One piece odyssey is the first one piece game that I would recommend to someone who wasn't a one piece fan. And the story works great to cater both to people who don't plan on ever watching/reading it, and providing a nostalgia trip for those who already have. The only negative thing I can think of is that I wish it was a bit more difficult. The gameplay system is great, too, because it's not only interesting mechanically, but it's also thematically appropriate. Talking about the common trope of shounen characters being split up and having to fight bad guys on their own or in smaller groups
I enjoyed it, I agree with you on difficulty, it is far too easy which leads to boredom after a while. Any JRPG can be easy (given grinding) but the exp bonuses were ridiculous and sometimes hard to avoid unless you're trying to drag out encounters. If they just added a harder setting it would've got a 8/10 rather than my 7/10.

As much as I have a soft spot for Agarest War I get why most people wouldn't be into it. The story is quite hit or miss, and the combat ranges from frustrating with the later difficulty spikes to downright boring. Least the current switch port gives you an option to turn on all the dlc at the start of the game. With everything it gives you it's easy to make an overpowered party early to have for the later portions of the game. I'm currently playing through the first Atelier Ryza game and loving it. Glad I decided to buy all three of them upon release so I can just go from one to the next XD
I loved Trinity Trigger but holy moly the combat needs to reworked with no damage penalty and not reuse the same boss for 3 major fights. I will say I respect you saying Legend of Dragoon is trash. I love it, but I can def see why someone could hate some of the stuff going on with it.
I have a huge soft spot for Redemption Reapers despite how it works against itself and the player constantly- get wiped? - grind some skirmishes. Except weapon degradation. So go to the Blacksmiths… How much? To repair one fucking spear? Are you kidding me?? Better grind for gold…oh. One skirmish earns enough to pay for only 3/4 of the subsequent weapon degradation!! Etc etc But I love it. The five characters are great, the sense of struggle is palpable and the artstyle beautifully bleak. I forgive you dahlink for wearing one of my g-strings as your t-shirt today 😍
As a Neptunia fan myself, I find myself burned out by the repetition of the games. The only reason I come back is the dialogue by the English VAs. It may be because Melissa Fahn, Kate Higgins, and Wendee Lee are my favorite voice actresses from my child hood.
I couldn't agree more about Redemption Reapers; I haven't played it, but so many games release broken and unfinished. It's why I almost never buy a game that hasn't been out for at least a year anymore. Love the Men on Films reference, too!
“[Octopath Traveller 2] RPG old schooler’s wet dream” - David has such a way with words. And yeah I suppose I’m picking it up. It’s recommended by an old dude to another old dude
First reviewer I've heard knocking Three houses and praising Colgate-chan. A very interesting take. I haven't played either since I don't own a Switch but I've watched a lot of gameplay. I'm not a fan of high school melodrama that JRPG/Anime fans seem to crave. In fact, I hate it. But I do think the story to Three Houses is overall better and handled more maturely. Engage seems like an Idol Simulator. Reminds me too much about the Persona/Fire Emblem cross over they did (who's name escapes me rn). It's probably a great game if you just skip all the cut scenes and dialogue lol.
More games please do a top 10 and a crap 10 instead of just 5 for each. Really loved this video and hearing about the games you hated as well as those you loved 🤩
I went in and played Bayonetta and The Lost Demon with the thought that it's going to be a Bayonetta-game (and not as action-JRPG) and I'm not disappointed. I had a blast playing it after the fact I had a terrible tummyache weeks before.
I agree that certain companies are getting lazy in their releases now. They purposely release buggy crap games and just figure "meh, we'll patch that later". Leaving a lot of games practically unplayable at release. Look at the mess with Call of Duty and Cyberpunk. Fans have given far too many chances and are fed up with it now.
I know it was only mentioned during the Aetlier Ryza segment, but I really don't understand the hatred for Crafting systems. If anything, it's easier than having to grind out tons and tons of cash to buy every piece of equipment and item that's needed. Like yes, there is still grinding involved, but more times than not, it's not as much of a time sink imo
I agree with you. Game developers/publishers need to stop with releasing half assed shit , and tell people it'll be fixed later. They need to go back to the quality of pre-internet days when games were actually done when they hit shelves, not in paid-beta masquerading as a release.
