I did not know what to expect from Yakuza: Like a Dragon. But I couldn't stop playing once I got invested. The story is so good and the gameplay was surprisingly one of the best I've played in my recent JRPG.
Like a Dragon is the Goat! Easily put in 100hrs and enjoyed every minute. Ichiban actually served 18yrs in prison, his 15yr sentence plus an extra 3 for beating the shit out of that dude while in prison.
The Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is also really cheap on both the Switch and PS4 (Usually in the $20-$30 USD range) and you can still get a new copy of the PS2 version for around $30 USD. The Digital Devil Saga games on the PS2 are also available new in the $30-$35 USD range. There are also new copies of Persona 3: FES for the PS2 for around $35 USD that are frequently listed on Amazon and eBay. Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered also has an Asian physical release for the Switch that contains English and you can get it from Play Asia right now for $41.99 USD.
I love Dragon Quest, especially VIII since that was my entry point to the serues. Bought a PS2 copy in near mint condition from GameStop for only about $10 about a year before they stopped stocking used PS2 games. I loved it so much I even bought the re-released version on 3DS back when that first came out. And I especially love Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and that's only partly because the main character of that game is also a huge Dragon Quest fan, and his love for it is the reason the games switched to a turn based system with his introduction to the series. Super serious and emotional story, with hilariously silly Japanese humor filling the side stories to the brim, it manages to tell a story that can make you cry your eyes out one minute and have you laughing like crazy 10 minutes later. It's a freaking masterpiece.
As a huge fan of the series Yakuza Like a Dragon is one of the best ones in the franchise. I remember you initially didn’t give it a chance but I’m glad you finally tried it!
Great list. Happy you mentioned the Sega Collection. I recently also bought it exclusively for the great JRPGs included. Would also be great if we got a remaster of DQ VIII on PS5/4. I don't have a PS2 and also old games are not easy to find in eastern Europe. This part of the world started to get around to using games consoles with the PS3 era, mainly due to comunism.
Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon is one of the best games I've ever played in my life. I knew it would be good because the Yakuza series is amazing, but I wasn't expecting it to be one of the best games I've ever played.
the advantage of SMT 5 compare to close to all games is how the game become progressively open as you advance. theres 4 zones, but each one is more open than the last, and the final zone drops you center and you can go anywhere.
When I got my copies of the PS1 FF games they were directly from Square at not too bad of a price. Currently the only game they have on offer is FF Origins. I would highly recommend checking there first if you are looking for a square JRPG as you can get a brand new copy for rather cheap (usually 20-30, 40 in the case of the ps3 x/x2 collectors/base edition) before seeking a used option. Just a small tip from a JRPG player and deal seeker!
Grandia II was a great game. Not sure how it aged. But same goes for all older titles. PS3 games tend to be cheap in Europe and can still be found in many places (also online). But Switch games, even the new ones, come to amazon for 45 on release(with discount vouchers), or other countries. They ship every where. Bought Triangle Strategy for €20,- incl shipping last week. Just check all countries before ordering in your own. Prices might very alot that shipping is cheaper.
I like DQ VIII it's a great game on both the PS2 and 3DS. The Sega Genesis Collection is great it's on the PS4 and Switch, might be some differences between the 2 I can't remember though. A lot of the other games never really piqued my interest. Still a good list as always.

Best Grandia game for me is still the first. The story is just so much better overall. I do prefer 2's main characters to 1, but I prefer 1's antagonists, and supporting. The battle system in 2 is definitely an improvement, but then I prefer Xtreme's battle system (though dear lord what were they thinking with the story and characters?), which feels like the culmination of the series. 4 is, as you've pointed out, a hidden gem with better overall story than most gamers give it credit, and does a great job improving on the battle system even further from the 2nd game. 1 though, has a certain charm to it that I felt was missing with the 2nd game onward.
You can also check Oninaki from same developer. Both have PS4 physical releases and are cheap. Also from the same people, I am Setsuna, but that only has a Switch physical release from what I remember.
if you like magical starsign, i'd definitely recommend its prequel, magical vacation :D! it is japan-only, and there is a recent (albeit kind of glitchy) english patch. but its graphics and story are incredible for being one of the earliest GBA titles. also if you're a fan of legend/sword of mana, the character designer of those games (shinichi kameoka) also worked on both games in the magical series!

