Torn Plantar Fascia: If I run can it heal it later

  • I had a really great question from a real patient who I did a call with.
“I have a partially torn plantar fascia. Can I keep running and let it heal later?”
He said that he had purchased The Runner's Heel Pain course and based on his self-diagnosis, he actually concluded that he definitely did not just have plantar fasciitis. It was actually more likely either plantar fasciosis, or plantar fasciosis that actually had a small tear in the plantar fascia.
Unfortunately, the treatment that I would normally do and normally recommend for somebody with a partial tear in the plantar fascia, he cannot do right now. He does not have time to actually take off of his activity and stop running completely right now.
Today on the Doc On the Run podcast, we’re talking about Torn Plantar Fascia: If I run can it heal it later?

I'd been dealing with a sore heel since August and had pretty much just gutted it out training and racing and really it'd go away once warmed up. Fast forward to January 4th. Doing 800's on the track and decided I just could'nt deal with the pain anymore. Been off running for two weeks now and doing rehab via stretching and strengthening with a great reduction in pain. I can still bike so that has been my main training since. Going to give it a full three weeks before I attempt to run again. I appreciate your podcasts, gives me hope that I'm not alone. ;)

Great video, thank you. Do you have a video explaining plantar fasciitis vs. fasciosis?

Thanks for watching. Yes, I probably do check the search. I created a course which shows not only the differences between the conditions of plantar fasciitis vs. plantar fasciosis vs. neuritis of the heel vs. bursitis of the heel, but also the differences in self-treatments for each. You can check it out here: runnersheelpain.docontherun.com/order-form

If you need help figuring it out, I can offer two great options: The Runner’s Heel Pain Course covers how runners can use the approach I would use if I were sitting in your living room, when all the is needed is to do their own self-diagnosis and self-treatment.

That may be a better option that sitting around waiting weeks or months to see another doctor, while you just lose all of your fitness waiting. If you prefer to meet and discuss with me personally, we could get on a webcam call or phone call today or tomorrow to help you figure out what you should be doing NOW to make sure you don't keep losing all of your fitness. If so, you can pick a time that works for you and block my calendar for a private call here:

How long does it take to heal? I ruptured my fascia during calf raises. I heard a pop and didn’t hurt until the next day. Now it throbs and the pain flares up at random times

So sorry to hear! How long it takes to heal all depends upon your overall health, interventions you do to accelerate healing it, and how much you avoid doing the things that could slow down healing.