That's partly why I love Octopath Traveler 2. I haven't come across any bugs, and there's no DLC to worry about. It's just one good game and that's all there is to it. It's refreshing. Although it's kind of sad that a game that's actually finished like this is uncommon these days.
I always appreciate David's brutal honesty! Unfortunately, I haven't played a single game on this list so I can't really contribute haha. I do want to try Fire Emblem Engage and I recently got Atelier Ryza 1 to start trying out that series!
So happy to hear about the One Piece game! I was so worried that I wasn't going to understand anything since I pretty much know NOTHING about the series. If you say it's fine to go in knowing nothing, that's AMAZING to hear!!! I really really wanted to play it!!!
The series is definitely worth watching in small doses. I started recently as I'm taking a break from Dragonball Z after finish the Cell Saga. I'm glad the games give you sound introductions to the characters to those who haven't touched the series. If Odyssey does the same, I would like to give that game a go in the future.
Just out of curiosity... Have you come across Bramble yet? That game is straight up even more Swedish than I am! I've only played the demo so far, and that bit is somewhat like Unravel, only without the melancholy. (... and with a bunch of unfortunate mispronunciations.)
To me, it speaks highly of a tie-in/licensed video game that someone unfamiliar with the source material enjoyed it this much. I still need to play it, but that’s definitely a good recommendation.
I actually enjoyed the story for the Agarest games, but I wouldn't recommend the games, the overall systems of the game are just really really bad. It's obvious what they want you to do in those games is buy all the items DLC, because the game wants you to grind to keep pace with the difficulty, but they made it so grinding is so tedious with a horrible combat system, and time limits so if your not at a certain place of the map by a certain turn you lose the ability to see the True Ending of the game.
Least they give you the dlc for free with the switch port. Turning it on before starting up the game gives you plenty of weapons and other items to be rather overpowered for a while. But, yeah, the true ending is frustrating to get without using a guide.
I'm so with you on the Atelier series. I found my way to it through Mana Khemia: Alchemist of Al Revis. I love this game almost as much as I love CT just FYI. I also got sucked into Ryza, am currently on the second one.
Glad to hear you liked trinity trigger. I bought it but haven't gotten into it yet. I saw secret of mana-like and I gave my money away. But then I've seen some wishy washy reviews about it
Astria Ascending is a lot better than Octopath, better graphics, more depth, more creative, better in every single way & similar battle system. Can't wait for Ryza 3 & One Piece...still working my way through backlog.
David, thank you for your thoughts. I am updating from the PS4 to the PS5 so I will keep these thoughts in mind. If you or anyone else has any thoughts on RPGs you believe are best played on the PS5, I would love to hear your recommendations!
David! Love the channel. I have been breaking free from MMO addiction and trying to play more JPRGs/RPGs that actually have an ~ending~ and your videos have given me a multitude of awesome suggestions. I am curious - concerning the Atelier Ryza series, have you played 1 and 2 as well? If so, would you recommend these before playing the third game? (Also, does anything transfer between any of the titles?) Thanks for the great content, you have another subscriber in me! :)
Glad to have you here! Each game is a direct sequel of the next, so I would play them in order, but don’t worry too much about carryovers. It’s just costumes and minor accessories.
Nah. The Artificial Idiocy alone is enough to make Trinity Trigger a bad game. For anyone who wants to play that game, make your AI members use range weapons and never look back. At least they would stop running headfirst into every enemy attack. Neptunia had good games but Sisters isn't one.
I wish I could like Octopath 2, but I ran into the same problem as the first one. Which is by the time I gathered all my characters together and got the second classes for everyone I was level 45 with everyone and had seen what all the starting classes had to offer. So all I had to do was fight extremely under leveled stuff in the story quests making everything super fricken boring. I am sure If I managed to slog through the only slighty more interesting character stories by end games I would maybe have a small challenge again but I was so done with the game without even getting to chapter 2 of any characters.
Nothing wrong with not ending up liking Octopath Traveler 2. You like what you like. I happened to love it for the most part, but some things just aren't fun for other people.
