A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON SCARLETT
Scarlett is an artist, entrepreneur and a passionate gardener. Scarlett is also a mostly raw all vegan foodist who loves gourmet raw vegan strait from the garden cooking.
For many years now she has been growing almost all of her food all year round. Scarlett's motto is grow what you eat and eat what you grow. Scarlett's journey to health started in 2011 after putting all of her energy into building a successful business for more than a decade she had lost the one thing money can not buy -her health.

Try starting your tomato seeds in a damp paper towel placed in a sandwich baggie. I've had them germinate in as little as three days. Then plant into their forever container and they grow just fine. Could save yourself some labor and time in all the repotting. You also shock the plants with each repot.
yep they are the easiest to germinate, the hard part is getting good tomatoes, before disease or bugs or too much water destroy them
the repotting and burying of the stem create stronger roots, good if you are transplanting outside
When I was at Univesity they were doing Interstitial node development on various plants. This was done by various methods to move the plants about... 1) fans blowing, 2) tables shaking 3) soft foam batons moving over them 4) left alone.
All the plants that were touched or moved were sturdier and stockier where as the plants that were untouched became long and leggy. When it came to transplanting the touched plants had better survival rates than the untouched plants.

Hi leggy plants and lack of flowers are caused by a poor root system .i 3d printed and invented a telescopic pot so no transplanting .like this your plants are much thicker stems lots more produce if you get chance please take a look see what you think thanks paul
Touching the leaves. This year, for the first time, I used an oscillating fan; blowing over the plants. I've noticed my stems are much stronger this year. A friend of mine gave my the suggestion and it Works Great!!

As I'm currently growing poison sumac, for a tonic I'm going to spray in my enemy's faces, I use gloves when running my hands up and down them, to strengthen them. NO!!! I will not rethink growing them! The plan is already in motion.

When I first bought an upside down planter [in a bag] I grew cherry tomatoes.
I brought two in for the winter... One of them lasted 3 summers and I had some tomatoes grow until January and then they came out in April [we usually put them out in late May, early June]...
The planter included hardware that rotated so I would turn it every day to get sun all around...
I am going to try this I am growing tomato's in a aero garden and as it grows all the branches I prune I will try to root them in a cup so by the time spring comes around I will have dozens of small tomato plants ready to plant, usually I only plant a few like 5 at the most but I see now you have to plant hundreds to get good tomatoes since so many get eaten by bugs and deer
Very informative, I am inspired to grow my own tomatoes, they are quite expensive to buy from a supermarket these days. This will be a far more greener and sustainable way to enjoy my favorite salad item. Thanx
Hey! I have some bell peppers now on my plants I started from seed in Jan. I grew them with Aquaponics. I use 10 gallon aquarium, 4 gallon plastic bin and they grow directly in aquarium gravel in the bins. They grow so well and we use a cheap 3 bulb flex lamp with led grow bulbs now we have cherry tomatoes as well on a new unit. They are so pretty in the kitchen
I did not know that it was a good idea to touch your plants and that it helps them! Watch out plants, I'm gonna get touchy!! Lol!

I would go for it , I live in an apartment and decided I wanted a garden so badly I would adapt to my circumstances. I have two determinant tomato plants both doing well on my window shelf, with rosemary and an Anaheim pepper plant. So far so good . I started them by seed under a plant light. On my kitchen counter the light is under my cabinet led growing light that doesn't get hot. I also have loose leaf lettuce growing under the light. I hope you give it a try . 🙂

Fans for stem strengthening. Blow air intermittently to force stabilizing strength (just like us with free weights).
Oh my gosh! This was so perfect! The second she started talking about it, that question actually popped into my head. I tend to blow air on plants to get dirt or bugs off so that’s amazing to know.

try using a paint brush and going from one flower to another like a bee.
I use a small fan on low speed, makes them stronger too. 🙂

Have you ever considered making a tomato bonsai by keeping one alive as long as possible and keeping it well pruned...?
TheNorthwestForager Hi Henry! Yes, I have definitely mastered (by accident) the art of stunting growth and keeping a plant alive and small for way too long. It is however very hard to get a small stunted plant to flower and produce fruit. I tend to 'forget' a few tomatoes in the growing room every year. I still feed them and water them and they happily look like seedlings but with very tough stems for a very long time. I've even planted a few of these out the following spring. :)

I make a similar concoction with old, dried, cow dung that I dilute 10:1 and give to my tomatoes and potatoes. It seems to do a good job so I'll keep doing it. I also use it on strawberries and they respond very well, especially if applied at the start and end of their season. However, I've noted that you apply your mix without dilution so I'm going to try that this year. If all my plants die I'll tell everyone you killed them.