Dragon Quest 8 on PS2 or 3DS are still worth the £20 or £35 price. I even bought a copy for my friend's birthday this october and he loves it. Shin Megami Tensei 4 is very cheap on Nintendo 3DS E Shop for £18/$20 it's my third favourite jrpg right behind Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 6 n 9 (yes I tie FF6 n 9 together cus i can't make up my mind which one is best.) Also Shining Force 1,2, in the darkness, Phantasy star 1 and 4 are great games on sega collections. I've been replaying shining force 2 so much and I just got into the game since 2018 I've beaten it about 12 times now because the game has aged so well for newcomers like me also its fun to do challenges including Nuzlocke mode.
I feel that SMTIV is better than V overall. As for voice acting nothing could possibly be worse than Baten Kaitos, which I feel was so bad that it added another level of entertainment to the game.
Think we'll get a Sega cd classics collection seeing the genesis mini 2 had cd games? That said, and this may seem odd, but I wish for future Sega collections they let you expand the library with dlc. I know people tend to not like dlc as it implies a games unfinished, but I have seen plenty of cases where that wasn't the case and it added to a co.plete game to enhance the experience, plus with the collections you wouldn't be expanding, it would basically be buying more games for your digital genesis.
Dear Erick, I am a new subscriber to your channel. I really liked this video and the other ones of the "cheap series". I own a PS4 Pro and I also own many of the games you mentioned for this console. Let's start with the Sega Classic collection. Being able to play old games without owning old consoles (or having a PC than can run emulated games) is a great benefit. I do hope you make more videos that include old classics that are available on modern consoles! As far as the new games you recommended, Yakuza Series is by far my favorite due to its story. Sakura Wars is a beautiful game with a very funny story, though I am not "captivated" by its action segments. Nier... I just purchased the Remastered/Remake version a few days ago so I cannot really say. And I think Shin Megami Tensei is ported to the PS4 as well...
Yakuza Like a Dragon is such a GOOD GAME. I picked it up absolutely dirt cheap on Amazon this week for about 25 bucks!! Despite already owning it on PC I wanted a physical copy for my Series X
I find it funny how Chaos Wars crosses over so many of Erick's favorite games despite the fact that the voice acting is atrocious XD. Grandia 2 is a masterpiece, what a game, I have the PS2 version and I never had any problems with it.
I don't know if you know this Erick but the people who worked on Freedom Wars worked on SAO Fatal Bullet. In a way, Fatal Bullet is sort of like a spiritual successor to it.
I disagree with grandia 2 switch version being better. I had frame drop issues on the switch version(when having multiple enemies on battle, especially in the later areas of the game) while I did not on the ps2 version.
I couldn’t get into other Yakuza games. I just felt like I’d rather watch a movie of it. The game was just rather boring to me. Like a Dragon, however, is one of my favorite JRPGs! I hope the next one goes a little bit more in depth with the combat and progression, but it was still great.

Drakengard 3 has an awesome cast and a great story, but i highly disagree with the notion of "a little", the game is nearly unplayable, the controls arent bad, the frame issues and janky performance are abysmal.
It's pretty bad, to be sure. I managed to get through it, but it was tough to get used to after having just played Nier Automata. I'm curious to see how it would perform while emulated on a good, modern PC.
You recommend Drakengard 3 .... sorry man but for me its the worst of the series , bad controls and monotonous combat, bad graphics except for the character models , fragmented story that you wont understand the half of it if you dont have the dlc and read the manga k.l.p. and in the end it feels kinda mid and lets not forget the atrocious ear bleeding child dragon voiceover and the worst dragon flight from all the Dragengards.
Too bad Megaten V is only on that toy console for little girls and not on a real console for grown up girls, like the PS4. Like a Dragon, Yakuza 7, is so good! It became my favorite JRPG.