Idea Factory/Compile Heart really does put out mostly bad games, but my exposure started with the 2 best ones, Mary Skelter and Fairy Fencer F, so I kept being disapointed after finishing those 2... and Fairy Fencer F isn't "good", it's just enjoyable in the same way as flamin' cheetos. It's basically just Neptunia, but a little less nonsensical and brainless and with some jokes that actually land. If Neptunia is a 5/10 series, FFF is a 7/10.
To be fair to Legend of Dragoon - it was a PS1 game and for it's time it was a good game - the story is pretty good, and once you got used to the addition system it was pretty simple to play. Now, over 20 years later sure it's massively dated and the hype for it is probably from long term fans. I mean I wouldn't mind a remaster though.
It's almost like they should fuckin give it the FF7 remake treatment and redo it for this generation. Like the gamers have been asking them to do for YEARS.
@@DecentMilk Literally untrue. The game would be just as successful as FF7 remake more then likely if they put as much effort into it as the time they wasted splitting FF7 remake into 3 different damn parts.
I liked Legend Of Dragoon back in the day… or perhaps I should say, the demo on my Jampack Demo Disc. Funnily enough, I had quite a few PS2 games… but I swear I played that one demo disc more than anything except maybe Splinter Cell Double Agent co-op. Mainly Spider-Man, but still… Then eventually I played Midnight Club 2 Dub Edition and then Burnout… 2? 3? Takedown? Something. With my father a lot.
What are your thoughts on the Disgaea series? I have 3 on the Vita, but the mechanics are a little backward. If you happen to like them, are you able to recommend a good resource for me to use to fall in love with this game?
I’ve felt for a long time that, a visual red flag that a game will be lackluster..is when the characters are over-designed. When they have so much going on with their gear, their hair, their weapon etc..almost always seems to be a frumpy game. You know..basically what you see in all the gacha game’s advertising. If it’s a console game and the character designs look like that and have 1,000 things going on with their appearance, appearing like some maxed out deity but are supposed to be your average low level person just trying to make it in the world..definitely going to suffer from poor writing. Maybe little to nobody will ultimately get what I mean with this but…just my own personal observation.
Hi David! I love when you rip shitty games a new a-hole. Well deserved criticisms. On the brighter side, your list of best games is solid. Wishlisted them. One Piece Odyssey is the one I really want to try, (though I know nothing about the anime). Have a blessed day everyone!
I don't know how someone can be so right about so much but so wrong about Legend of Dragoon! I kid of course but god I love that game and I'd love a remaster that gave you unlimited inventory.
So many good games this year and we aren't even halfway! Trinity Trigger is such a wonderful treat, I really need to pick up Octopath 2 and Ryza 3 already xD
David’s looking a JRPG protagonist! Seriously though, looking kick-butt!!! And THANK YOU! I love SRPG’s. But try & try as I might to enjoy any of the games in the “Record of Agarest War” and I just can’t. The convoluted battle-system is just not enjoyable. And unnecessary! “Triangle Strategy” accomplishes all the goals the “RoA” games attempt, such as engaging tactical battles & branching paths with characters based on dialogue, but it’s actually enjoyable to play. (Have to disagree with you about “Legend of Dragoon”, I like the additions, it’s just they needed to be more forgiving on the additions accuracy & timing! But I thought the battle system was a lot of fun and the story of “LoD” had potential for sequels. Would love spiritual or actual sequels with same battle systems but improved of “Legend of Dragoon” & “Legend of Legaia”)
Man, I'd love to argue against your placement of Legend of Dragoon, but I can't. I love that game to bits, but it requires a dump truck of patience to really get the most out of it, and with first impressions being a big criteria for you, I can't blame you one bit for not enjoying it. Also, new subscriber here! I found you from Alex's video on good game soundtracks and knew immediately I had to check your stuff out!
Gotta agree with that Fire Emblem take. While I didn't dislike some of the Three Houses fluff, it really made replaying the game such a slog and unappealing. Engage was the most fun I've had in a FE game in a while!
I started with Three Houses and it's a fun game but I think for the franchise as a whole it was a mistake. We went from that game to a more traditional approach to FE in Engage and I think it gave many newcomers to the series, myself included, some whiplash. I have been playing Shadows of Valentia on DS and I've been finding that one in particular fun. The animations in that game are top tier.