I have tomato plants in buckets. I grew them in topsoil. I have holes drilled in the bottom so they don’t drown. I brought them inside when it got cold. There were maybe 50 tomatoes of all different sizes when I brought them in. Tomatoes are growing big and turning red, but there are no new flowers on any of the plants. Idk why? I’m adding tomato fertilizer that has me apply a tbsp. Every two weeks. I’m watering them every day. I have grow lights on a timer from 7am till 9pm. Plants look healthy but the old flowers dried off and fell off and no new flowers have appeared. What could I be doing wrong?
It sounds like your tomatoes are in shock. But don’t worry with all the care and love you are showing them I get the feeling they’ll bounce back soon. Don’t forget they need heat too. 😄

Another great video Scarlett. I am kinda interested why you wouldn't split tomatoes into different pots when they get that big. I have mine in different pots to make it easier to pot them on when they need it individually. Was it just a lack of available pots or is there a deeper purpose to your strategy? I am really interested. All the best.
Aaron's allotment Hi Aaron! Although I do have many more pots I could use tomatoes prefer to be potted up one pot size at a time. If I see the little white roots popping through the soil I'll separate them but for now this is good. Also these are dwarf tomatoes they only grow to 50cm. All that being said my main reason is a total lack of room in the house. Since most of my living room, dining room, kitchen and all of my growing room is currently being occupied by seedlings and garden plants I don't have any more space for 3 large pots until I start to move everything else out to the garden.

Have you ever used a high power led grow light? Like 200 watts or more? You'd be surprised with their growing potential.
Hi RJ Wilson, I am actually in the process of changing all the lights in my home to led lights. Yes, I am definitely going to change the growing lights too. I feel anything other than led light is simply not sustainable or environmentally friendly in my humble opinion. (we are working on eventually going full solar and living off grid so every little bit counts) Also I recently learned how toxic halogen bulbs are so no more of them.

Thanks for this video. I made the mistake of looking up "grow tents" and all I got was a bunch of pot smokers.
Just before fall you can dig up some of your tomatoes and grow them inside all winter.
How many tomato plants are in that pot? They suggest keeping only 1 in a pot.. but I'm thinking 2 in a 10 inch pot is fine? I'd put 6 seeds in a smaller pot n all have grown now about 7 inches.. I'm thinking rt now it doesn't matter but later I'll have to separate them.. wat dyu think? Thanks🙏🌸🌱

Can I grow tomatoes indoors in Maine with a temperature of 55 - 67?
You want to keep them warm and bright. If you find a spot in your home that is both of these things and it doesn’t get too cold at night you should be ok. Think of your plants as overwintering more than growing. Just don’t forget to water them and in spring plant then out in the garden and if all goes well you’ll have really early tomatoes.
I see you use rabbit droppings for tea and was thinking what about deer droppings? What say you?
Will you keep growing the 3 plants together? Do they do well together because they are determent?
+Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby, yes some times I keep up to 3 determent tomato plants in the same pot as long as it's a large one they should fill out nicely and not get too big.

+Sue Lang, which fruits /plants would you like me to feature? If you build a heated cold frame around your tomatoes or grow them in a heated greenhouse they’ll continue to ripen and bare fruit all winter.
Can you cut a stem and transplant it into a pot? Will it grow? And eventually produce?
I have a farm and have for years tried to reproduce a "real" tomato in winter. I have finally concluded that it will not happen until (1) winters are hot or (2) we invent a simulation of both the heat and infrared rays of the sun. Several restaurants offer winter tomatoes advertised as "like summer" but of course they are not - too firm, too pink, too mild. Good luck though.
Don't have any rabbits. I wonder if just putting a small scoop of Lowes cow manure in a jar of water would work?
When transplanting an avocado plant should the roots be cut that are circling on the bottom of the containter or will that stunt the growth or hurt the plant?
Did you try using HPS light indoor? you can get from 10 000 to 60 000 Lux from it. Depense how many wats sistem you have.

Hi Scarlett, love your videos! I have another question about growing tomatoes in pots: If you have limited vertical space (say, your stake is 4 foot tall) Can you just keep pruning anything that reaches this height - as well as anything that grows too wide? Or will this eventually damage it and/or stop it producing fruit? Since you'll be cutting it off before it reaches its full natural height - regardless of whether its determinate or indeterminate - is the answer different depending on which kind it is?
+EASYTIGER10, you can keep pruning your tomatoes. They’ll be ok unless you prune everything all at once. Just take a little at a time here and there. And font cut off any buds.
hey! awesome videos! I do have once question -- I started some tomatoes and peppers in my apartment ... i have 9 tomato plants and they are getting bigger - they are determinate and I would like to know what kind of container should I use for each one of them ( how deep and what diameter should it be at the top/bottom) I don t have a lot of space and I'm afraid that if i put them in containers that are too small they will not produce fruit. The container that you use seems pretty large for 1 plant and I was thinking I could use a smaller one.... Thank you!

