- How to test and replace a fuel pump relay. The principles shown here apply to most vehicles. However, it's best to check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.This specific vehicle is a '97 Nissan Maxima.
The fuel pump relay is an electronic component found on all vehicles with an internal combustion engine. It directs current to the electric fuel pump and ensures that the part receives enough power to operate properly, but not too much as to damage it. Whenever you turn on the ignition of your vehicle, the fuel pump relay is turned on. The fuel pump relay is usually controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or the ignition.

Great explanation and detailed and obviously it’s not for my car but you did mention that all you would have to do is punch in your vehicle information and the fuel pump relay so it really doesn’t matter what car you just have to punch in your information
Connecting current through 1 and 2 to get connectivity between 3 an 5, does that mean the current runs through 3 and 5 when installed? Is the relay in effect facilitating two seperate circuits that don't connect?
Would a faulty relay create a long cranking start in the morning issue as well?

Mine was a bad relay not sending the right amount of current to thepump causing it to run weak and it couldn’t build up the right pressure. New relay now pump gets its full power

That is a good description and explanation. However a worn out relay can show good using your test, and be erratic during operation. Those relays have contacts exactly like the old points in a 1970 Briggs engine. Those contacts can become worn and burned, giving you a good indication with your meter, but can fail after having several amps going through them.
My RR sport 2012 fuel pump is pumping more fuel than it need while engine start. Because of much fuel, it doesnt start. Can problem be fuel pump relay?
Either that or fuel pressure regulator. Even the ignition (coil) relay can cause issues with the fuel pump if the relay is bad.

Car had been starting normal without issue. Yesterday, same thing then I get on the road and it sputtered once for a split second before going back to normal. Got a few miles down the road and it started to do the same thing but more intense, like hesitation before completely dying. 94 Corolla 1.6L

I’m getting resistance and ohms when there is no power to the relay and when I put power to it I’m not getting any ohms does this determine if the relay is bad?

It's an RC lipo battery pack. You can also use a car battery if you have an extra one.
Where did you get it? How much do they usually cost?
They're not inexpensive. $60 is average. Ebay, amazon will have them.

Why did you do a continuity test and not a voltage test? Arent you trying to test for 12v or are you just seeing if the connection is made and that there is continuity?
The continuity test shows the link in the RELAY is OK and that the problem lies somewhere else, i had to think about the logic myself.

Well what kind of car are you working on.
Better yet to measure the actual resistance of the relay, most multimeters beep for continuity testing at a couple of Ohms, but even a couple of Ohms relay contact resistance will drop enough voltage to make whatever is behind that act up.

my nissan armada doesn't like to start when it's hot (80 degrees and up) outside, cranks for 3 to 5 seconds before turning the engine on. When it's cold outside (70s and below ) it cranks immediately 1 second. Does it sound like the relay?
Reading through the comments heat seems to be a factor with the relay... "park under a tree in the shade and crack the window."

how much resistance should you see passing through to consider good once the meter is hooked up? my relay clicks, but once I meter it also I get anywhere from 0.0ohms to .5ohms

Can I open this up and clean the contacts or bend the spring and get it working again? I've done this with a signal light blinker 10 years ago and it still works.
You probably could but these relays tend to be inexpensive. You may save time just by replacing the faulty relay. Good luck!
What car you working on
Temp fix.. If your cars interior is hot from the summer heat it can definitely effect the relay, especially if your car is old. If your car doesn't start, air your car out first and try it. It just worked for me. You can avoid car heat, by parking under a shady tree and crack the windows.

Is that a 12V battery tester, or source? What is the specific external battery called?
+WeekEnd133 I used a lipo battery for RC cars. YOu can use any 12v DC power source.
Just get the original relay of the car somehow. It solved my problem.

@@CarsNToys I tested them successfully on my Datsun Redigo here in India and it helped me diagnose the problem.
The power was going go the fuel pump motor but it was not working. Took it off connected it to my 12v adaptor and tried to manually rotate its fan and it started working.

Helo, sometime there are relays with five prongs, what's the fifth one for?
relays with five pins, the fifth one goes to another thing that would be powerer, when the relay is powered the pins 3 and 4 are connected but when the relay is switched off the solenoid in the relay powers down and there is no longer a connection between 3 and 4 but now between 3 and 5, its used for things like headlights, when on dipped beam the power comes from pin 4 but when on full beam the power comes from pin 5, all controlled by the switch in the car...relays with 3 pins use one of the pins as a shared earth and the other two for the circuit

That could click and you could have continuity through the contact points but what's the resistance value supposed to be. You can have a relay making like it's supposed to but if the resistance is off at the contact points it still may not work. You're almost there.

I have 240sx nissan and 75 amp fuse blown and car have no power or what so ever. After replacing it everthings seem to work except the fuel pump. I check the fuse and not single fuse blown. The fuel pump relay doesnt work because it doesn't click. I change it to another and still no click. Could be bad wiring or something shorted? What could go wrong?
Check the wiring ....pay special attention to the grounding
yeah make sure the relay actually works first, then check every wire going to the relay

I see you answered someone's question 2 weeks ago and hope you get this. I just had my pump replaced and when I drove it home, it stalled on the ex-way again. So from my reading, it could be faulty relay: One of the first symptoms of an issue with the fuel pump relay is an engine that suddenly stalls. If the fuel pump relay has an issue while the vehicle is operating it will cut off power to the fuel pump, which will cause the engine to stall. A faulty relay may allow the vehicle to be restarted a short while later, while a completely failed relay will not. And that's exactly what its doing......The million dollar question is there a way to test for this? The towing is killing me. Thanks so much........Josh
Why not just replace the relay? On average, they cost $10.
Yep that's what I did. 16.00 seemed to be the problem. I finally read an article call "Symptoms of a bad or failing fuel pump relay". Wish I had read it before the fuel pump. But its all good. Thanks for you quick reply. I was getting burnt out on being towed. Thanks
Well its 7-31-17 and I am back to square one. I dove it home yesterday; no problems. Today I drove about 40 miles fast and slow. I pulled into a parking spot and it stalled. So keep driving and I turned and it stalled at a stop. And then again in a parking spot. Then it ran fine and I went to wash it at the end of the day and it did the exact same thing is did in the beginning. Stalled at the car wash : died. And I couldn't get it started. Tried 4 times. Nothing. Then I figured I would wash it. Then I tried again. Nothing. Then I prayed and it started and got it home, but it seemed like it struggled on the way. I am wondering what else could it be? Any ideas? Running out of money. Andy thoughts would be great. Thanks Josh

what if you have 5 pins in your relay?
I got a 2006 Lexus IS 250..I ran a diagnostic and got "Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction" idk but it sounds like The fuel pump relay is not working. I cant even find it. Any suggestions ????
Best bet is to get your hands on the factory repair manual. You can often find them online via Lexus forums or try ebay. It's well worth it.