@@Cognazzo95 I definitely agree with you here. It being the most popular FE of recent times doesn't help as it just gives much more newcomers that whiplash. Despite the differences I still did really enjoy my first playthrough! I hope you try out and enjoy more of the older games (and new ones to come too!). It's my favourite series to date!
@@betterthanbrooklyn5806 Unfortunately I stopped playing because my friend at work wouldn’t shut up about it. It kinda turns me off of a series when someone talks too much about it. Especially when they give away major plot points in the story. I think one thing that could be good for this series is remasters of the old games removing the permadeath mechanic making it more accessible to new players. Hardcore is fun and all, but only after a play through or two of the game for the story. Considering how remakes have been popular lately, we can only hope I suppose.
I have to disagree with you on two points. I loved Legend of Dragoon. The transformations were so much fun. And I watched a friend play their early copy of Trinity Trigger. It came across a little boring. The story wasn’t that exciting and the combat seemed really clunky, especially the stamina. I’ll admit that character avatars were quite good, I’m a huge of Final Fantasy/Brave Defaultesque character art. but that can’t really save what comes across as a fairly generic JRPG.
Wow matter of opinions for sure but LoD is one of my all time favorite games. Maybe it was because I played it when it came out and played it over and over. Idk about the port version. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on Mystic Quest
Great reviews! Question though: when it comes to having multiple platforms for games like Trinity trigger, what system do you tend ti gravitate to play on?
From what I understand, David seems to get a game for the Switch if it's something that he wants the ability to play portably. For example, David got Octopath Traveler 2 for Switch to actually play but he got the Collector's Edition for PS5. In the case of him not wanting to play that game portably or if it's not available on the Switch, I think he'll want to get it on PC because PC has better performance and easier to record. In the case of Final Fantasy 16, there's no other option than PS5 for now, so that's obvious.
@@murkywaters5502 I get the portability factor, but most games just look so much better on ps4 and pc. Rather have the quality most times instead of handheld.
Loved octopath 1 and 2 was even better. By the end of the first there were a few stories i was slogging through but i enjoyed every characters story. Such a great game hope we get a third game and its even better.

Love the Men on Films reference, too!
same, but mostly because I don´t want to pay 60+ bucks for a game
especially fighting games
“[Octopath Traveller 2] RPG old schooler’s wet dream” - David has such a way with words.
And yeah I suppose I’m picking it up. It’s recommended by an old dude to another old dude
I love Neptune games it's like a jank inside joke of a game
When a video from David comes out you don't dip out early.
Tokyo mirage session i think
Octopath II will be a hard JRPG to beat this year, I'm in love with the game; and the music is absolutely amazing!
It's ironic that a game like Agarest War keeps getting ported but Skies of Arcadia, FF Tactics, old Lunar and Fire Emblem games don't get them.
didn't Squenix register a copyright for a FFT remaster?
At least the girls' designs of Record of Agarest War are worthy, this person should draw for eroges too
Calling Legends of Dragoon a bad game, makes your opinion invalid.
Damn bro! You got swollen for that hot Atlanta summer coming up! Great game coverage as always, keep up the good work!
I totally spit out my coffee when you said “Hated it”. classic. 😂
I always appreciate David's brutal honesty! Unfortunately, I haven't played a single game on this list so I can't really contribute haha. I do want to try Fire Emblem Engage and I recently got Atelier Ryza 1 to start trying out that series!
I can't agree with you on Cereza and the lost demon. But the rest of the bad ones do look really bad
"Idea FUCKtory". I can't tell if you said that intentionally or not, but I can't disagree.
So happy to hear about the One Piece game! I was so worried that I wasn't going to understand anything since I pretty much know NOTHING about the series. If you say it's fine to go in knowing nothing, that's AMAZING to hear!!! I really really wanted to play it!!!
You’ll love it!!
DavidVinc serving 🔥
I also got sucked into Ryza, am currently on the second one.
you suck at games the ateiler series is great.
