many more seeds to insure growth once falling from a tree. meaning the insides of old bananas did not taste good or smell good, the only reason they were cultivated was because of monkeys who would eat them out of starvation, growing separate (more edible) forms of banana.
      so when you are eating bananas remember that you are eating something that was mostly cultivated by the shit of monkeys.

      It's fun to just make up things and pretend they are facts isn't it. The idea that fruit was never consumed until humans began to breed their own is absurd...About as absurd as the idea that fruit was designed to make animals sick in order to grow. I don't know where you got this idea but it certainly isn't backed up by facts of any kind.

  • @PongoXBongo
    @PongoXBongo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Traits are based on genes. Any process that changes traits inherently changes (modifies) genes. The method doesn't matter, it's still genetic modification. It can be left to nature (natural selection), controlled by man (GMO), or something in between (selective breeding). Follow the facts, not the fears. ;)

    • @Pacmau01
      @Pacmau01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Best explanation so far. It's all genetics.
      Yes. Nature experiments all the time. And those who survive have the best offspring. To remain for generations slightly changing.
      GMO's try to do this faster. By selecting the specific trait required. Even if it's taken from other species. Wich really doesn't matter, as long as it is carefully isolated.
      And selective breeding is what has been done for centuries. And what made crops what they are today.

    Everyone wants to think that selective breeding is completely different from genetic modification but the fact is they are the same thing people need to wake up and realize that GMOs are the next step in the evolution of our food and the key to human survival without GMOs we simply won't be able to produce enough food for our growing population

    • @verdantina
      @verdantina 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      i understand their complaints from an ethical perspective but people who keep crying "but it's not NATURAL" sound ridiculous. little of what we experience in modern life is natural, least of all our food. and people screaming that plant breeding doesn't involve genetic modification need to look into what is actually involved in classical breeding. scientists have been using in vitro techniques since the 18th century at least.

    • @KalinaAngell
      @KalinaAngell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Ryan Johnson Suicide genes in seeds won't feed the population. Also, pesticides, herbicides are toxic and disrupt the natural ecosystems. Introducing animal and insect genes into fruits and vegetables is also not the same as crossbreeding plant species or hybridizing in the traditional sense. We don't know the longterm effects on the ecosystem the way we can hypothsize with crossing related plant species. We don't understand our ecosystem enough. We're not scientifically advanced enough. We're kids with matches. Look at the bee population. Keep in mind too that there are GMOs and GE...genetically engineered foods too. Yes, it's true that organic isn't exactly what it was, but our ancestors bred to survive. Today, things are being bred for profit. Greedy profit. Thus, farmers who care enough to keep things as natural as possible and go through the pains to get USDA label are fabulous heroes in my eyes. Conventional farmers get more support. Monsanto has been trying to destroy organic farmers. They have sued organic farmers for "using seeds they patented" that blew across in farmers' fields. People can't control the wind, and they couldnt help that Monsanto strategically moved in after to sue for wind blowing their patented designer seeds around and then take their land after they cannot continue to live in a shut down farm and had to move. Bad enough a farmer can lose their USDA label in this, but now suing and destroying farm families means of survival? Do you really trust these bullies to put food on your table? It's just profit to them.

      1. Pesticides and herbicides are not GMO's
      2. GMO's regardless of their current use, are one of the most revolutionary types of technology to date.
      3. We don't know the longterm effects? We never will and we have to act as currently people are starving to death. As of 5:13pm 7/4/17 over 22,000 people have died from hunger just today. That is roughly 31,000 every day. Over 11 million a year.
      4. Bad practices with farmers is terrible and should be fixed, but GMO's are worth trying to fix said issues.
      Yes I trust them because it isn't the ones doing the shitty business practices doing the science, it is scientists who care about the world. Even if it was the ones doing the shitty business practices, they want money, so they will do what they can to make us happy.

      escapegrl1 Frakenfood ≠ GMO
      GMO is directly modifying the genes of a species.
      That doesn't mean having that modified produce pesticides/herbicides/fungicides automatically.
      It could do something as simple as give the plant a different taste, and something as complex as making it a completely different plant!
      Frakenfood is just having the a flower of a subspecies of a organism, say, a jalapeno pepper, be pollinated by a flower of a bell pepper.
      *_BOOM!_* A bellapeno!

    Watermelons came from somewhere in Africa and were cultivated in ancient Egypt as a source of extra water in the dry season, but they were a smaller round fruit and had hard seeds. The selective breeding was well along by the time of that Renaissance painting, so that was not an "ancient" variety.

    you people I the comment section need some education. GMO is not the same as selective breeding. GMO is taking the DNA of a completely different organism and unnaturally merging them together. one example that is used commonly is putting fish DNA into strawberries to allow them to survive frost. not possible in nature.
    selective breading is cross pollinating two plants (or breeding two animals, usually of the same/similar species) to create a desired plant. it doesn't always work, but it cannot happen unless it can happen. take a mule for an example. You can't have a horse ejaculate on a strawberry flower and get a horberry, or whatever, because its impossible. But you can get a mule from a female horse and male donkey fucking.

    • @shadowmoon1657
      @shadowmoon1657 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Both will end up with an "unnatural" plant. Also several domesticated plants like bananas, corns and watermelons are a cross between different species. Fruits like the green lime didnt even exist in nature. We didnt know what DNA was but we were crossing different plants based on what characteristics we wanted from them.

    • @Hydrus808
      @Hydrus808 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "unnaturally merging them together"
      lol you're saying bullshit , so what it's unnatural because it's chemical? but there is chemical everywhere and what is the diff between gmo and selective breeding? with gmo you get a faster result

    • @commode7x
      @commode7x 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So, it's not GMO just because you say so? Makes perfect sense now.

    • @RFalhar
      @RFalhar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "not possible in nature" Totally incorrect. Just because genes come from fish doesn't make them "bad". Plant can evolve arbitrary sequence of genes. That doesn't make those genes "good". Also, it is not about genes. It is about what those genes produce. Gene would only be "bad" if it produced an end product that cannot be used for it's final purpose, like animal feed, consumption by humans or further processing.

    • @dickdastardly9209
      @dickdastardly9209 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marc
      Except he's not just explaining the term. He's making the distinction as a counter argument against people explaining that if people hate GMOs, they have just as much reason to hate all the regular stuff they eat. And they would be correct. The distinction of terms does not notate some distinction in quality or nature. Because if your only beef with GMOs is they're not """""""natural"""""" then that applies to EVERYTHING.

A lot of this video is just different species of fruit in the same family as fruits we know well.