Hi Scarlet. I'm thinking about having a cherry tomato plant in my home but I have some questions. The cherry tomatoes are tomatoes that are going to stay small no matter what I do or they're going to grow to full size tomatoes if I give them the conditions to do so? I have a tropical climate so I don't know if they're going to be too big. I don't know anything about tomato kinds so I'm lost hehe
Cherry tomatoes will stay small no matter what you feed them. You can cross pollinate a small tomato and a big tomato and get a mix of the two but you can't make a small (cherry) tomato grow any bigger than a cheery tomato. Beef tomatoes are the huge ones and in between there are hundreds or varieties than come in all colors, shapes and sizes. There are even tomatoes plants with tiny grape size tomatoes in yellow, orange and red. 🍅😊

Hi +ray bennett, Upside down gardening.... Hmmmmm we'll I have no thoughts. I haven't tried it. Maybe I should. I don't like plastic so I'd need to find an alternative to the plastic grow bag normally used to grow tomatoes. I guess if your out of space it would be a wonderful way to add tomatoes to a balcony or porch. they still need 8+ hours of sun a day and in a bag (or pot) they can dry out much faster so if you don't mind watering a lot I'd say go ahead and try it out.
I am planning on doing a mini series on balcony container gardening maybe I should try it too.

How about landscape fabric instead of plastic?
HI Scarlett just a question, how long will it take from the smallest soil container before you transfer it to the larger one, then from the a little larger one, and so on. Number of weeks would help. Thanks
It's normally takes 2 weeks for the seedling to sprout (unless they're on heat) and then another 3 to 4 weeks again depending on heat and light and the size of the seedling before I pot them up into a bigger 4" pot. After that they should stay in there until I'm able to plant them out in the garden no more than 2 weeks depending on size.

So I have read that yellow leaves could be lack of nitrogen, but you said magnesium. I usually provide them with fish fertilizer.
+Daniel Cortes, I only use fertilisers I make either from plants like nettles or clover or teas made from compost, worm poop horse manure (from my neighbour). Also well rotted kitchen scraps like eggs and bananas and of course I love to use the water from my duck pond and as well as my rabbit, duck and chicken dropping all go into the compost and eventually as top dressings or dug in the beds in the fall or as topical teas on leaves (depending on the plants). I don't use fish or bone meal ect and there for have no real experience with them.
Your right, yellow leaves could also be a lack of nitrogen a lack of sunlight or simply the onset of autumn. :)

Depending on the variety between 50 and 90 days.

Fruits For Life These are dwarf tomatoes they only grow to 50cm (half of which I've put under the soil) if I see the tiny white roots coming up I'll separate them each into their own pot but for now and at least another month this will be perfect. :)

Why the leaves are rolling downwards? The same thing happens to my potatoes growing indoors.
I have a grow light, but I was wondering if I should put my tomato plant in front of the window for a bit? The problem is, its 23 degrees outside. Even though its 68 in the house, near the window is colder. Is it not worth getting the natural sun if I have to put the plant in say a 62 degree area(near window)? Plant is 1.5 feet tall, pretty narrow stem.
I’d give it a good trim to keep it stockier (if its a indeterminate tomato plant) if it’s a really bright day try putting a large see through plastic bag over if and maybe a blanket around the bottom to keep it from getting cold and then put put it in the full sun. Tomatoes don’t like to have cold toes so keeping the pot warm will make a big difference.
When a tomato plant is tall but thin, it’s not getting enough light so it’s growing towards the light in the hopes of finding more.

The deeper you plant a tomato the more roots the plan will grow. this is why I planted it as deep as possible.

Hi Scarlett,my friend has a rabbit that uses paper pellet litter, can I use it all in my garden or do I need to pick out just the poop, I am afraid of the urine that would be in the litter ,will the urine burn my veggies...Thanks, Diane
Diane D Hi Diane, Nothing about rabbits will harm your plants except their little teeth nibbling on your veggies. :) I don't recommend using litter box wood chips (normal pine or cedar) as most take forever to breakdown. Paper or grass pellets (the ones that fall apart when wet) are perfect for the compost, strait onto the garden or into pots. I like to mix the rabbit droppings pellets and all with my potting soil when planting in pots or I work it into the soil around the veggies in the garden every few days (I normally change the litter every 3 days - Amber is a huge rabbit and drinks as much as a small dog)

How long does it take from a seed to grow actual tomatoes? Mine, are about a foot and a half tall, but it's a dry winter where I live, and I have no clue what's to come and when or if at all. :/

Excellent advice! Whenever I transfer my tomatoes to a larger pot - and bury it deeper in the soil as you did - I remove the lower leaves a few days in advance. I worry that if I bury fresh open wounds in soil they may get infected. Am I being over protective?
It's a good worry. Your way is definitely more on the safe side. I'd keep doing that. However if your forget and need to plant right away, don't worry theres little chance anything will actually go wrong.

I keep them on for 8 hours. Plants need time to rest. And they need at least 8 hours of real darkness every night.

Hi Umeir Umeir that is a very complicated question. There are many factors involved; such as the amount of sun and water the plant gets and above all the amount of food the plants get. Also different tomato plants carry different amounts of tomatoes. A cherry tomato can easily have many hundreds of tiny tomatoes. A happy healthy beef tomato many produce 10 or more large beef tomatoes. Also just like deadheading to get more flowers if you pick the tomatoes the plant will continue to produce more tomatoes if you allow the tomatoes to finish completely on the vine the plant will slow down and not worry about making more fruit (seeds). Anther factor is pruning and picking off the extra branches and leaves. Keeping the plant restricted forces it to concentrate its efforts on the fruit and not more leaves this also gives you more tomatoes.