Glad to hear you liked trinity trigger. I bought it but haven't gotten into it yet. I saw secret of mana-like and I gave my money away. But then I've seen some wishy washy reviews about it
every reviewer who doesn't like it also doesn't like secret of mana.
If david is a RPG protagonist the main villian would be Idea Factory
Astria Ascending is a lot better than Octopath, better graphics, more depth, more creative, better in every single way & similar battle system. Can't wait for Ryza 3 & One Piece...still working my way through backlog.
Holy shit, i wanted to see the content from the video but i ended watching this final boss of a man. Great shape brother
And by the way i dont want to reduce you on your looks, i love your content
Woahh slow there big buddy. Dont fck with agarest of war. This was my waifu fix back in the day
WTF!!!!!! i almost spit my drink out clicking on this vid!! JACKED!!!!💪🏿
Also how dare u David!!, we love Legend of Dragoon!!! hahaha
Bro you are getting jacked and absolutely shredded Also thanks for the RPG advise.
Hyperdimension Neptunia ❤, Bayonetta series ❤, Legend of Dragoon ❤
The Ideafactory slander 😂 thank you for using your voice to articulate how I feel
Fire Emblem Engage was nice change after that High School management game....
Right, but the art style in three houses was great and I prefered it to "engage".
Oh my god that legend of dragoon in the bad release caught me by surprise, I feel personally attacked again 😅
Man. I loved Crystalis. A part of me teared up when I saw it in a very short clip in the early part of your video.
David, you're amazing. 50,000 thumbs up.
Mainly Spider-Man, but still…
Then eventually I played Midnight Club 2 Dub Edition and then Burnout… 2? 3? Takedown? Something. With my father a lot.
Holy shit dude, i didn't know you were so shredded
You should make a video about why you hate Zelda so much
But I don’t hate Zelda?
Hi David! I love when you rip shitty games a new a-hole. Well deserved criticisms. On the brighter side, your list of best games is solid. Wishlisted them. One Piece Odyssey is the one I really want to try, (though I know nothing about the anime). Have a blessed day everyone!
Watch the anime first then it'll be better
The agarest girls and art style seem amazing, but I've heard the grind is a nightmare. That's the only thing keeping me away.
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you here :)
Why the hell did you play Cereza as your first Bayonetta game!? It was advertised as being very different from the main line games!
because he doesn´t get along with action games, same reason why I haven´t played it either
@@Cognazzo95 ah ok sad but that's fair. hope you had fun with the bit you played at least
Couldn't disagree more with your Bayonetta evaluation. The game is great
"Hated it!" OMG LMAO! I give that response "two snaps in Z formation!"
Except they weren’t fun cause you couldn’t do them lmao
I love jrpg's and I'll still support those crap games 😅😊😁
Wow matter of opinions for sure but LoD is one of my all time favorite games. Maybe it was because I played it when it came out and played it over and over. Idk about the port version.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on Mystic Quest
Great reviews! Question though: when it comes to having multiple platforms for games like Trinity trigger, what system do you tend ti gravitate to play on?
It really just depends if I want portability or not
From what I understand, David seems to get a game for the Switch if it's something that he wants the ability to play portably.
Rather have the quality most times instead of handheld.
this is pretty cool, do you have a 2022 edition of best games you played (doesn't have to be jrpg or strategy) and 2021, 2020, 2019?
I do!
@@davidvinc is it this one? th-cam.com/video/eIEU7qWCPJc/w-d-xo.html
You are the only one from whom I heard that they find Trinity Trigger good.
Oooo, you were feisty with them crap games, I like it!
The pushing out is the stockholders, not the game makers.
Legend of Dragoon is from 24 years ago so it shouldn’t be judged as a 2023 game.
Hardout lol it was one of the best rpgs
he's not judging it as 2023 game. He's hated it since 1998 for 1998 reasons
WOW. David is jacked.
He looks like he can go through the stargate & slap a Goa'uld & there's nothing they could do about it.
They only get one chance? Ouch.... Cold...😂 "If you release a trash game, you get a trash review!"🤣🤣
Loved octopath 1 and 2 was even better. By the end of the first there were a few stories i was slogging through but i enjoyed every characters story. Such a great game hope we get a third game and its even better.
Octopath 2 is my GOTY! Easy choice !
